If you’re not familiar with 30 Days of Giving and how you can receive this card,  read about it HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by looking under the Features menu item and selecting Giveaway Winners.

Hi there friends, I was especially touched reading your comments yesterday – you are old-fashioned at heart even though you embrace technology.  I have an admission to make – I love my technology but the thing is I know it can bite.   For years I’ve used knitting machines to make sweaters, but I also love knitting by hand – there’s just nothing like the old fashioned way (which I can take on an airplane and take camping).   Lol, it feels like we’re at a crop talking.   I’ve learned more in 10 days about the regulars here and new visitors than I’ve learned in years :-)  Thanks for hanging in there with me!

For today’s comment –  Is crafting a lost art?  What could make it better?

The card that’s being given away today is shown above.  Just a note – this is a card that has been shown before and there is a possibility that some of the supplies that were used are currently discontinued, no doubt there will be something you can substitute – have a look through my galleries for alternative ideas.  Many things can still be found on the open market, just google and you’ll find that many retailers are still selling.

I think lots of people still hand craft it’s the only way we can get what we want, or need. Depending on where you live you don’t have much choice! As always, a beautiful card. Thanks for sharing. blessings, LisaReplyCancel

I think that crafting is as strong an art as it ever was! There are millions of women the have been in this industry and more find it appealing today.ReplyCancel

Crafting is alive and well as an art form! First it is in our nature to be creative. Second, may of my family and friends are crafting enthusiasts. The younger generation in my family also enjoys crafting. My brother does wood crafting including making furniture without nails! My niece in-law does crotchetiness and beading of which she donates the money to charity. Another cousin does beadcrafting and donates all the sales to charity.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, A gorgeous card, truly gorgeous.
Crafting is definitely not a lost art, you only have to go to the Craft Shows to see that, the shows are always really, really busy.

Again, such a beautiful card! Just love it. No I don’t think crafting is a lost art. I think there are many people out there doing many different crafts. In our state we have craft shows all summer long for crafters to show case their work. Love attending them.ReplyCancel

I don’t believe crafting is a lost art. We just need to pass it on to our children and grandchildren and even our great grandchildren. Yes, I have 2 of them. We have a club is the community where I live and we meet every Monday from 8AM-2PM. We have 175 members. Out of that club we have several small groups that meet in our homes week or monthly.ReplyCancel

Crafting requires time and folks don’t make time. They see work like yours and think they can’t do that. We make cards for nursing homes and other organizations at our church. Everything is provided except the “labor”. It’s amazing to find the hidden talents in people. They can’t believe they can make such lovely things. Too bad we don’t make time to work with our hands.ReplyCancel

It was a case of love at first sight with this card. I immediately purchased the dies and the Dainty Doilies stamps although I could never find the Small Dainty Doilies, it was not for lack of trying. I never quite nailed this card the way I envisioned it, but it’s on my To Do List still.

COMMENT: Crafting is far from a lost art, as evidenced by the multi million dollar industry that is thriving on it’s coat tails. So many thing would make it better, for me, is better pricing of supplies, the prices are ridiculously inflated and needlessly so.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca
I don’t believe that crafting is a lost art but I do believe that it changes, trends seem to come and go, over the years I have knitted, done ceramics, sewing, tole painting, needlepoint and now I do cards. I believe that time is the greatest barrier for young people, their lives are so busy.ReplyCancel

  • MichelleJuly 11, 2015 - 9:57 am

Becca, your card is beautiful. I think that crafting is partially a lost art form. I have seen so many scrapbooking stores close. My sister, who is a knitter says a lot of her favorite yarn stores have closed also. I try to teach my grandchildren some things I know to pass on and make memories. I can only hope and pray they will retain the knowledge and pass it on.ReplyCancel

  • Pat BargerJuly 11, 2015 - 9:57 am

I don’t think Crafting is a lost art, but maybe there are fewer of us doing
it, with the busy lives that we live. I hope that we never lose the
desire to want to work with our hands and our minds to create beautiful things!
And, by the way, I’ve never used a knitting machine……always knitted my afghans and sweaters with my knitting needles and two hands! I do think it would be fun to try one out sometime!

