LGBF-3660-2012
Happy Monday morning friends! I hope you had a stellar weekend.  Today’s post is short and sweet –  it’s so hard to believe that we’re already to Day 20.  The card for giveaway today is from my stash and I remember making it as if it were yesterday.   Thank you so much for indulging me in this cause that I know we all share together.   I say we get as much joy at giving a card as we do when receiving because the making is such a wonderful experience.  Craft on!!

If you’re new to the blog, welcome to my 30 Days of Giving – every day during the month of July I’m giving away a handmade card – you can read all the specifics HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by searching for your name on the Giveaway Winners page.  You get there by the menu at the top of the page – put your cursor on Features then look down the list and select Giveaway Winners.

For today’s comment –  since hand made occasions can be often for people who  know many people or make many gifts and cards – how many hours a week do you spend creating?

The card that’s being given away today is shown above.  Just a note – this is a card that has been shown before and there is a possibility that some of the supplies that were used are currently discontinued, no doubt there will be something you can substitute – have a look through my galleries for alternative ideas.  Many things can still be found on the open market, just google and you’ll find that many retailers are still selling.

Hi Becca, I spend about 40 hours a week making cards or scrapping. My release!ReplyCancel

  • F BondJuly 20, 2015 - 9:21 am

Since I also sew, I would guess about 40-50 hours a week. With another 25 hours probably thinking of things I’d like to do…LOL.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, Such a beautiful card. It’s a classic and is worth repeating. I average 6 hours a week in my studio–sometimes longer when family birthdays cluster in a month or during Christmas. You save me so much time by eliminating the guess work with your designs. Very hard to do an original or first prototype. Thanks, BarbaraReplyCancel

Such a lovely card. I have to craft at least 1 hour a week but try to get in about 4.ReplyCancel

  • Cathie WearyJuly 20, 2015 - 9:24 am

Loved this card when you first had it on your website. I would love to spend every day in my craft studio but life gets in the way. It depends on the week. I am trying to get in there at least once a week for a full day and then bits and pieces on the other days. Just not enough time to do everything I want. I am a very slow crafter as I love to take my time and just get lost in what I am doing. It is a great stress reliever. Thanks for sharing this beauty again and have a wonderful day.ReplyCancel

  • Susan B.July 20, 2015 - 9:26 am

Unfortunately not as much as I would love to! I probably spend on average 10 – 12. I have to do the majority of mine on weekends when I can find and/or squeeze in some me time!

    thanks for chance to win!!ReplyCancel

  • NancyRJuly 20, 2015 - 9:29 am

Love this corner die. It is so useful. I try to spend a couple hours each day but it all depends on my pain level that day or my creativity level that day as well. I have spent as much as 8 hours when I am “in the zone”.ReplyCancel

  • SuzzieQJuly 20, 2015 - 9:30 am

I spend about six hours per week crafting, more during major holidays.ReplyCancel

  • Niki WinchellJuly 20, 2015 - 9:32 am

    Becca,
I do not spend nearly enough hours crafting in a week! Counting both knitting and paper crafts, I’m lucky if I get 5 hours or so. I do try to knit a little every day, even if just a row or two. I find it relaxing. It takes a bit more effort for me to set aside card making time. I don’t like to start unless I have at least an hour to devote to it.

This is such a beautiful card, as are all of your creations. Thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

  • Marilyn in E~TownJuly 20, 2015 - 9:33 am

Not nearly enough hours are spent creating cards! On an average week I would say I spend approximately 3-4 hrs a day working on cards in some form or another.
I love today’s card! What a great use of these corners, just love the filigree dies and how you use them and add pearls to them, so sweet!ReplyCancel

  • BenteJuly 20, 2015 - 9:35 am

Another classy card from you, Becca.
Wonderful way of using the dies!
How many hours I spend crafting a week depends of health and occasion, as an average about 5-7 hours. But I spend a lot of time thinking about new ideas for projects I want to make ;))ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. Happy Monday to you. Lovely card especially that bow and stick pin. Blue is my favourite colour. I spend on average about 12 hours a week but sometimes more and sometimes less. I don’t like days when I can’t get my crafty fix. Today isn’t one them thank goodness!ReplyCancel

  • Edna BurgessJuly 20, 2015 - 9:41 am

Such a beautiful card, as all of yours are, but I can’t find the classic square that you used. Help! Can you give me the number so that I can find it better. Thanks. EdnaReplyCancel

    • Sandi SmithJuly 20, 2015 - 8:45 pm

Hi Edna – I read your comment and saw you were having difficulty finding the die used on Becca’s beautiful card today. It’s called Filigree Corners. I don’t have the number but I found it on eBay. Initially I just did a search under “Becca Freeken dies” That led me to the dies b on eBay. I believe this die set was originally sold through JustRite Stamps so it didn’t have a typical Spellbinders number. I could be incorrect about that but if you find it from JustRie, you won’t be able to purchase it from them. They, unfortunately, recently went out of business. I hope this helps you out and you enjoy the die as much as I do mine.
      Happy Crafting!
      Blessings, Sandi SmithReplyCancel

