Card Making Idea by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Victorian Bow Corner - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning sweet friends. I have another new card to share today, I hope you don’t mind – it’s the card being given away for the 30 Days of Giving.  I have plenty of cards in my stash but I simply can’t resist playing with new toys that come in.  I don’t know about you, but creativity doesn’t strike me one card at a time :-)  When it strikes I have to rearrange and go with it.  The other day I spread out on my counter and shuffled things around.  My card today uses an interesting piece from Spellbinders Victorian Bow Corner, except, I’m using it upside down – it’s so pretty both ways.  I mounted in on a panel that I detailed with a line of piercing using my Tool N’ One (see below).  My focal panel is layered on top of Spellbinders Adorning Labels Twenty Five..  It is all finally mounted onto Spellbinders Grate Effect that gives wonderful detail to my background.

If you’re new to the blog, welcome to my 30 Days of Giving – every day during the month of July I’m giving away a handmade card – you can read all the specifics HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by searching for your name on the Giveaway Winners page.  You get there by the menu at the top of the page – put your cursor on Features then look down the list and select Giveaway Winners.

For today’s comment –  How do you craft when creativity strikes, a big session or a little at a time?

While I would love to craft all day when inspiration strikes, I seldom can fit in more than an hour or so. Still, it’s fun to get something done when that flash of inspiration hits.

Another beautiful card, thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

On most occasions, I craft until I run out of steam and for the rest, until the object is complete.

I usually do a pretty big session of crafting when the urge strikes! Love the way you used the dies on this card – so striking!ReplyCancel

  • LindaJuly 17, 2015 - 10:20 am

When I get to crafting I go BIG… I like to spend time doing it. I’ve even taken a day off work (pre-planned) to spend the day at home in my scrapbook room! Becca, your creations are absolutely awe inspiring – I would love to know how you come up with your ideas. You may have said before but I am not always able to keep up with your blog. By the way, I love the new look! :) God bless and Happy Crafting!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
Beautiful card I don’t know how you come up with your ideas and the way you use the dies. When I craft and get an idea I will do it in small bits and take my time. You inspire me to try using my dies in different ways.ReplyCancel

I craft until the mojo leaves me or my time runs out. we have a womem’s tri-annual get together and I try to have ideas that I want to work on… at the ready so when I have the time I can just have at it. these are perfect opportunities. then late on sat. (if i’m lucky) my mojo just sails away. I wish it would at least send a postcard from where it goes. then i’m done, until it comes home. todays card is beautiful as always. love the upside down corner.ReplyCancel

I tend to craft in a BIG session. I have a tv in my craft room and I have it on all the time just to tell time. My husband makes fun of me, but when the news comes on, I know it’s time to quit for the night. Otherwise I would craft until the wee hours of the morning. Then I can’t wait to get off work to get back to crafting. Do you think I have a problem?ReplyCancel

Good Morning Becca. Loved The layering of the card today and the Grate Effects background die. I’ve been wondering what to do with this die; now I have some good ideas–thanks to your inspiration. As to the question asked today: when creativity strikes, it is usually late at night and I’m in it for the long haul. I’ve watched the sun come up (the only way I see a sunrise as I’m so NOT a morning person) finishing up a project on which I’ve worked all night. It is so exciting to have ideas that you just have to see them work out “for real!”ReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 17, 2015 - 10:56 am

Oh my gosh, there are times when I sit at my desk & fiddle around with some paper & dies & never make a thing. No mojo. ????
Then, usually when I am in the middle of making dinner, cleaning, trying to sleep, the light bulb goes off! Wham! ???? I have a great idea. I can fly through a project that turns out beautiful! Then I don’t want to stop. I just want to keep going, & going, & going, & going. Poof! Just like that, some piece of reality rears its ugly head & I have to stop. ( sometimes it’s my dog needing attention, or my husband. Imagine that!)
Every once in awhile, I do actually spend a small amount of time with great results. But usually, I am binging. ????ReplyCancel

  • DianeJuly 17, 2015 - 10:57 am

Just beautiful! Please, please ask me to send my address! To answer your question, I have a really hard time settling in but once I get going I am on a roll. So I prefer large chunks of time to craft.ReplyCancel

  • SuzzieQJuly 17, 2015 - 11:05 am

When creativity strikes, I like to have a big session, no food, no drink. Many times, however, it will take several days for me to complete one special card. When that happens, I do spread out the “playing time” into shorter sessions. Piercing is one of my favorite techniques to use on my card layers. I like this Spellbinders Victorial Bow Corner. You are so creative to turn this corner pointing to the special message on your card.ReplyCancel

  • Maria RodriguezJuly 17, 2015 - 11:06 am

Well Becca, with my grandchildren off on Summer brake and my Triathlon training, I make cards whenever I find a little window of time, my hubby comes home at around 3:30pm. and we usually go out with the kiddos or by ourselves. I love participating in challenges, they usually last one week so, I can make one or two cards a week to submit to them. Crafting is my way to recharge my batteries, the other way is to go for a bike ride or a nice long swim.
Thank you for offering your amazing cards for us to win, I hope today is my lucky day.
    Hugs.