Your card is Gorgeous with a capital G today.ReplyCancel

As always, another fabulous card. No I certainly don’t think the art of crafting is lost. I teach crafts on cruise ships and we always get a good turn out. It’s a multi-million dollar industry which is going from strength to strength with ever more beautiful designs being created – such as yours Becca. I can’t think how it can be improved.

  • Christine Harrop Oxfordshire UKJuly 11, 2015 - 10:12 am

Yet again a gorgeous card Becca. I don’t think crafting is dying out, but I do think people can be put off by the high cost of things, particularly here in the UK. US items (dies, stamps etc) cost the same amount in GB£ as US$ – almost twice as much! I have tried to buck the system by buying from the US but by the time you pay the import duty and the Post Office takes its huge handling charge (scandalous) there is no saving at all. But since I love my hobby so much I just have to grin and bear it … lol !! Also during the recession a few years ago a lot of smaller local craft stores had to close their doors. I now have to travel at least 40 miles to buy crafty things. I mostly rely on the internet but it’s not the same as being to physically see and touch things. I’ve come to the conclusion I’m a very tactile person – love the feel of books, fabrics etc. Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

  • BunnyJuly 11, 2015 - 10:15 am

I don’t know that it’s a lost art. it seems that a lot of us don’t have the funds to purchase all the goodies that make cards so lovely. Dies, ribbons, embellishments, sentiments. So many products and techniques. Yes, I know we can make simple cards. Just taking a class to try and better yourself at a technique is very taxing when you’re in a one income family. Sometimes if we want to take a class we have to think about what that money could purchase in that product rather than taking the class. I missed out on taking a class 4 or 5 years ago from a well known coloring artist because it was way out of my price range. Even worse was the fact that I didn’t even own one marker for the class. It has literally taken years to build up my Copic markers. If it wasn’t for sales on items or coupons some of us would have very little. Sometimes there are items that are in our price range but the shipping charges are the same price as the item. Sorry, I think I chased a rabbit.ReplyCancel

What a pretty card, Becca. It so feminine. Perfect to send to a girlfriend.

I don’t think crafting is dying out. I think things like Pinterest, Google, YouTube, Photobucket, Craftsy, etc., have moved it to the next level, combining instant technological sharing with the technologically minded new generation. That being said, I think there is still a huge arena of learning that takes place from mother/grandmother down to daughter. I see many children/grandchildren interested in seeing “how mom did that.”ReplyCancel

When I see so many craft stores closing I fear this is a dying art. However, then I see the thousands of crafters on blogs and websites sharing their projects, ideas, etc. I think it would help for all of us crafters to be sure we teach our children and grandchildren this art. You’ll see how much fun it is to do this with the younger generations and they’ll love it!

Becca, today’s card is beautiful, especially with all the pearls and that sparkly bling in the center! Great job!!

Love the card! No I dont think crafting is a lost art, but it is not an inexspensive art to be sure.Is that why the younger generation has not gone all out on it? Maybe….the small local craft syores are becoming a thing of the past because of the internet, yet we have to look for the best prices to feed our addiction…and if not for the internet, I never would have found you and all of your delicious ideas!ReplyCancel

  • ChristineJuly 11, 2015 - 10:56 am

Hi Becca. No, its not a lost art. Give a creative person a few minutes and ‘something’ will appear. Nearly every child loves to pick up a crayon & love of expression runs through every generation. It is just well hidden at times – especially when there is a computer game to play!ReplyCancel

In my generation (60+) most women are still crafting. It may be paper crafts, quilting, cross stitch, crochet, etc. I also see a lot of crochet, knitting, sewing, paper crafting and quilting in the 40+ age group. I don’t think the younger generation has as much time for crafting with their busy schedules but they enjoy it when they can.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! A beautiful card! I would love to win and frame it! I always feel like you are family!

I believe crafting is alive and well! There are so many areas to choose from! I also include painting in crafts! Oh and soap making and anything made using my mind and hands! If you think about it, even things made on or with a machine begin in our minds and our hands have to initiate our ideas!