      • Sandi SmithJuly 22, 2015 - 5:29 am

Hello – I owe you an apology, Edna, for giving the wrong name of the die used on this card. It is actually Spellbinders Gold Elements One #S5-183. What’s kind of funny is that Becca is listing the name of the dies under her posts and I forgot that. I hope you didn’t spend a lot of time trying to find it using my first die name. My only excuse for potentially sending you on a wild goose chase is that I’m trying to get off some nerve pain medication that makes me a bit loopy. My problem is that my nerve pain doesn’t want me off the medication. lol! *sigh* I really should get some sleep. That’s difficult with pain but it doesn’t help with brain fog. I truly hope you find the die. It’s on lots of websites so easy to find. Blessings, Sandi Smith

Hi Becca! It depends on the season, winter time I have more time to craft. Although special occasions in spring and summer will help in taking the time to craft. I love to scrapbook and cardmaking can’t put hours on it. Some days could be all day and other days a couple hours and yet other days no time at all.ReplyCancel

Looking back at the past twelve months, I offer my answer as a range – from 5 to 80 hours per week. The fluctuation depends on events, commitments (a group of cards to a ministry distributing cards to seniors) or an avalanche of ideas \ creativity.ReplyCancel

I am not a television person so I disappear into my craft room if John is watching something during the evening. Not all the time is spent card making (just most of it … lol!) but I like to try different techniques so I might go onto Youtube and check out some tutorials etc. But gosh! you can waste so much time online!! It is a beautiful card and sentiment. I spend at least 15 hours a week crafting. Sometimes it takes me an hour to make one card. I can sit and stare at it because something isn’t quite right. Especially since most of cards involve coloring. I’d really like to make more cards like yours. They just take your breath away.ReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 20, 2015 - 10:47 am

How any hours per week do I craft? Well, that depends on the week.
First of all, I am retired, so an outside job no longer interferes. I have an ill hubby at home, so that does interfere. He is getting better, so that is good. I like to exercise so I don’t turn into a puddle. {smile} That takes time. Some weeks I go places with my friends. On average, I probably spend 30-35 hours in my craft room. That includes the time I spend staring at my project, trying to figure out if it is salvageable or not! LolReplyCancel

Another beautiful card with more wonderful dies. I probably spend 3-4 hours a week crafting – more closer to Thanksgiving and Christmas since I send a lot of cards at that time of year. I like to stamp up a bunch of images – like flowers, then color them while I’m watching TV in the evening. This way I can spend time with DH and get some crafting done.ReplyCancel

  • Anne (UK)July 20, 2015 - 11:15 am

    Wow – another stunner!
I’m not sure how many hours I spend crafting….. My dear husband would answer ‘lots!’
It varies from day to day and week to week, depending on other calls on my time. I have to come up with a project each week for the craft group and that can take many hours in the planning and execution as I need to cater for all levels of ability. It can be rather challenging at times and often I need to prepare packs with die cuts ready for assembly. Die-cutting in advance for them can take a fair amount of time – or rather the removal of all the tiny pieces from intricate dies ready for the next cut! It’s a labour of love :o)

Another stunning card today. I tend to craft in sessions so some weeks I spend no time at all while I can spend two weeks or more at a time while I have everything out! As an example, I am making a Birthday book at the moment for a 50 year old man (always more difficult than women!!) and I’ve already been at it for over a week and only just over half way through! The most difficult part is now behind me, having chosen all the photographs so I keep plodding on in between other things that need to be done – cooking, cleaning, ironing, shopping……..!!

How many hours do I spend ?? It´s really hard to say, but I can say, that I have never enough time to all I want to try out, and always have a long list of things and ideas, I want to try. But I do at least spend 10 hours every week and often more on cardmaking and crafting, that´s for sure, but I could use that many times that, if I just didn´t have to do all the boring housework, that unfortunately needs to get done some times too he he.ReplyCancel

Oh Becca, today’s is another card to be treasured.
I spend tons more time on the computer simply admiring and commenting on other people’s creations. As I don’t sell my cards they are only made as required for family and friend’s birthdays, anniversaries and new babies etc. Also I don’t have a dedicated ‘crafting space’ so I need to ‘set up’ for each occasion. It would be such a dream to be able to sail into my craft room and play!!!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I always spend at least 3 hours a week and sometimes more; that is because we have a 3 hr. get together on Tuesday night from 6:30 to 9:30, then if I don’t finish whatever I am working on and it might need to go in the mail, I spend whatever time I need to get it ready. Wish it could be 3 hours a day, maybe someday.
I remember this card so well as I copied this one for my baby girl’s birthday this past year. Love it so feminine; I did it in pink.

  • JessicaJuly 20, 2015 - 12:34 pm

Here again, this varies. Since most of what do depends on others birthdays etc. Sometimes I’m up to my neck in paper, glue and ink, several hours a day… several times a week. Sometimes it’s only a couple of times a week. And sometimes I am late getting my cards out because I just can’t seem to make myself go into my room. It’s the chair. I need a better chair. Oh no! Something else I need to buy!ReplyCancel

Lovely card, I remember using this die to make my eldest daughter a wedding anniversary card. Some weeks I craft most days and others not much, I try and average at least five hours a week.

    Hugs and love.

  • Joni DtonekingJuly 20, 2015 - 1:00 pm

    Good Monday, Becca!
When I am in my busy times, I hope I am spending a ration of 1:1creating to drafting…if I spend 8 hours creating a card concept, then I hope I have 8 hours to craft cards, more or less. Usually it is more like 1:2 create to craft depending on the project.

If I am doing a one of a kind, of a special order, those ratios go out the window. And some of that depends on my inspiration time…if I am rushed, I may well have more “dogs” than wins in the process, which increases my recycle and up cycle baskets, and decreases by finished product.!