This card is sheer elegance today! It will serve as a source of inspiration in my humble endeavors!
My creative juices usually flow most freely when I’m in the midst of a project. As I look at various things that inspire me and generate ideas, I find the creativity begin to flow which concludes when the card is completed and I feel a sense of satisfaction with how it turned out.ReplyCancel

  • MildredJuly 17, 2015 - 11:15 am

Sadly, just a little at a time because a longer session just doesn’t seem to work out. Another very lovely card, Becca.ReplyCancel

  • Chris BakerJuly 17, 2015 - 11:20 am

That’s a tough question. I guess it all depends on the time I have towards a project and the need of completion. Quiet often, I’m asked by someone at church to make them a card (they donate money to a church project). I try to have some parts to a card already to go for those who ask and need it the next day. That way I keep the stress down on my part.ReplyCancel

Oooooooh this isa lovely new die……Bekka Feeken! You are so bad for my budget!!! I’m afraid my motto is ‘go big or go home’ so when it’s time, the kitchen table disappears under photos/paper/tools unless it’s summertime…then we have landscaping projectsReplyCancel

  • Doreen RitchieJuly 17, 2015 - 11:25 am

Creativity clearly strikes you a Lot Becca because you produce such wonderfully beautiful cards, like today’s! Because I have to work in the dining room I tend to craft big sessions at a time and if I think of something different, I sketch it out in readiness for when I am able to get started.

  • DesireeJuly 17, 2015 - 11:40 am

I usually craft a little at a time. I probably craft a maximum of an hour or two end up coming back later and finishing up whatever I am working on (mostly cards). I don’t seem to have the attention span to do much longer then that at a time. Or sometimes I feel like it’s not coming together right so I walk away and try again later. :-)ReplyCancel

I try to follow the advice “Create something every day,” which may take the form of stamping something to get it ready for coloring, assembling a card, or just coloring some images. I tend to stockpile things and then have big marathons of card making. This is such a beautiful card! I never win anything, but I appreciate the opportunity to be in the running!

What a beautiful card, Becca. I love the sentiment, and it is so clever the way you used the corner upside down to showcase it. Just beautiful!

  • Diane MinerJuly 17, 2015 - 12:18 pm

I craft in both ways. I love to go to crops with friends and then I do a lot of card making. That usually happens about 4 times a year. At other times I hunker down to my desk and make cards for 3 or 4 hours at a time. Often half of that time is design thinking. Either way works for me. Then there is the “oops I forgot to get a card ready for someone’s birthday etc.”…that is usually one I already designed but just had to sit down and make it. Those are about 1 hour or less to create and get into the mail!ReplyCancel

Usually I only make cards close to the date it is required. For me it is necessary to have someone in mind or I’m totally blocked. This even applies to Christmas cards! I can endorse the saying ‘it is possible to think too much’ but I don’t know how to stop. How sad!ReplyCancel

  • MaryannJuly 17, 2015 - 12:26 pm

And you´ve just done it again today Becca, and made such an amazing card here. Sooo elegant and beautiful as usual.
I try to take it in small steps if my creativity strikes, and then some times I just fall over something really exiting by accident, so I habve to give it a try, or some times it can be a friend comming over, who´s bringing the interest back again, or something quite different again, but I´ll never get on with a larger project, if I´ve been a bit stuck for a while, then it´s better to go easy then, I´ve learned.ReplyCancel

Yikes! when the moment of enlightenment strikes the world around me stops. It’s a whirlwind affair digging through everything and prepping my work table for several hours of production. My husband also knows it’s time to disappear and go fishing. The first card always takes the longest because I’m trying to piece together a vision with the ‘right’ pieces. There is no time for snacking or bathroom breaks until I feel satisfied with the end product. Then I make at least 3 more of the same for the future. Then it’s break time until the next inspiration hits.ReplyCancel

    Good day Becca,
I am always so busy that I have to do a little at a time. Only on Tuesday night do I get together with about 5-6 others and some times creativity doesn’t always lend itself to the timing but if it does, I try to finish right then. Otherwise, I have to try to remember the plan and do it as soon as I can get back to it. If it is a rush to get mailed I try to make the amount of time it will take to finish it. About as clear as mud, right?
Thanks for the tip on the piercing technique. This is a wonderful card and I would sure love to have it. Thanks for all you do for our hobby!!

What a beautiful card. Simple but elegant. Creativity strikes when I least expect it sometimes. When it does, it all depends on how much time I have. If it’s a day where I have nothing planned I just lose myself in it. Other times I work for as much time I have before my mojo goes away.ReplyCancel

  • Sandy ArtmanJuly 17, 2015 - 3:55 pm

    Happy Friday, Becca,
This daily focus on paper crafting is a blessing in my life right now – two people close to me are seriously ill and having this joy every day helps to keep me in balance. I have been spending a little time each day working on my own cards. As I write this, I am made aware that creativity plays this role in my life all the time but right now I have a heightened awareness.

It usually takes a while before the creative ‘juices’ starts to flow and, for that, I like big sessions to give myself permission to play as much as possible!

    Love & blessings,
    SandyReplyCancel

When inspiration hits. It takes the time it takes to produce what you visualise in your head. Me it can take days to sort out the colors co ordinate, the dies the ribbon and other embellishments. Then there is this thing that I call a comfort zone feeling with what I am making be it card scrap or fabric.
If I don’t have that comfort feeling I leave it for a while them come back. If I don’t leave it just doesn’t turn out satisfying enough.