I think God gave us crafts to further His Creation! He gave us the gift of Creativity to continue His work!ReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 11, 2015 - 11:23 am

Another gorgeous card today, Becca! I would have a hard time giving all these beauties away, I think. Thank you for being so generous. ??
I think your topic for today is a rather difficult one. When I go to the local scrapbook & stamp conventions, they do appear very crowded & most shoppers have bags full of goodies. Of course, so do I! Lol! And the crowds appear fairly diverse in age, with plenty of younger shoppers in attendance. They do mostly appear to be over 30 years of age.
But when I speak with some of the younger (under 30) crowd, they do not sound very interested in papercrafting. They like digital pictures & keeping them in the cloud. Maybe printing some to share through online printing services. They do not appear very interested in crafts.
And so many of the great local scrapbook stores have fallen by the wayside. Even the big box craft stores have taken on a new flavor over the past several years. When I find a product I really like, I may purchase several as I am not sure if I will be able to find more at a later date in time. ????
That brings me to the non-conclusion that a) younger people are not interested in crafting at all as they are into physical sports & technology; or b) crafting as a hobby does not become appealing until we reach that age when we finally realize we are actually infallible. Or until they start having children, whichever comes first! ????ReplyCancel

  • Peggy BJuly 11, 2015 - 11:30 am

Beautiful card. Your being so kind in having this 30 day give away.
Crafting is changed so much over the years. I do not think it is a lost art but it is harder for people to discover the art of card making with so many stores closing and the big box stores not being hands on. I became a card maker when I went to a stamp store and took classes. That ability to participate is rare to find these days.ReplyCancel

  • JudyBJuly 11, 2015 - 11:37 am

I think it almost depends on the ages of the people for the answer to that question Becca. I’m sure some of us older ladies still enjoy doing things that are in the crafty line. Although, from the looks of pintrest, many people enjoy making things. I love giving something I’ve made myself.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, I have been following your posts for a long time now and I haven’t seen a card I don’t like but today’s is one of the one’s I drool over. LOL. Here in the U.K crafting seems to be going from strength to strength. With lots of TV programmes, craft shows, craft fairs, and demo days. My friends all knit, sew, cross stitch or do papercrafting like me. So I don’t think it will die out for a long time yet. There are lots of products to help or make it easier but there is nothing so satisfying as finishing something you have made from scratch with your own hands.ReplyCancel

p.s. (I was so focused on your card I forgot to answer the question) I know that companies need to keep selling, but I wish (pipe dream) that the world would slow a bit and not need a constant stream of new supplies. I am blessed with a wonderful playroom that is well stocked. The downside of going online to see what people are creating is that the online goal is to make us all want more….and more. If I never bought another thing for crafting (except paper and adhesives) and if I lived to 120, I wouldn’t be able to explore all the creative potential in the supplies I own.ReplyCancel

  • Yvonne WeberJuly 11, 2015 - 11:51 am

I don’t think crafting is a lost art. I know many people who craft at least something. I think the way the economy is now, people try to cut back and by making a gift rather than buying one, it is usually more economical. Sometimes that gift becomes a treasure to the receiver such as a quilt I received last Christmas.ReplyCancel

  • Judy InukaiJuly 11, 2015 - 12:03 pm

No, I don’t think crafting is a lost art. There are a lot of us out there who enjoy making things for the people we love. Technology keeps getting better and better and some of the new die cutting machines enable those who have trouble with their hands continue to do the necessary cutting. My grandma was crafting until about 2 months before she died at 96. Her projects got simpler as her vision started to fail, but she loved making things.ReplyCancel

  • Kenia LancasterJuly 11, 2015 - 12:10 pm

You create inspirational pieces of art! I think the crafting industry is thriving, as evidenced by the growing number of new products online and in stores, however, there is a great number of people who cannot craft due to limited income or lifestyle constraints. I love card-making and would like to, at some point in the future, use my crafting supplies to aid those with mental illness and substance abuse issues. Crafting is immensely therapeutic and can be an essential tool in overcoming anxiety and depression. We reap immeasurable personal value from our own creations and even greater value when we share our gifts with others. Your talent is certainly an inspiration to me.ReplyCancel

  • Lu CJuly 11, 2015 - 12:11 pm

I do not believe crafting is a lost art. It does change, evolve, wane and then double back around and reappear in a new vain. What would make it better is us. We need to not make it a competition. Not to lust after every ‘new’ thing, or compete for recognition. Savor the journey of finding out what you can do with what you have. And then you will know if the next new thing is truly an innovation, or just a makeover of something you already own.
What is right already is the kind, gentle spirit of all who encourage each other in so many different ways to do what is good and fun for you.ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card Becca. This card reminds me of my Mother-she loved roses but what reminds me most is she had a handkerchief that looks like the background paper. She always carried a hanky. As far as crafting I think that its still here with all of us that like to create. You walk into a store to look for a gift and there is really not that special gift. I enjoy crafting and I like that when I give a gift that I have made seeing the eyes of that person is what puts that finish touch on the gift. Thank you for your continuous way of sharing so that we can continue to create. Have a Blessed weekend.ReplyCancel