Love this color combo today..reminds me of wedgewood, which reminds me of my maternal grandmother.

Oh my goodness! What a pretty card. Thank goodness I have some of these dies. I am going to look into buying stick pins or jewelry making supplies to make some. I spend about 20 + hrs a week card-making. Right now I am really busier than normal as I am starting my Christmas cards. Becca I bought one your dies shown on e-bay as it was retired. I am going to make some Christmas cards with it.ReplyCancel

while working I would spend 4-6 hours a week making things. Now that I am retired I am hoping to spend at least 2-4 hours a day in my craft room once it is done. It also depends on the time of year, of course Christmas I am making things every available minute from October on.ReplyCancel

Time is of the essence! Life is racing, and there is never enough time in the day to “create” as much as I would like! Some weeks fly by and “0” is done in my arts. But then I can take two to three days out of another given week, and knock out a goodly supply. Just depends on what God has in store for me… How many hours do you set aside? This is a very “telling” question, actually. Do you have a schedule or pattern with which you are able to master you time table? I’ve purposed in my heart to make time to master your bows. I typically spend every waking hour creating one gift or another even though I do not know many people. I give my gifts to anyone I see who can use a pick me up and often times have been neighbors, strangers I do not even know just because I love to put a smile on someone face like I pray often times someone would do for me but rarely even happens. There is often more joy in the giving than the receiving :o). Giving is a two-fold Blessing!ReplyCancel

How many hours do I spend crafting.
Way to much time. I am my husbands carer he is blind. So I don’t work. So I am lucky enough to have all the hours in the day to fill. So I sew, needlework or make things from paper. I consider myself a fabric and paper artist. Or as my 93 yr old mom would say a fiddle faddler. Always doing something with my hands.

Beautiful card. I have made cards similar to this one for birthdays, anniversary, and changed the sentiment for sympathy. I always get compliments with this card.

It depends on the number of birthdays, anniversaries, sympathy cards needed for any given week. The month of August, I will get to spend a lot of time in my craft room. I recently attend the Great Rubber Stamp Event in Collinsville, IL (St. Louis area) and purchased a lot of goodies that I haven’t had a chance to play with. The new dies and stamps will be “played with” during the next two weeks. Purchased my Christmas stamp and dies and will get started on them right away. I am so in awe of your ability to create so many different designs from your Spellbinders dies. I have this die, which I know is one you created. The cool crisp blue and white colors give the card an elegant summer feel. I just love it!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m unable to craft due to complications of injuries from a bad fall. So, I’m going back to the time when I was last able to craft. I am retired so I am able to spend a lot of time crating. I’m the type of crafter who will stay up all night to finish a layout or project. I think my time crafting would vary depending on time spent with my husband or grandchildren. I also have other health issues which interfere with my creative time but I would average between 20–40 hours a week.
I’m really enjoying this month Becca. You are so generous in sharing your cards and I love the conversation that is going on with the various questions you’ve raised. I’m really enjoying reading everyone’s responses. Thank you!ReplyCancel

I have a girlfriend that comes over most every Tuesday from 9-3 and we make cards together, and then depending on my upcoming birthday/anniversary, etc. list and may spend another day or two in my woman cave stamping. No week is the same. If I see a card on-line that really inspires me, off the computer I go and back to creating.ReplyCancel

Morning Becca, I remember this fabulous card, truly beautiful.
I spend more time creating in the Winter months, during the Summer months I have lots of gardening to do, so the cardmaking is relegated to family Birthdays in the summer. I’ve just given my eldest Granddaughter her 30th birthday card (yesterday, 20th), it took me 3 days on and off to make it. On the 30th is my youngest Granddaughter’s 18th, so I’m now on with that on and off.
    Enjoy your day.
Lots of love from Patricia xxReplyCancel

Another beautiful card. I like how you take something normally a corner decoration and use it a little differently with the overlap. I try to spend a couple hours per week crafting but sometimes it is none and sometimes when really lucky it is the whole day. take care and hope you have a wonderful crafty day.ReplyCancel

Great card, Becca! I have this die and, after so many years of following you, I have just become convinced that I need a whole lot more sentiment stamps. Sometimes it takes me awhile to catch on… To your question: I spend at least 8 hours (4 one day and 4 the next) creating and making kits for my class. Between that and actually teaching the class, as well as participating and creating for my miniatures crafting (Oh, and reviewing my email subscriptions for new ideas and new products along with the accompanying tutorials), I don’t get near enough time for my personal crafting. I keep trying to let go of less important things… housework, cooking, laundry, etc. but old habits die hard. The frustration is getting to me because the craft room calls so insistently and loudly!!ReplyCancel

Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Quietfire Design - Friendship Isn
Good Sunday Morning to you!   Today’s card for 30 Days of Giving is my favorite cream and gold.   Another new card and I must say it’s not often that what I think of in a card is what I end up with.  I’m one of those who has an idea to get started but actually create as I go along.  (I’m embarrassed to say how long it takes me sometimes.)  Today I envisioned the layers, put it together quickly and was done.  Here’s how it goes – card base, layer of gold, my favorite embossing folder – Spellbinders Shady Allure wrapped with lace and ribbon followed by Spellbinders Fleur de Elegance which I have stamped with a new sweet and pretty sentiment from Quietfire Design called Friendship Isn’t a Big Thing – and topped off with Spellbinders Majestic Oval.   These elements are literally stacked upon each other to make a card.  Of course as always I add a bow and pearls when I’m finished.   So many times I see a comment saying, I wish I could do that.  Well, you know what, you can!