If it’s a creative lightening bolt, I do one big session especially if I can see different variations. While everything is out, make use of it. If there are elements that I can see but not a complete design, I mull it over & do it in increments as the design comes to me.ReplyCancel

  • Sandi SmithJuly 17, 2015 - 5:06 pm

Hi Becca- Your card is another beauty! I love the Grate Effects die because it gives detail and texture to the background of the card. All the dies that go with the Adorning 25 dies are a favorite of mine. I love the shape and turning the Victorian Bow Corner die upside down is so creative.
When I craft, I tend to work as long as I can. If that means an all nighter, then I stay up. I’ll even forget to stop to eat. My wonderful husband will remind me or bring me something but once I get going and the MOJO starts, I find it difficult to stop.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
    Another elegant beautiful card today.
How so I craft when inspiration strikes? Usually I craft most days, and mostly to make something that has been ordered. I often plan in my head first before going to the craftroom and sometimes things just happen and my project turns out differently from how I planned. I love to craft either with going to a plan or just freestyling, inspiration just comes all sorts of ways. I hope I get a chance to receive one of your cards, they are all beautiful.

I do both long involved sessions and a bit at a time. The long sessions take place when there are meals cooked, laundry done, house clean, etc. Only then do I seem to be able to relax into it. This goes for straightening the craft room, too. Once in a while there is an all-out tidy-up-or-drown session. I do get in for a few minutes at a time, now and then, to put a few things away before I am buried by bits and pieces. And, if I’m working on a project or two, I will jump in to take a second look and add or take away.ReplyCancel

Great Card Becca. You have shown me something today which I have not thought about doing, so now I am challenged to try this as I have several corner dies. When crafting I do both. Sometimes it will be a whole day creating maybe just one card to get all the colors I wish to incorporate for that special person I am sending a card to. When sending multiple cards for special holidays and I have already a template I can usually go much faster. Saving cards with a history of how I did it helps a lot.ReplyCancel

Just running behind in posting a comment, have had the grandsons here helping me and I don’t get to the computer as much as I like.
Your card is absolutely stunning Becca, I love these colors that you use and the quote from Wordsworth is beautiful.
As to design and crafting I guess I do it when I have to, I have way to many supplies and I trying to get them organzised so that I can just go with the flow. I have the space.
This is why my grandsons are helping, we are sorting and organizing. They will be here again late today till Thursday. Then I won’t have them till maybe Thanksgiving break and Christmas, all the activities start next week with Band Practice as the oldest boy is in the Marching Band and they compete so they are really busy up and till the end of October, but this year it will go on as they are going to Disney World to march in the Thanksgiving Parade there What an awesome trip for him.

What a beautiful card, Becca! I’d say most cards I create are more on the simple side. Lots of layers, matting, etc. but nothing so elegant and elaborate as yours :)ReplyCancel

  • Gretchen WilsonJuly 16, 2015 - 9:12 am

Another absolutely gorgeous card Becca. Well my card style would be ornate if I could do them all that way, but then since I have a lot of males in the family I usually go a little grunge! It really depends who I am making the card for, I always try to do something that they will like, me I like them all, not matter what kind, like the homemade ones the best. I get a real kick out of my hubby when he goes to buy a card for me, most of the time it looks like it’s home made, he can really find some rather pretty ones out there.
Becca, the paper looks tan to me in the picture, but you said Neenah Solar White. I see the green in the picture, so I’ve got that covered, so am I missing something?

My cards are very simple, although I love those ornate ones. I just don’t seem to ever make them or the more layered ones. I also don’t add so many embellishments, because I mostly mail mine, at least that’s the excuse I use!(maybe it’s because I want to keep those for myself)!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. Most of my cards would be on the simple side but with layering and embellishments. I’m trying to up my game and make more of them more ornate and/or elegant. Since I live in the backwoods of nowhere everything has to be mailed and that sometimes gets in the way. Love your work and your talent!

  • Marilyn in E~TownJuly 16, 2015 - 9:23 am

Simple or ornate, great question. . . for me it all depends on the mood I’m in, who the card is being made for and the reason the card is being made, so I guess the answer to todays question is both!

Another gorgeous creation here today Becca.
My cardstyle is definitely more like yours, but ofcause it also depends on, who the card is for, as I most times try to make it the style, I know the reciever is most into, but I´m not good at all to make CAS cards, as they always looks terrible boring and dull, when I´ve tryed that, and if I make them after my standsards, they´re definitely much more decorated with ribbons, flowers and lots of bling, as that´s some of the things, I can´t stand for myself he he he.ReplyCancel

My style is variable. I usually make more ornate cards, but I do CAS cards if I am in the mood. One thing I do not do is grunge!!!!!!! I look at cards I see on the internet and think that some of them look great – but not for me I’m afraid. I have very occasionally made a steampunk card – but very “tidy” steampunk …. lol!!

I love the sentiment on todays card. My family all live in the north east of England and although I left forty years ago it is still “HOME”. Friends laugh when I say I am going home to visit my sister! Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

Simple, simple, simple! I love looking at ornate cards but just can’t do them. Love your cards but I would never attempt to copy them. I’m a plain & simple card maker. :)ReplyCancel

I really like the embossing detail with pearls on the top and bottom of sentiment oval and of course your bow and pearls! Thank You for the Spellbinders 25% off sale information. I ordered up some new dies and embossing folders so I can give a try at making a Becca Feeken inspired card. I make simple cards but you’ve inspired me to try the elegant look which I prefer but have been hesitant to try until now.ReplyCancel

  • Rai LynnJuly 16, 2015 - 9:41 am

My style? That’s a good question. It depends upon who I am working with. If children, there is no defined style. I create card parts and let them go. They are told what we are doing and for whom. When working with adults, I will kit cards and let them go. I guess I’m more of a facilitator than card maker.ReplyCancel