I don’t think it is a lost art, but I am concerned with all this digital creations. You can’t beat the personal touches that a handmade from scratch and painted or colored can convey. After all it supposed to a piece of love you made for a special person, not just printed or copied. There are occasions for digital, but not always.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I think what Kristine Vencel said is so true, the younger generation have all those gagets and don’t want to learn any kind of craft.I know a lot of stores have closed, one in my town and one in the next town, for I live in a small town so it hurts when they close and have to go far to get my supplies. I do all kind of crafts, beside card making. Love you card today.ReplyCancel

  • JuanitaJuly 11, 2015 - 12:47 pm

Another gorgeous card. I don’t think crafting is a lost are but is changing to those who do not have the time to do it. Newer crafts are emerging and it is catering to those who don’t have a lot of time. Would love to see the younger generation put down their phones and use their precious time to be creative as I know there are many talented young people out there. A lot also depends on if their parents teach them to carry on this tradition.ReplyCancel

  • ChristineJuly 11, 2015 - 12:49 pm

I love to sew decorative items, to cross stitch, to scrapbook, and to make cards. All of those things take time, and I find that without time to relax while being creative, other areas of my life suffer.

While time is an element in crafting, expense is more of a factor. We live in a small rural town, so most of my stamping supplies must be ordered on line. There are several companies that have quality products, but shipping costs are so high! I have to be careful about what I order and often look for sales or opportunities for free shipping.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca. I don’t recall this card for some reason! Like it though. No I don’t think crafting is a lost art. Folks will always find time to do things they enjoy. And technology has helped in so many ways. Take this blog. I still find it amazing that technology can bring together so many disparate people with a common interest. I do think though the crafting industry has got a bit too commercial though and the making something out of nothing philosophy has been replaced by the latest gadgets and gizzmos of which there are numerous! The die market place especially seems to have gone crazy with lots of companies bringing out die ranges every day of the week almost. End of rant!ReplyCancel

  • Joni StonekingJuly 11, 2015 - 1:15 pm

    Lovely card, today, Becca!

I don’t think crafting is going to be a lost art ever. Creating art has always been part of humankind’s journey. I think we have seen a resurgence in knitting over the past several years among younger people who have discovered the art of making scarves. At farmers and artisan markets, it isn’t just older white women any more. (That is a geographical rural note, not a reference to crafting in general) I look at the designers in paper crafting and see some younger up and comers and smile, although I think we may soon hit a tipping point where the market is saturated and the field wanes a bit before experiencing a lull and en a resurgence, the way cross stitching has during my crafting career, what I love is seeing new forms, the nuances and changes and new ways in which traditional…or what we think of as traditional….crafts are changing and evovling. That is coming about because new minds are looking at old ways and seeing something entirely different…and that is why, at the heart of it, I think crafting will not be lost.ReplyCancel

  • Susie NicholsJuly 11, 2015 - 1:22 pm

I don’t think it is lost. I craft with a group of ladies who sometimes bring their daughters or granddaughters. The young people are often more “into it” than us older folks. What I find really funny is when someone mentions learning a “new” technique or craft. For instance this “new” thing called quilling! My grandmother quilled! Like fashion, old will be new once again.ReplyCancel

  • Dar SirrineJuly 11, 2015 - 1:26 pm

I think crafting is not a lost art. Trends come and go, what was popular 20 years ago when I started is now coming back again. I truly believe crafting is the same. My family has always been crafting whether it was wood working, knitting, sewing or whatever; and there are younger family members that do have an interest in it. I know I was in my late thirties before I really wanted to do much. I believe there is hope for the crafter’s of the world to continue on with some sort of crafting.ReplyCancel