My inspiration when creating may be a poem, a set of colors, an item such as a very special paper or trinket, a person, a memory with a person, or an occasion. Many times when creating a card it reminds me of someone, so I name the card in honor of that person. When I tell them that, they are so pleased.ReplyCancel

  • NancyJBJuly 19, 2015 - 11:04 am

Most of the time that I make a card it is for a particular person so I have them in mind as to what they like. That said, I create as I go and often change direction in mid stream. Love your card and the sentiment. That is one of my favorite sayings.ReplyCancel

Usually I start with an inspiration. Maybe a die I want to use or an embossing folder or something I saw on the net. Then, I just create as I go. Often I’ll make a second card after studying the first thinking what if I did…. Or I should have done…..ReplyCancel

Hello and happy Sunday, Becca. I mostly get my inspiration or theme from Challenges, which I love to participate in. Or I get a request to make a specific card for a specific occasion so, the first thing I do is go look for the stamps that would be suitable and then, go from there.

  • Joni StonekingJuly 19, 2015 - 11:21 am

Becca, you have done it again! And no, I am not surprised!

I usually have an inspiration and make a “sloppy copy” to sit on my desk while I do something else for a bit, then come back to, to refine and add finishing touches, or re–do and notice where the gaps are and add another layer, or another texture, or another color. Usually I end up with a finished design and go…that’s it, that is the one! On those rare and really sweet occasions I really do have a vision for what I want the card to look like finished, and when I hold my mouth just right, and my hands are steady, and stars align…when I am finished..voila! It has worked! That is the sweet spot! I love it when that happens!

Thank you again, this really has become my gratitude practice for the month..and today I am most grateful for the community of artists I belong to. They may not know me, but I surely know you by your work. Thank you for sharing yourself this way!ReplyCancel

I usually have an inspiration for the basis of the design then it evolves as I try various thoughts. The closest I’ve come to idea directly to paper was inspired by some papers I found while working on another card. I’d been wanting to create a card with some leftover Polaroid frames I’d made & a panel with decorative scoring & grphic b&w Washi tape.. Then I spotted the biplane image on a 12 x 12 Authentique paper & a more muted overall biplane print. Focal image for the Polaroid & background paper found. Just needed to mat them on black to ground them. Voila!ReplyCancel

Lovely card. I am quite partial to ovals currently for some reason! Most times I work with a vision and it comes out more or less as planned. But sometimes its more of an organic process and its made up as I go along with varying degrees of success. Bit like cooking with and without a recipe I suppose. My creativity is never the same twice. Sometimes I see a beautiful card someone else made and am inspired by it, then set out to create a similar one with the supplies I have on hand. Pinterest is a great source of inspiration for me. I just need to see an idea, then I can take off and modify it to make it my own with the supplies I have. I also have a group of GFs who are paper crafters and we call ourselves The Card Divas. When we meet, we bring a kit ready to assemble for each member. After a how-to demo for each paper craft project, we then assemble them and get to take home 5 new terrific paper craft ideas!ReplyCancel

I usually create as I go along, however sometimes I see a card or picture and immediately a card layout pops into my mind. I still fuss and cut out different colors, textures, and shapes, as well as play with the placement of things on the card. I have a whole box of die cuts in all colors that were rejected from projects or cards. When the box gets pretty full, I take them to my Amish friends and give it to them. They make cards to sell in their local Amish store, so they’re thrilled to get my rejects. The funds are used to pay for school supplies in the Amish school.

Oh my, another stunning card with a beautiful big bow Becca! The gold mirror cardstock makes it.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, your card is beautiful as always. It would be an honour to own one of your cards!
Sometimes I have a vision of what my card will look like and other times I like to just play with certain products and see what happens. For me it depends on what I am making it for. If its a wedding/Ann. or a sympathy card I like to plan it thoughtfully. Otherwise its fun to make something more whimsical and spontaneous.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

What a beautiful card and spot on sentiment. How I create is an evolving process. From the beginning, I would think of the individual that I was creating for and create something deeply personal as I went along, this was before my YouTube days. Now after having watched all of these videos, and read tutorials and witnessed examples of other people creative and beautiful work, my creative juices and no longer flowing as freely as they once did. I am current finding my style once again as I develop more skills.

I love it! There is an elegance to this style of card that I find irresistible… Thank you for the continuing inspiration. As to my creativity… I’d have to say “all of the above” Sometimes it is a die that inspires me or a sentiment;sometimes it is someone else’s creation or an image that pops into my head (usually just before I wake up in the morning). As to taking a long time to really get it together; that would be me, as well. I teach a class and people don’t understand that I need at least 3 days of thinking, attempting, reconsidering, and starting all over at the beginning, thinking. I can also be spontaneous (read: not following a pre-set plan) when provided with materials as I am when I take a class at a scrapbooking event. I just spent this past Friday and Saturday at a big event (hence my silence the last few days) where I attended classes and went off the chart with the materials provided and was very happy with the result. As one who teaches this craft, I know how great it is to see people take off in their own direction; that spark of individuality is exciting to see.ReplyCancel

That embossing folder has a great base. I never think to add another plain die on top of an intricate die. Great verse from quietfire. I never really have a full plan when I start. Usually I have one thing that reminds me of the person I am giving the card. I search thru the boxes looking for other pieces of ribbon, papers, stamps, beads, dies that I think will fit. Often times I can’t use the piece that orginally inspired me to start.ReplyCancel