  • Charlotte ZweigoronJuly 16, 2015 - 9:43 am

My style is ornate. Years ago a friend pointed me towards your website and your style sang to my heart! Your site was the very first I ever subscribed to and it is where I go for inspiration and tutorials. There is something ever so soothing about your voice and your smile… never hold back that smile! When I do sets of notecards for gifts, I tend toward a more simple style (not so much dimension, anyway) because I want the recipient to be able to use the cards easily.ReplyCancel

  • KathyJuly 16, 2015 - 9:44 am

Always layers and I always add an inside paper to write on. Can’t do just a card with no layering. Just looks cheeseieeee..”love the oval …thanks for your kindness in the giveaways ….your soooooooooo awesome!!!ReplyCancel

  • Clare WJuly 16, 2015 - 9:46 am

Love the card and the stand it is sitting on has caught my eye also. That’s a good idea I might borrow! My style is more ornate. I !love filigree and fancy. Simple always looks a tad bland and naked to me. Some say less is more but think I subscribe to the more is more. Although there is a fine line between more and too much.ReplyCancel

  • Stephanie WJuly 16, 2015 - 9:47 am

‘afternoon Becca. Another wonderful card today and a great layout for any occasion. That little hint of green looks great, but so does every other element, well you know who’s artistic work it is don’t you!
My cards tend to ‘be’ (read as ‘look’) quite elaborate :) I love my dies and pearls etc. I would feel I was cheating if I didn’t have several layers. Besides ‘simple’ is very different to ‘easy’. I would love to be able to create pleasing ‘clean and simple’ cards but no can do!!
OOOOOps, sorry, my comments seem to get longer each day.

The style of card I most like to make is a lacy one. I have many dies for getting a lacy look, and somehow I seem to still buy more. I am secretly drawn to CAS cards though, and have pinned many layouts. But when I make them I am disappointed! They need lace!ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card today Becca. I tend to be more ornate with lots of layering and pearls. I tend to try and make cards that the recipient would like. If they like something more simple, than that is what I make. That is what is great about card making. The style and words can be so specific to the person. When I found your website many years ago, it turned my card making from simple and basic to more “wow”. You have shared so many tips and I am so grateful for all your help in bringing the level of my cards up a number of notches. Have a wonderful day.ReplyCancel

I have a variety of ways I do cards, some can be very basis, while others will be layers upon layers with all kinds of things. I do love vintage and shabby-chic, so I do lean more towards that style. I too make my cards specific for the person I am making it for. I’ve accumulated a lot of dies and embossing folders and always try to use them in most of my cards. I am not a fan of cartoon type of cards so I stay away from that side of the spectrum. More realistic is my style. I love your cards and would love to own all the dies you have so I could scrap-lift all your designs.ReplyCancel

I am terrible at tying bows but love using diecuts, but the ones I have never seem to layer right. Oh well. I just keep on trying. I really don’t like a lot of “white” space on a card. Hi, Becca,
One comment I read used the terms “filigree and fancy” and that would definitely describe my favorite style but I think “elegant” or “sophisticated” describe most of the cards I make.

In the past year, I’ve become hooked on cards that have cuts and folds – shutter cards are my favorite but I’ve also made waterfall cards, block cards and never-ending cards (kids really enjoy these because of their interactive character). Thank the Lord for YouTube tutorials!

    Thank the Lord for you!

I love frilly, lacey cards with lots of handmade flowers on them (I particularly enjoy making flowers), and most definitely have a love of all things pink. I would love to add more bows, but I seem to only manage smaller ones that look good. How I wish I could make the kind of bows you make so beautifully!ReplyCancel

    Morning Becca
I love making ornate cards with a shabby shek look.
But when I make a card I think (imagine) of the person receiving it or have enough info about the person to be given the card and then just let it all flow out of me. I try the look of different colours with different dies. But some people are rich color people some are planner color people. It’s hard to explain. Some a combination color people. A bit like an aurora they same some people have. Gee it sounds like a lot crap mumbo jumbo. LOL
    Many thanks

I like to think my style is traditional to vintage. I love Victorian ornate, but lean toward a 1920’s style most often for cleaner lines and a bit less fussiness for sending to others. I have admired your work for several years and it only gets better by the day! Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.ReplyCancel

  • kath marshJuly 16, 2015 - 4:16 pm

Such a heart warming sentiment and one that could apply to anyone. Your talent never ceases to amaze me as one as I am artistically challenged! I trust your blog to give me that ‘special’ card which most people need at some time or other and as you get older need them even more.
More your gift last for years and years to come.

Hi Becca! I absolutely LOVE this card and certainly hope that you draw my name for it, please, please! Love the light brown (beige? tan? sand-colored) textured cardstock and the really fancy oval die. My card style is definitely more on the ornate side. The front of my card is normally made up of many layers, and 99% of the time, at least one of those layers is a die-cut.ReplyCancel

  • dorothy harrisonJuly 16, 2015 - 4:23 pm

Wow! That is beautiful! Perfect for either male or female!!
I don’t do really simple cards very well, I look at them and always think they need something more. sometimes I do more ornate cards, learning how to layer from you, how to add different die sets to add different dimensions and of course I have learned How to make great photos with your bow maker! However I really look at the card and think I’ve done almost as well as Becca could do, I always think he would have done something a little different so that it would have more of a “wow” factor… but I am constantly learning constantly growing and constantly changing, & I think that is what we can truly half of our selves. thank you for your inspirations Becca!ReplyCancel