I don’t think that crafting “in general” is a lost art. I’ve come across a lot of comments where individuals say that they love to stamp and make their own cards, but have a difficult time coming up with the money to buy the necessary products. I know, for a fact, that stamping can really run into money and it’s not something that I could have been able to afford to do back when my kids were still at home, even though both my husband and I held down jobs. On another note, there are still parents out there that commit to spending quality time with their children, and crafting usually is involved in some form.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca – Another lovely creation today. I don’t think that crafting is a lost art. There are so many wonderful crafts out there that people do and alot of the older crafts are coming back. A few years ago I learned how to Swedish Weave and it is so much fun. Thanks for the generous giveaway you are running.ReplyCancel

I recall today’s card, and it is so beautiful!
Crafting is definitely not a lost art. Most of my friends and family are crafting in some way, even the young ones.
I go to a lot of craft fairs, and they are always crowded with people showing great interest. Maybe crafting will change over time, but I think there will always be people enjoying and taking interest in making things with their own hands.ReplyCancel

What a joy to everyday watch someone who is passionate about keeping card making alive. I think we are training the young of our day to love crafts by doing them at scouts, VBS’s, art classes at community centers and such. I have a friend who is passionate about stamping and teaching Ukraine egg decorating to the young and adults at her local library, she is overwhelmed with the response of so many. We just have to share and get others involved with us as we create. Since God is the Master creator and He passed that on to us we can be assured He won’t let creativity fade away.ReplyCancel

Crafting is definitely not a dying art. I think I begain crafting more out of necessity then anything and I’ll bet there are alot others out there that have started the same way. I just couldn’t seem to find pre-made items exactly how I wanted them or I just couldn’t afford to pay retail for them. So I decided to make my own which is exactly how my parents were. My father was one of the handiest men I have ever met. He was artistic, creative, and very clever and an extremely hard worker. I spent hours in his workshop watching and learning. And although he was handy in almost all trades, his true love was woodworking. Which I also love. I learned so much from both of my parents, but the greatest lesson was that you will never know what you can actually accomplish unless you try.

I fear crafting is becoming a lost art. I think people feel they don’t have time to craft in today’s busy world. That is very sad to me. Crafting calms and grounds me. I think if one could just realize the joy received from crafting more would do it. Unfortunately it can be costly. I think that is the number one reason along with time that more people don’t craft.ReplyCancel

  • JessicaJuly 11, 2015 - 3:04 pm

I think most people who don’t craft and don’t have a friend or family member think it’s a dying art. But all who do it, know there are way more of it going on than non crafters believe. If you think about all the big craft stores like AC MOORE, JOANN, MICHAEL’S etc. Then all the small local stores. Add that to all the online stores sales… no I don’t think it’s dying. Thanks for the chance to win a card made by you. JessicaReplyCancel

No I do not think it is a lost art. I see people every where making scrapbooks, cards, mixed media, jewelry, paintings of all kinds. I keep going but I think you get my drift. I just think that the younger generation at this time are to busy to do all this, there are exceptions of course. As they get older and have lived their lives they will start crafting as well I think, at least that is what I did. I hope it is around for a very long time or I will have wasted a lot I mean a lot of money on my wonderful crafts. I think if the cost was cheaper on some of these things that more people would be able to afford to do all the different kinds of crafts, I can not afford some of it myself.ReplyCancel

I don’t believe that crafting is a lost art, however, it’s not thriving as it once did. The ScrapMadeSimple channel owns a craft shop in CA. Wow thats a beautifull card and wow what a difficult quioston. Again sorry for my english. Well the answer is yes and no.. I only recieved handmake cards from my mother. By the way, saving the handwriting word….. I have handwrting letters from my grandfather and aunti. They wrote me when i was a child. Such a sweetness to keep them because i know its a personal thing. Emails and texting are not personal however it can contain personal messages. Hmmm somebody told me a year ago when i told i made handmade Christian cards for the church so they sold them and the money goes to our building, that nobody send cards anymore. I felt sad but still im selling cards in the church. People are to busy to make cards or simply don’t have the money for it. It can be a expensive hobby and we are still in crises here in Holland. But people like me still love to make cards because I know its something about you that you put in card you know? That you let the person how recieved youre card, knowing that you make time for them. Thats what i believe in handmade cards. Be blessed Bekka and i love youre cards.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Gorgeous card. Now is crafting a lost art…? Definitely not I’d say, I hear more and more people turning to one craft or another for way of relaxation, socializing, creating something handmade and precious or just for a hobby. I would say the crafting community is getting larger. Creating something of beauty is rewarding in itself, its personal, an achievement if you like. What could make it better? Products could be more economical and accessible, more available to those who need it and for it to be recognised as an art. There is no difference to me as seeing a painting that someone has taken a couple of hours to paint or a card that has taken someone 5 hours to make, they both mean something to the person who has created them, the time, thought and detail. I love photography and I can take quite some time achieving the photograph I would like, its not just clicking a camera, yet once at an exhibition that I was sharing with a painter no one was interested in even viewing my photographs because they did not consider them to be art! They saw it as just a click of a button rather than the hours spending getting the focus right, the lighting as well as the developing side of things, yes digital has taken away a lot of this but you still need that skill of how to take a photograph. I believe any craft can be called ART, it is a creation after all.