Sometimes I just sit and put things together. It might take me a few days, but I finally come up with a design that I like. I generally have a person in mind… from there, I look at my stash of materials, and try to let the memories of that individual – even if they are small ones – influence my direction. Some people enjoy embellishments, some are minimalists, some enjoy whimsy, some are more classically drawn. You can usually tell by the way a person dresses, or decorate their home or office, cubical etc… The generic cards for spontaneous gifting usually follow the minimalist bend. As I mentioned before, it’s all about the person for me. Ok, confession, IF the card was for a person like my self, it would definitely be similar to your bend. I dearly love lace, and ribbon… I enjoy being me!!! I like being a girl!!!ReplyCancel

Beautiful card! The embossing folder is perfect for this creation. Each card I make starts with the person to whom the card is created for. Hi Becca
Lovely card!! I usually create for a specific person, so I usually put something on the card the person would really like or expresses them! The idea for these cards might come from other cards I see or trying different dies. Sometimes it seems to take for ever and other times it goes together real easy.ReplyCancel

Love the cream and gold combo! I always have a pretty good idea of what I plan to do but it doesn’t always end up like the original vision. Something may not work out as I had planned, or my eyes fall on another die cut or ribbon or other leftover on my table and it inspires me to take the project in a different direction. Whichever way it goes, I’m usually satisfied with the results.ReplyCancel

What a BEAUTIFUL card for a friend! I love it, especially the elegance of this card. You introduced me to the Canadian company Quietfire, I’m a Canadian… LOVE their elegant stamps!

I tend to start with a basic idea, that’s when I do the best. But whether I just start and play and find my way, or I start with a basic idea, I tend to change it as I go. Perhaps that’s why it takes me so long to make a card, when others seem to make them so much faster, I don’t know. But I do enjoy the process…

Today I really need to start making a card for a friend I worked with before I was disabled, I found out that she is dying–the idea of making this card is very intimidating, but I need to just make the best card that I can and send it.

Thanks for always creating cards that bring joy into people’s lives.

    Bless you!

I kind of do all of them. Depends on the card I need to make. There are times I don’t know what I’m going to make until I look at the stamps I have and then start from there. Sometimes I see a card I like and steal the idea and make my own.ReplyCancel

  • Jeannine S.July 20, 2015 - 8:44 am

I usually look for a card that inspires me as a kicking off point. Then I let my creative spirit take charge. Sometimes it goes really well and others take me forever to complete, I’ve had instances where I have to drop it altogether and come back the next morning to complete it. I find I don’t do well when it’s a card that I need right away so I try to have a stash done without the wording so I can quickly adapt it when needed.ReplyCancel

Another gorgeous card! I will have an occasion in mind & go look for inspiration as I don’t create from scratch. If they warrant a “Becca” card then I go to APG first, otherwise I go to Pinterest. If I’m going to re-create a “Becca” card I start with my sentiment & look for card that has the same sentiment “shape”. My colors aren’t always the same & dies may not be the same but it’s the same feel. If I go to Pinterest, I look at my many pins & go from there…
Thank you for your continued inspiration & the chance to win one of your breathtaking cards!ReplyCancel

  • Niki WinchellJuly 20, 2015 - 9:36 am

Yet another beautiful card. I love this sentiment.

I usually start with some kind of idea of what I want to make, often something I’ve seen on line. Sometimes it’s the colors or layout that I’m using, other times I’m shamelessly copying! Occasionally, I’ll look at something I’ve had in my “stash” for too long and say “I have to use this today!”ReplyCancel

Love your beautiful card. Actually, all these apply when I create. It depends on what theme and for whom I am making the card. Sometimes it is from a sketch or just for a friend or family member.ReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 20, 2015 - 11:09 am

Oh my gosh, Becca, this card – is – stunningly – gorgeous!!!!!! I think it is a little more on the simple end, but so very elegant! SWOON!
( I am a day late but still wanted to get my 2 cents in!)
How do I create? Hmmmmmm, pausing to think. Sometimes I am inspired from seeing a project I love. Sometimes I see a color combo & think, Wow, I can do_?______ with this. Sometimes I purchase a new die or product specifically because I was inspired by the product. Sometimes I need a certain type of card or gift & I search on Pinterest for ideas. But mostly, I am inspired by the creations I see on the blogs I follow. I save & bookmark the project or site & refer back to it later on.
Lately, I am struggling with trying to recreate a project I love using only what I already have in my stash. That is very difficult for me. I never recreate the inspiration idea exactly. I always change the color, the texture, the embellishments, the sentiments. But changing a die grouping, or using different patterned paper than what I already have is very difficult for me.
Also, creating from a sketch is very hard for me. That Should be really easy, right? Nope, it’s not! It leaves the field w-I-d-e open with choosing colors, sentiments, texture, patterns, metals, ribbons, buttons, etc! Whew! It’s a wonder I ever complete a project at all! Lol
I love looking for ideas on your site, Becca. I am always inspired to look thru my dies to recreate something you have shared. And it never looks exactly like a Becca design. But I am pleased with my design!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Sorry a bit delayed again lol! Beautiful card. I craft by all three lol! Sometimes I know exactly how I want a card to turn out, other times I get inspiration from designers like yourself and at other times I just put it together as I go along, it really depends on the day.