I love this color combination! My style is somewhere in between simple and more ornate. I do find I am not very comfortable with having plain card stock showing, but not big on lots of layers. A lot of time using Versamark and a related stamp on the layer of cardstock before affixing my main panel does the trick for me. BUT, I LOVE looking at your creations, no matter how many layers. Go figure! :)ReplyCancel

  • Beth JonesJuly 16, 2015 - 4:35 pm

I love everything about this—the color combination, the ribbon bow, the sentiment, and all the ovals, especially the filigree edge on the
largest one and the embossing on the central one. I would love to win this. My favorite style somewhat depends on the occasion,
simpler for young people’s events, sympathy, and masculine, but more ornate for feminine birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, and
    sometimes get well.ReplyCancel

Oh, I like to make ornate cards – very detailed and intricate die cuts, dry embossed, heat embossed, layered with about 7 or 8 layers not counting ornamentations, bows, flowers and leaves, butterflies, and BLING! I also decorate the inside. Now when I make cards for men, I am challenged – can’t use all that bling, etc. I made my first wired ribbon bow for a card yesterday. Beautiful. I am still trying to make your style bow, but have not gotten there yet. You make the most gorgeous bows of anybody that I have seen. I like this new Spellbinders oval set. Will place this set on my “want list”. Thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

Good Evening, Becca. I love the ovals on today’s card and the sentiment about “no matter what road you travel, you are always going home” is very poetic. In answer to today’s question: my usual card style is on the ornate side. I use multiple layers and lots of embellishments or die cuts. You’ve always been a great inspiration to me for the great Spellbinder examples of what is possible for really beautiful cards. I can almost get a perfect bow because I’ve had your bow maker for some time, although I do have to review the CD now and again.ReplyCancel

  • lorrayne ingramJuly 16, 2015 - 6:17 pm

Without a doubt, ornate! All my friends whom I craft with, all know I follow you..If I am short on time, I will use my cricut explore, and then try to “dress” it up. I needed a quick thankyou card yesterday, my husband said it is “okay”. He notices that it was not made with my spellbinders dies. If he wants me to make a card, it is never clean and simple, it is always layered. It is that time thing that sometimes makes a difference . :)ReplyCancel

  • Barbara TranquillaJuly 17, 2015 - 7:08 am

Hi Becca, I call this card simple elegance but the beautiful bow moves it into the ornate. Both styles are effective. I believe the simple is harder to design because so much depends upon color selection, placement, size of elements. Not easy unless you have your talent. I tend to go for ornate to show the recipient that at least effort went into the card if not talent and all the layering dies from Spellbinders makes it easy to do. Keep sharing and I’ll keep duplicating. Nothing wrong with going with success. Thanks for your designing efforts, always winners whether ornate or simple.ReplyCancel

Cardmaking Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Mary Strip - www.amazingpapergrace.com
So here we are at the half way point! I have to admit that this month has been a highlight to my 8 year blogging career.  Had I known how well received these gifts would be, I would have made them available long before now.  (Picture me thinking about what happens after July….)  Today I’m giving away a card that I promised to give last November.   I had to wait until I published how to make the encased border (requested tutorial) and I did that in a post HERE.

For today’s comment –  just curious – are your card making talents shared with all or reserved primarily for those who are connoisseurs of handmade?  Is handmade sent for any occasion or just special?  There’s no right or wrong here – just a preference.

Beautiful card today! I really like the gold a lot! To answer your questions, I don’t really share publicly the cards I make. I do have a blog that I created to mainly keep track of what I make and post a few things to online card class galleries. I don’t ever post to Facebook the things I’ve made. Just doesn’t feel right for some reason. Guess I’m not that confident! Lol! I occasionally make something just because, but most often it’s for an occasion. I’ve loved your questions! I have been making cards for family and friends for more than 10 years and it’s always for special occasions and the Holidays. All of my recipients always appreciate and love my cards, they email me or call me to tell me they have cards from years ago, they say they just can’t bring themselves to discard them, several of them use my cards to decorate for the Holidays, that makes me feel so warm inside.
I also make cards for Operation Write Home, who sends hand made card to our valiant troops overseas. I love thinking I’m helping our Heroes stay in touch with their families.
I also created a blog last December because my dear crafting buddies kept insisting I should share my cards more publicly, it’s been loads of fun.
I hope you visit me sometime, Becca.
Hugs and thank you for the chance to win your amazing cards.

We have 2 groups that meet during the school year to make cards. The adult group makes cards for special groups, such as the military, cancer support groups, church staff, etc. The 2nd group is children. We make cards all year for our nursing home ministry. In general, we make cards for holidays. Many of these folks have no one, so these are very special. It also helps to keep the craft moving to the next generation.ReplyCancel

Another stunning card today. I only ever send handmade cards for all occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, sympathy, get well, thinking of you, thank you and congratulations. Everyone expects a handmade card from me and I daren’t buy a card to send! I like to think all my cards are special but I make ‘extra special’ cards for ‘big’ birthdays, such as 30, 40, 50 etc., or silver, gold, etc anniversaries. It certainly keeps me busy!!

  • NancyJBJuly 15, 2015 - 7:50 am

I have a list of family and friends with their birthdays and anniversaries by date. There are 97 on that list right now. I send those out each year and then I send others throughout the year when I see a need such as illness, graduation, encouragement, etc. Also I send lots of thinking of you just to let my friends and family know they are in my thoughts and prayers and I send around 100 Christmas cards each year.
Some of my friends are other card makers but the majority are not.ReplyCancel

I must admit that I do only send my cards I make usiing a paper embroidery skill with family members and close friends because it takes so much time to complete a card. I guess that I want these cards to go to “good homes” where it will be loved and nurtured…..LOL.