Sorry for the long essay lol! probably waffled on too much but hey?!!!

    Have a great weekend

    Love & Hugs

It’s such a treat having a gorgeous card to view each day – and potentially win! Thank you so much!
I sincerely trust that crafting never becomes a lost art. There is something inside many of us which just cries out to create. Perhaps crafting is not always ‘out of necessity’ as in former times, but has become a hobby for many. Encouraging people to be creative is a joy. In the group I run, members have said that they can lose themselves whilst making an item and then they have something to share with/show to/send to others. A handmade item shows the recipient that the sender has cared enough to give up precious time to make something special for them. I think that sharing your gifts as you do, Becca, encourages people to have a go at something that they might feel is beyond their capabilities or imagination. And that has a knock on effect, so blogs like yours are part of the movement to keep crafting very much alive!
    Hugs

I think crafting is always evolving because personal tastes change quickly. Years ago our ladies circles at Church had yearly craft fairs to raise mission money. We don’t do that now because it seemed people wanted to decorate with “store bought” items. Stamping and card making seem to have lasted the longest. Pinterest is changing crafts by supplying many diversified ideas.ReplyCancel

I don’t think crafting is a lost art. It would be nice though to have some more spare time in our busy lifestyle for it. I think crafting has been coming back since the start of recession. People starting getting back to crafting things to save money on gifts, etc. But they found that they enjoyed doing it, so now it continues. I am finding more younger people getting into it as well, especially knitting or crocheting. That’s something they can take with them to work on during commutes or during breaks at work. With so many people doing work on the computers I think they want to get away from it for relaxation.ReplyCancel

I dont think it is a lost art form because my nephew is basically growing up seeing me his aunty crafting, making cards, designing, decorating frames, making paper baby shoes, punching out shapes, using ribbon. He is watching me constantly and now at the tender age of two has asked for crafty things like punches and stamps. Hes not strong enough to use the punches independently so we do it together punch out shapes and stick them in his doodle pad. He loves stickers so he uses my crafty stuff out of ‘my special room’ as he likes to call my craft room. He likes to sit at my craft table and do gluing and sticking as he puts it. I recently have bought him some dinosaur stampers because he likes stamping too. I bought the childrens version of stampers which you just take the lid off and stamp the image onto the paper and hes loving it. He now can stamp, use punches, decorate using stickers, and glue cut out die cuts into his doodle pad. He enjoys crafting so much and im so pleased he has this creative interest. So i feel like if we instill the basics into our children then we can definately carry on with creating a crafty future for our children and making sure our crafting skills are not lost and will follow through to our future generations xReplyCancel

I think you have to get to the kids early. I know when I was younger and my daughter was young there was time for sports which she loves to do But when she visited my mom, she would teach her projects, like making a wreath. I try to do the same thing. Harder when the other grandma nor parents are not into crafts. So I guess you try to find time when you can with kids. I have tried to encourage some crafty women to get together at church to teach other women. It takes time to learn how things work, so it should be on going, not just once a year. You can’t expect that everyone can instantly learn. I figured out bows from you. :)ReplyCancel