    Love & hugs

Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Victorian Bow - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Hiya sweeties!  What a week of blessings, it’s just the little things.  Another new card for you – remember I mentioned that I got into my zen earlier this week by cutting up a whole bunch of new dies and laying out the possibilities.   I love that kind of focus, when I have a lot on my mind it totally makes me relax.  At any rate this is one of ‘those’ cards and it’s the giveaway today :-)  I created a card base for this odd sized card (4-1/4″ x 6-3/4″) by using the Hinge method I’ve described before using Spellbinders Arched Elegance – the inlay piece at the top and the bottom of the piece cut for the front and the piece cut for the back of the card.  On top of that I layered Spellbinders Victorian Bow and I finished off with Spellbinders Baby Buntings and a stamped sentiment from a Quietfire Design set called Always Be My Friend.

My friends/ family are, to quote many of them, not creative. The rest don’t have the patience, or aren’t that talented. I try to explain how easy it is. However, not too strenuously, so as not to take away their awe. ;-)
My niece is creative, but her talent lies in cooking. She did try cross stitch, but “it took too long”. She asked me to make a birthday card for her mom. When mom received it she wanted to know all about it. We had a convert. That was the only time my creations inspired anyone. Thanks JessicaReplyCancel

A truly stunning card once again Becca. My three great nieces have followed in my footsteps and I have encouraged them further by giving them lots of card, paper, various materials and tools to help them along. I have also “been responsible” for getting friends involved in card making, as I am occasionally reminded!

Lovely card Becca, and not too complicated. Since I have your arched elegance, I plan to make it–good all purpose card. Love the idea of using the strip from the arched elegance as the top and bottom. Thanks. I culled my huge supply of wood stamps, ink pads, patterned and bulk paper and gave it to the church–children’s ministry, ladies groups, and individuals. They so appreciated receiving the items, it was a joy to give them away and allowed me room to work in my studio. Should have done it years ago and plan to repeat every year. New converts were made to the handmade card world.ReplyCancel

My sis who likes crafts just dabbles in it. I try to encourage her, but she is single & rather afraid she won’t make something “good” enough to give away. If I lived near enough to her,I could teach her some techniques to give her confidence.

Oh what a great questions today. . . it’s easy for me to bring family and friends into my stress free craft environment!!! As for family, my husband knows how much I love to craft and has supported me throughout our 34 yrs+ of marriage, he even was the one who suggested that we go to IKEA and buy all these book cases to store my supplies!!! I guess he recognizes how my level of stress is reduced when I’m crafting. As for my sons, well they’ve always been supportive and now they contact me and say “mom I need a card for this or that, can I get one” what a huge pat on the back for me! As for my friends, I shower them with cards, nothing better than putting your heart into a “Mother’s Day” card, tho my mom is no longer with me, I make my friends a card for “Mother’s Day”, now they come to me for cards instead of the stores, I love that they love to have homemade cards instead of store bought!!!!
What a gorgeous card, and such a warm, heart felt sentiment, I love it!!!ReplyCancel

  • Christine MillerJuly 18, 2015 - 10:23 am

I have a dear friend who will “join me” for a Saturday afternoon of card making. She is very creative and loves to learn about using the tools and supplies, but she hasn’t “bought in” to card making as far as amassing her own collection of supplies. That is okay, because I really enjoy her company.

My son has a very artistic eye though he will soon leave for college with dreams of becoming a chemical engineer. His school projects (posters, dioramas, and even digital creations) have always been amazing. I like to attribute that to the time he spent playing with decorative-edged scissors, paper, and stickers while I scrapbooked.

It was fun trying to engage my mom-in-law in scrapbooking. We are both teachers and I tried to convince her that a page is just a tiny bulletin board. She finished one book and gave up scrapbooking….she said there were too many decisions to make and that she is not creative. We tried!ReplyCancel

I’ve hosted several get togethers for friends. Each participant designs a card and puts together kits to make it. Then it’s an all day workshop as we make our cards! In the last couple of years, I helped my daughter-in-law design and create baby shower invitations, thank you notes & baby announcements… all for my first grandchild!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! Love your card today. Very elegant! Love your hinge technique, too……looks especially nice on this card. I’ve attracted friends and family into hand making cards by sending them handmade cards. Oftentimes they ask me how I made it……..and then, the FUN begins!

Someday I hope to be able to list my own blog, it’s one of my dreams. :) I live far from most of my family, but I’ve been asked to make sets of cards for my sister and I have done that, and hope to make another set for her when I can–she is a school principal, and I tend to make cards she uses for colleagues and she loves Classic Pooh, so I’ve collected a bunch of those stamps and hope to create this time something more grown up and sophisticated. Last time I was visiting them and bought a wedding invitation box and used those card fronts, panels, ribbon, and envelopes. This time I hope to make them quite different… I’ve also been collecting a few supplies to make cards for my mother to give to her cross-stitching friends, as that is my mother’s passion, and I don’t think she’s been all that excited about my cards–at least she doesn’t see paper crafting as as much an art form as what she does, although I have worked on cards and bookmarks especially around her (I once spent about 10 weeks there to help her after she had a major surgery and made about 500 bookmarks that I gave away–about 100 for my sister’s staff at school at Christmas and the rest were mainly bible verse or faith-based sentiments, although a few had reading comments like “this is where I fell asleep” which works for me!), and she has been astonished at the amount of time and various steps involved in making a card. Hoping to combine some actual stitching on some of her cards along with some dies that go along with the cross-stitch look. I’ve worked on it in the past and didn’t like the results–used elements from different manufacturers that didn’t match up in scale and had to let the project go. Hoping this time it will work. Would love to incorporate the look of old quilts too in some, and purchased a couple of JustRite stamps with quilt patterns lately…