I loved this card when I first saw it and still do! Most of the time I make my own cards but if it is someone that I don’t think would appreciate it, like a few of DH business colleagues, then I use others. Although you just never know as I found out when one of my neighbors told me that she kept all of my Christmas cards I sent and pulls them out each holiday for decorations. You just never know who will like them.ReplyCancel

I only give handmade cards. All our Christmas cards are handmade, then I also do them for all holidays to about 12 people and any other occasions. I give packages of cards as gifts or just as a thank you to doctors, receptionists, etc. or just to people who have been helpful or kind. Any excuse to give a handmade card. I enjoy making them and giving them.

When I started making cards not so long ago I decided to make my Christmas cards. It took me quite a long time as I only have the occasional evening and being new to card making I’m not very quick. When my brother-in-laws sister opened her card she thought it was lovely and wanted to know where I got it from, upon being told that I made it she thought it was extra special. That made it worth all my effort. Now the family like to see what card they get as each one is different.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. I do send handmade cards to a large proportion of friends and family but if I am short of crafting time those who I know, don’t actually appreciate the time, effort & let’s face it, money that goes into a hand crafted card will be the ones with a shop bought one. In the past I have had comments that shows relatives don’t understand the work that goes into one of my cards. These range from ‘why not make a card – it has to be cheaper than shop bought’ to a disbelief that I actually coloured the images etc.ReplyCancel

Becca today’s card is out of this world. Sublime, magnificent, superb, stunning, drop dead gorgeous, indescribably beautiful or words to that affect :). Would you say I like it? lol
I am retired and have quite a small number of family(but growing)and smaller number of friends. None of them are into card making, scrapbooking etc. but I’m always very delighted to explain how their card was made. The usual response is “it’s beautiful but I’d not have the patience, thank you very much for it though”.(!)I buy some (Charity)Christmas cards and make every thing else except when an occasion creeps up on me. Do any of you crafters get the feeling that sometimes your efforts are considered to be ‘a cheap way out’? Boy, are they wrong! Just one friend occasionally has the courage to ask me to make a card for someone in her life.
Thank you Becca for sharing so much with us – never stop. Hugs xxReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 15, 2015 - 10:44 am

Great questions, Becca! Wow, you have been thinking about these haven’t you?
Since I have been creating with paper, my family pretty much expects handmade. (At least in my mind.) My Christmas card list is not that long any more, so I usually plan something simple for the majority, and save the complex ones for those that I know appreciate them. Not to be self- serving, but my cards & projects are very nice.
That opens a new can of worms. Since what I make is usually not very simple, & my competition is myself, I do stress myself out by setting the bar higher each year. My craft space is not very big, and my work area is even smaller, lol, so when I am in the middle of a project, oh my, what a mess I have! Sometimes I can’t hear myself think!
I do enjoy this paper crafting stuff. Makes me smile to think about it! Wish I could not eat or sleep, just create!ReplyCancel

    • Sandy ArtmanJuly 15, 2015 - 8:39 pm

      Hi, Kristine,
It made me laugh to read your comments. You are a kindred spirit, for sure! I may have ‘to-do’ lists a mile long but I have never regretted immersing myself in my paper world. At times it feels more like meditation – the loss of time awareness, the single-mindedness and the divine gift of ideas. Yep, I’m totally hooked at so many levels!

Isn’t it amazing how you keep sailing over that bar time after time? That’s how love is!
      Blessings,
      SandyReplyCancel

Good morning, Becca. I’m really enjoying the 30 days of giving series although I don’t seem to be able to comment on every one. I am reading them in batches! I love the encased border technique; thanks for the reminder that I wanted to try this one day! I share my card making talents with everyone. However, I do make extra special ones for special occasions and for “special” people. There are several crafting people that I know have an appreciation for the technical aspects and those I really go all out! My family expects handmade. In fact, I am always behind in cards for birthdays, so I sent a store bought card to a grand niece recently and she asked her Mom why I didn’t love her any more. I guess there will be no more store bought cards to family members! Thanks for this wonderful emphasis on saving the written greeting. You are great.ReplyCancel

I get behind on sending thank you cards when I don’t have a stash of handmade ones to pick from as I feel like I’m cheating to use a store-bought one any more! ALL my cards are handmade. One because my peeps seem to appreciate them more and two because I can’t stand to pay the price of store bought cards when I have the means to make one at home! : ) My peeps have insisted I start a blog. That’s still a work in progress, but whoever stops by always asks for ‘show-and-tell’ of the latest projects.ReplyCancel

I give hand-made cards to anyone that gave time to me or my loved ones; the surgeon who saved my mom, the specialist in HR who helped me with all the paperwork when I was out ill, etc. Of course I do the birthdays and celebrations for family and friends, but I like put in time to a card for someone who clearly out their own time in for me!ReplyCancel

OOooo, what a lovely card, Becca. The layout is just so interesting with the lacy edge. Thank you for showing it again.

I send hand made cards to anyone, for any occasion. I love the process, the creativity of card making, so I have a little stash going all the time from which to draw when I want to send something. But every so often I get caught. I wanted to send thank you cards to the ladies who sang the special music in church last Sunday, and I didn’t have any musical cards in my stash! So I quickly had to crank two out to send them.ReplyCancel

I share with all… I teach a class and I sell my cards so I never know when someone will be interested in either of those when they see what a handmade card can be. And, I use them for any occasion including as gift card sets for Hostess gifts. I’d rather make a card than go shopping for one, anyway..!ReplyCancel

I send or give handmade cards for everything. Haven’t bought a card in years. The recipients rave about them and many have framed them, or at least save all my cards.

Becca, your card today is so beautiful. I did one similar to this with the decorative border cut through both sides, but at the bottom. I like it on the side… never thought to do it that way. Thanks for sharing. xxReplyCancel

I was so happy to see that encased border tutorial! And now the card here. I just love your work, and one can’t go wrong with Suzanne’s gorgeous stamps!

If I am giving a card, it is handmade. If there is something going on in my husband’s office, they call me for a card. He works for the excise tax folks for the IRS, so it,s not a huge office, but a regional one, so I have some presence out there! I occasionally end up in a crunch and have to buy a card, but it doesn’t happen often and it pains me when it does…not more than once every couple years or so….

I’m having surgery on my ankle tomorrow, so I’m sadly going to miss a couple days of this…but I’m going to back read and catch up.. This has been a good discipline for me this month. Thanks again, Becca. This has been the hidden gem of my summer.ReplyCancel

I had a terribly difficult time giving away my cards when I first started. My beginner abilities showed, and I measured my success against crafters who blogged, had experience, and possessed lots more crafting tools and supplies than I. I first gave my cards to people who were “safe”. Those who treasured needlework samplers made with hours and hours of care and those who loved my scrapbooks designed to help us count our many blessings were on the “safe list”. When a friend told me that my cards were better than the hand made ones she purchases in a local shop, I started giving them to everyone and for all occasions except Christmas. I can’t handle the volume for all that we do to celebrate Jesus’s birthday.

I am continually surprised at how people go out of the way to express thanks for a humble card bearing a scripture and a note of encouragement. That encourages me to keep crafting.ReplyCancel

I do on occasion make some cards (Christmas/Mother’s/Father’s Day)and my office staff bought them to give to their families. Everyone tells me my cards are too beautiful to toss and keep them all. I too have had people tell me they too incorporate my cards into their holiday home decorating, which makes me feel special. Thanks for the opportunity to win a card.ReplyCancel

Every time I give someone a card, it is handmade. I have a couple of friends who would actually be offended if I sent them a store bought card. Although sometimes it would be so easy just to go buy a card that has the perfect sentiment, where I don’t have to come up with the right words to say. I give a handmade card for any occasion that comes up. Everybody gets a handmade card from me… my mail lady, our garbage man, our neighbors, my grocery store clerk, and all my friends and family.ReplyCancel

I have been giving handmade cards for years and pass them out for any occasion. In particular I could mention that I make laminated Bible verse cards that are half an A4 size so that people can put them up on their walls. These I use as birthday cards for every person who regularly attends our church (where my husband is the Pastor). I think most people appreciate the effort and thought behind handmade cards.ReplyCancel

When I first got ‘hooked’ on cardmaking and felt confident and comfortable about sharing my newfound love, I had my gfs over for ‘lunch & fun’ and had mini sessions of card making. This evolved into 9 yrs and going of card classes with 45 friends……no product to sell or money involved except to pay for supplies used. We now have 5 girls who all rotate teaching/sharing their works every month. I send ‘specially-made’ cards to special people and those who really appreciate these cards. Cards that are not as ornate go to others who don’t seem to be aware of the work that goes into the production or seemingly blind to it. But I do want to include all because I care for them and I remember birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, sympathy and everything else in between.ReplyCancel

I LOVE this card. The gold on the side really sets it apart. As for my cards, I send handmade cards to anyone that I would send a card to whether they stamp or not. So many tell me how much they like receiving one and one of my sister-in-laws actually frames some of them. It’s a rare occasion that I purchase a card and when I do, it’s usually for my hubby as I don’t think I can make one that quite meets what I want to express to him. Keep the cards coming. • Karen M. RothJuly 15, 2015 - 6:05 pm

This card is so lovely that I really want it! I will tell you why: I just found out that I have Emphysema with COPD and that I also have minimal damage to the lining of my lungs for which they can do nothing for the lining. Also found out that Albuterol is not even working for me. They want to put me on Spiriva and an inhaled Steroid.

So you see, todays quote really speaks to me hard. My sweet hubby is also facing some serious health issues himself. So we can really use prayers and encouragement right now. You just really have to learn in each circumstance that you find yourself to be Thankful for the little things in this life because life is not guaranteed it is a priceless precious gift from God.

Now to answer your question about my preference, I make cards only for those I care deeply for and it is for all Occasions and sometimes just for the encouragement I have been seeking all my life for myself and have never received. Even though I am only 43 I have had a very traumatic hard life and I have always tried to turn my “Ashes into Beauty” with God’s help and to be an inspiration for others.

I just have one more thing to say: Do not spend your life just sitting and waiting for the good things to happen to you. Be an active participant in your life and chase your Dreams with fervor and never let go. Take from me, I have learned too late to see my dreams come true.ReplyCancel

  • Cathy ThompsonJuly 15, 2015 - 6:10 pm

    Dear Becca,
No reservation for me. Yes, it is heartwarming to have someone realize that I made the card for them, but that’s not the heart of the matter for me. It’s more about the person receiving than me giving. It’s an attempt to reach out to them where they are, create something that is pleasing and honoring.
I suppose that’s the best answer I could hope to give. If the gift is all about me, then I probably need to reconsider my attitude.ReplyCancel

    Hi, Becca,
In thinking about how to respond to your question regarding who receives my cards and for what occasion, it’s really quite a challenging subject. Most everyone who knows me knows I make cards. In fact, I just made appreciation cards for the outgoing members of my chorus board and I heard through the grapevine that they were hoping for a “SandyCard”.