Sorry, Becca this is so long! I have a question for you, and you can feel free to send me an e-mail or answer it here… I’m a little confused about the status of JustRite. I know their store closed and I am still looking for a few of your stamps and a couple of other JustRite stamps (like the Lilac 2-step stamp set), and bought that Lilac set from a store, then I was contacted that they were out of stock on that set, but that it would be back in stock in August. I was puzzled and asked how that was possible when JustRite has gone out of business (I’ve seen that posted on other store sites). They said they’d do some research, and sent me a note saying that JustRite hasn’t gone out of business, but one can only purchase their stamps through distributors or in stores. Yet I know your Amazing Paper Graces and other JustRite designer stamps were retired. So I am confused–can you please clarify this?

What a gorgeous card for this day, Becca! I have recently purchased 4 of your die sets, the Arched sets and the Curved ones (not sure if I have the names right…) and cannot wait to use them. Your cards always take my breath away, and I love the fantastic ribbon you use, what amazing quality! You introduced me to Quietfire stamps, I LOVE them, and didn’t know about this Canadian company and I live in Canada… So grateful to now have a few of these unbelievably beautiful sentiment stamps.

Blessings, and again sorry this is SO long!

Hey Joanne, no comment is ever too long – speak your heart!

So to answer your question, to the best of my knowledge JustRite is closed, I imagine there are still some left over products to sell but I’m not really in the loop on that.

So glad that you’ve found a use for some of the things I love :-)ReplyCancel

Another beautiful card. Your such a blessing to all of us to share your talents with us. Many times after seeing your card I go on line and find the dies or stamps you use so I can add to my collection. No one in my family is interested in card making so I surround myself in this small town with friends who enjoy the same interest as myself. Once a month several ladies come over to my room and we just work on whatever inspires us. Another group meets 3 times a month and it is strictly card making.ReplyCancel

Well, from all of my family, here and abroad, only my 17 year old granddaughter is into crafts, although not handmade cards, she paints with water colors and acrylics and she is looking into going to an art school when she graduates High School next year. I have many friends who are into card making and we swap cards once or twice a month, which is awesome.
My in laws only love receiving my cards but, when I’ve approached the subject of maybe coming to my house so they can get an idea of how fun this is, they have never accepted so, I just let it go.
Thank you for sharing your lovely card Becca, I love the sentiment and the beautiful lay out and details. I hope I’ll be the lucky one this time.

I take them to my craft room, pull out my supplies and away we go. I love the look on their face when they have created their own card.ReplyCancel

Receiving handmade cards almost always brings the question…how did you do that? The first thing I like to show them is heat embossing….a fascinating technique which always brings a – WOW!- then I let them do it…soooo much FUN to see their pleasure. Then on to other techniques they want to see…and TRY! Personally I was hooked the moment I saw heat embossing and then walked into a local stamp store – a passion was born!!!

Before I moved I use to get together with friends that I made in a little store that sold stamps etc. But when I moved I really have not found anybody that enjoys crafting/card making. I like to go into my craft little area and create. The new friends that I have made do not because they work 8 to 10 hours a week have families and try to catch up with work at home. Hi Becca!

I sadly do not have any friends who are crafters. Most I think believe that it is a waste of time and money. “I should be out exercising and having fun!”

After receiving several handmade creations from me, my mother is starting to dabble at trying to start on her own but she is OVERWHELMED with the amount of products and the cost.

I have three daughters, who I hope and pray will follow in my footsteps. My oldest is 17 and she appreciate what I do but does not care to try for herself. My middle is 13 and she tries to stamp and color after watching me but she gets frustrated b/c hers is not “like mine” and quits. My youngest is 8 and she is the most promising. She loves to stamp and watercolor and does a pretty good job.

    Blessings,

Good Morning Becca! I just got some of the quiet fire stamps in yesterday and love them! Thanks for the lead in that and she’s Canadian which makes it way easier for me. Shipping costs and exchange rates are huge. Especially with Spellbinders which is my Favourite place for dies. Anyway. Way of subject now back to your question; my family loves my cards and says I should sell them. As far as the interest in making them no one feels they are talented enough or just get intimidated with all my the things to make a card. They just say no I can’t do that. I wish sometimes I had a card making buddy. Maybe when my grand daughter gets a little bigger she will show interest. My grand niece who lives with me says no that’s not my thing! Actually, my family and friends prior to my entry to the crafting world (about 2 years ago) still are not “interested” in crafting with me or those who might live across the country. What crafting has done for me is to qualitatively expand my circle of friends to those who are crafters. I have met individuals in Hobby Lobby and Michaels where crafting has been the initial bond that has cemented our adventures and friendships.ReplyCancel

It is easy with the card making. Usually starts when they receive a card and they say “I wish I could do that”. I then get them to tag a long to one of my clubs. Sometimes they get hooked. Crocheting or sewing are different, though. I did have a male friend who wanted to learn how I crocheted the edging on an afgan! He already had a basic knowledge of crocheting, really just had to show him a few new stitches.ReplyCancel

One of my greatest joys is sharing a day with friends and making cards. Over the years I’ve invited every one of my gfs to join me for a day of cardmaking and like any adventure there are many reasons for some to drop out. But my door is always open for whoever is interested. These include friends from church, hs and college friends, Tai Chi, exercise, dance, singing, art and cooking classes, work associates and neighbors. I’m thrilled that my friends from different walks of life all get to know each other too.ReplyCancel

Like to exchange information and cards with a friend who is into stamping. I don’t do too much stamping as I generate all my sentiments on the computer and die cut them. I would term my work papercrafting more so than stamping. Will be moving shortly closer to my family so am hoping to get a sister-in-law and nieces possibly interested. They love receiving my cards and see how nice it is to be able to personalize them when they’re handmade. Today’s new card is very lovely! Another source of inspiration for my dabblings!ReplyCancel

This is so lovely! But for me i do not have any friends even though I go out of my way to be nice to people. So the quote for today is so true. A true friend is definitely a treasure!