The pure and simple answer to your question is that I make cards for everyone and I send them for all occasions with the hope that people will feel special in having received a card made just for them. That being said, I hope to heaven that when people don’t get a handmade card they don’t assume it’s because they’re not special enough. (See? It’s tricky!)

    Love and blessings,
    SandyReplyCancel

    Hi Becca!

Since I simply cannot purchase a card any more :) handmade cards are used for all occasions and to all kinds of folks. And here’s an example of why: When our church women’s group was organizing a Women’s Conference (for about 200 gals), we decided to bathe our speaker in prayer for the entire year we spent planning. I supplied the handmade cards to our planning group and we took turns writing in a card and sending it to her.On the first day of the conference, our speaker said to the audience that she has never felt so pampered or so cared for. She mentioned the cards and…she brought them all with her and….she put them up on a table for all to see.

That is the impact of sending a beautiful handmade card!ReplyCancel

This card is so elegant Becca and I love the tutorial. I already purchased the dies to create my version.
I create cards for all occasions but primarily for adults and also for my Grandchildren who are 14 and 12. Missing the days when I made fun cards for my Grandchildren when they were younger, I was inspired with the idea to create fun cards for children and donate them to our Phoenix Children’s Hospital. I’ve already ordered some cute sentiment stamps to use. As soon as my shoulder has recovered, I’m going to start creating these cards. I’ll still create cards for my gown up family and friends but I definitely get excited with the idea of sharing my love of cards with little ones who are going through a difficult time.ReplyCancel

I hand make all my cards not just for special occasions and I make them for everyone. So far, I’ve never had any negative comments and everyone seems to be happy to have a handmade card. Shows you care I think. Thanks for sharing such a gorgeous card. Would love to win this one (or any of your gorgeous cards actually).ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, A stunning card ,thank you for sharing . I make cards for every occasion I just love making them as I know the recipient do appreciate and some of my friends collect them.If ever I sell some than the money goes to a day centre for the disabled here in our village..ReplyCancel

All of the cards I send are handmade–for special occasions, holidays, get well, sympathy and short notes. All of my friends, relatives and family members get them. I usually make more elaborate cards for those who I know appreciate them but sometimes I get carried away and spend a lot of time on a card for someone who really doesn’t care if it’s homemade just because I enjoy making them.ReplyCancel

I´m always stunned by the beauty on all your work Becca, and this is no exception today. Wonderful work as always and sooo beautiful.
I share my cards and work with all except one person, because she´s the one who never likes any handmade and find that people are cheap, if they give this kind, and I have made her a few earlier, but as she always just read it and then cross it all together with the wrappingpaper and throw it in the bin, I admit, I thought she can as well get one of these very cheap storebought notecards, as she just toss it out anyway LOL, but everybody else gets handmade, unless I don´t have one ready and find out about a birthday or something right here and now.ReplyCancel

Another stunner, I love the ‘lacy’ edge. I dont think I have that die but I know I have one or two that would substitute – though I would much rather win this one made by you.ReplyCancel

Depends on how much time I have but I like to make all my own holiday cards, graduation, wedding and sympathy cards. Typically for those who appreciate them I will try to make birthday cards but they are often a little late. I have a stash of cards at work and those get used for a variety of reasons but mostly for that last minute need. I absolutely love receiving a handmade card so really try to return the favor.ReplyCancel

I share my handmade cards with everyone for all sorts of occasions, but if I know them and that they don’t value that sort of thing I give store bought cards. For example, my husband doesn’t value my handmade cards (he thinks it’s selfish to give something I enjoyed making to someone else because it was more for my pleasure then for theirs)…hard to explain I guess. It doesn’t hurt my feelings that’s just the way his engineers mind works. LOL.ReplyCancel

Wow Becca, this is simply gorgeous!!!! For some unknow reason, I do not remember seeing this one. Boy did I miss out so I am so very glad that you brought it back. I make handmade cards for all family occasions. They seem to look forward to them, and sort of feel slighted if I buy a card versus making it. Just not as personal I guess. But there are times when certain occasions just sneak up on me and I have no choice but to run to the store and buy one.

I almost never buy a card anymore! I will be honest and say that the fancier cards, the more intricate cards, go to those I know will appreciate them or for special occasions. each card is unique and that the sentiment inside is typically written for the specific person. I have a long list for my church family for birthdays and a longer list for Christmas! How can I give someone a store-bought card when they know I usually take the time to make one?ReplyCancel

You create the most beautifully elegant cards I’ve seen. You inspire me to make better cards I’ve showed your cards to Amish card makers. They just drink in your designs. And I know I’ve shown them something very special. Bless you.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Gorgeous card, I do remember you posting this one lol!
My card making is shared with family, some friends and those who I make them for as well as crafty hand making friends from my blog etc. I find that unless a person loves craft themselves, especially cards then they are not really interested in your creations. I know some people I work with consider me to be a boring person because I craft at home rather than going out drinking or partying like they do! I know which I would rather choose lol!

    Love & hugs

I only make Christmas cards. I can’t afford to buy a lot of supplies so just sticking to Christmas cards helps. I make them for both friends and family.ReplyCancel