As for the answer for today, I have not been able to get my family into making cards except for my niece and she was taught while she was a nurse in a hospital.

One family decided to recycle all the cards they get by cutting the fronts off store bought cards they receive and attaching them to the gifts they give at Christmas and the other family is getting cranky as she gets older and just does not have the patience anymore so she buys store bought cards..ReplyCancel

I have taken my daughter and daughter-in-law with me to crops and scrapbooked and crafted with them in our home. I’ve done the same with friends and even had “online” crafty sessions with friends that live away via online chats while we’re both working on projects.ReplyCancel

Such a true sentiment! My daughter is also a card maker, but inactive at this point in life. She uses all her creative talent in working with birth to three year old children thru Early Head Start. But I am sure down the road she will get back to it. I have several sets of stamps (purchased twice by mistake :) set aside for her when she is ready to dive back in. I do have family ask me to make cards for them to give so I know they appreciate those they receive.ReplyCancel

We do this just for fun and to be together. 98% of the time i make cards from scratch, but it is a joy to share these times with my cherish sisters.ReplyCancel

Getting ready to make a convert! Going to start making Christmas cards soon. My daughters best friend said something the other day about how she was ready for Christmas to get here. I asked if she wanted to come over and start cards. She jumped at the chance. Soon she will be reeled in with the rest of us! Oh well, it’s good clean fun (unless you look at my craft room). Love the card! Blessings, LisaReplyCancel

I love it when you play with new dies, Becca! The results are always spectacular.
I run a craft group and hopefully have helped to show people how to make a card that they are pleased to send to someone. We had a new lady yesterday who struggles with mobility. She has always said that she couldn’t make things, but was so delighted with her creation that she is taking it to Church in the morning. It’s such a blessing to see how much enjoyment people get out of creating something, especially when they initially think they can’t!

What a beautiful card you made today! I love the little pink roses! Your question today is one that I don’t think I have an answer to. The closest I think I can get to bringing friends or family into crafting is that because of my scrap booking my sister has started scrapbooking too. I feel very lucky to have the GASC in my neighborhood every June and my sister was awed the first time she joined me there. She makes beautiful pages of her daughter’s dance career.ReplyCancel

I have been responsible for at least one friend taking up cardmaking and have also encouraged friends’ children to do cardmaking and spent time and donated/gifted supplies to them to get them inspired. It reminds me of hours spent learning knitting and sewing from mym mum and grandma. I have done a little with my own kids but they are very artistic and mainly teach themselves (and from the internet) drawing, sewing etc.ReplyCancel

This card is another stunning card Becca. I love the sentiment and the layers add so much texture.

I have made some cards for friends, but not nearly as many as I have the “intention” to make. I started out as a scrapbooker, not a card-maker, but I’ve switched these two activities around, and am turning into a card-maker.

Since you started this 30 day thought-provoking activity, I have been thinking about a friend of mine who had joined a group that made daily cards for people who are terminally ill, and I’m thinking of finding out more about this group, and I may join them – thanks to you for putting this idea back into my head.

I LOVE your cards and feel so inspired by them.

    Hi, Becca,
I love this card using the dies you designed – exquisite!

Interesting question…I think my younger sister was on a quest to find her craft because of my cardmaking and my twin sister’s scrapbooking and jewelry-making. She discovered knitting and she now understands my outrageous inventory of paper and supplies!

I think I have inspired some who are already paper crafters more than motivated someone to start. I think the creative spirit is alive and well but people express it in so many ways – gardening, cooking, writing, building, teaching… I have particularly enjoyed reading comments to your blog because I so resonate to the voice that expresses a desire to share something of love and beauty with other people. That kind of generosity I recognize and appreciate.

    Love & blessings,
    SandyReplyCancel

A number of years ago I had a very good friend who also loved to make cards and do other paper-crafting. Together we would get ideas off each other and share each others strengths. So 13years after I shifted away, we are still in contact via Skype every Thursday during her lunch hour, where we catch up and still share our passion for card making. The ideas still flow!ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,

Stunning card, love the design and sentiment, so beautiful.

I am afraid I have not bought anyone into card making or design, I have friends who are into music and arts but not card making, family love my creations but they are not ‘into’ it so to speak so apart from my blog and Design Team friends that is it.

If I know the person’s favorite color, then I first start with creating the card using this color, unless the event dictates the color. Then, if I am lucky, I will have been inspired by someone else’s beautiful card. Most of the time while designing and producting the cards, I design as I go along. Sometimes I will think about the design, sleep on the idea, then when I wake-up the design composition will be finished in my head. Oh, how I love this technique! Wishing all a wonderful weekend.ReplyCancel