I do not think crafting is a lost art, I think it’s an art form that has sky rocketed!!! I think with the world wide web, you can see any craft project you want to see, find all your materials you’ll need and even find wonderful tutorials on T-E-R-R-I-F-I-C blogs like yours, (along with Youtube).
Speaking from my perspective, I live in a rural Eastern WA town, we don’t have a craft store within 60 miles of us, so for me the web is the way to go. I also find that reading blogs is a way of connecting and relaxing, i’ve made a blog friend through on site, all because I won one of her prizes, she has been extremely helpful when I’ve asked questions, actually all the sites I’ve contacted have been wonderful!
I don’t think the craft world needs to be changed, I think it would be wonderful if our schools (nation wide) made ‘art’ a required class from K-12 grades, students need to know the basics of art and it is proven how relaxing and a stress reliever it is!!!!
I must say I am SO enjoying your blog and your daily questions, to be honest I hope you do something like this every year. I am having such a good time and your questions are very thought provoking!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. May Gods Grace be upon you.ReplyCancel

Unless paper disappears from our lives, I think paper crafting will be around. And if paper disappears, something else will appear to fill the void. I have friends who have taken up drawing, water coloring and knitting when they quit working. Blogs like yours are not only educational but also inspiring. I have trouble deciding which colors to use and seeing how you combine colors is helpful to me. I don’t think anything needs to be changed, younger people just need to put down their phones and not overschedule their kids so they are the time and energy to craft a bit together. Thanks for the beautiful card.ReplyCancel

    HI BECCA,
No I do not believe crafting is a lost art at all. One will only have to go to one Scrapbook Expo or CHA show and you will see the amount of “stuff” one comes away with from one of these shows and anyone would have to say it definitely is “alive” and sure “kickin’.” I know when all of my group goes we all spend no less than $200-$500. Some weeks I order dies in the amount of $50-100 just to be able to make a “Becca” card. And I don’t just mean cardmaking or scrapbooking. Visit a Michaels, JoAnns, Hobby Lobby or any other craft store and see what people are carrying out. While some can’t afford the expensive items such as machines, etc. our group makes cards for Shriners Hospital, nursing homes, etc. It gives your heart a happy feeling you are doing something nice for someone.
Card today is sure a beauty Becca. This is so much fun to answer your question each day and someday soon my name may be picked, I’m hoping.

I don’t think that crafting is a lost art. It is changing over time and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I do think that many people “crafted” in the past because they had to make their own things and that is no longer the case for many. I do think that it is up to us to pass these things down to our children and grandchildren. Not only the art and the “how to,” but also the appreciation. Crafting can bring so much joy; we need to make sure that we make time to share this with our kids.ReplyCancel

I take my 3, 6 year old, Grandson’s to craft classes all the time and they absolutely love, and are so proud of, whatever creations they make. When visiting they are always wanting to go up to my craft room to create. We have so much fun, even if it’s just adding some stickers onto cardstock and adding a drawing. They love being creative and I think most people do. Our oldest son is a carpenter; even that is a way to be creative and something to take pride in. I believe we all have a desire to be productive and creative. P.S. I also enjoy knitting in the car on plane trips, anywhere I know I’ll be sitting for a while. I think there will always be those of us who prefer to do things “our way”! Handcrafting assures us that we can make what we want – regardless of the medium involved. And the satisfaction of creating is delicious!ReplyCancel

Beautiful card. I don’t think crafting is a lost art. People are still creating and sharing their love of crafting. As long as we crafters share our joy in crafting it will never be lost. By doing this we make crafting better, because someone may pickup a new hobby that brings them joy. That is always good.ReplyCancel

Just love the beautiful card Becca, I would frame it ;and gaze at it often – if I were blessed enough to win it or indeed any of your oh so lovely cards.

Craft will never a lost art as so many people are still crafting
with such a variety of crafts. As long as parents and others teach and allow children to try their arty ideas it will live on.

Beautiful card, as usual, Becca! Definitely not a lost art as there are so many people involved in this craft of ours. I think it just gets better all the time with all the new products and people like yourself, who share their talents.ReplyCancel

  • MaryannJuly 12, 2015 - 12:08 am

I certainly don´t think, that craft is a lost art at all, and more and more younger people take it up again too. While neither my daughter or DIL´s have ever liked any crafting, then all my 7 granddaughters absolutely LOVE to do all kinds of crafting here with me, as soon as they get a chance. And they keeps on and on wanting to learn new things too, and like one here said earlier, just look at the craftshows, they´re filled to the brim with people, who like to learn about new things, techniques and products, but I do think, more of the younger crafters are more into digital crafting too thoug, but definitely also into ordinary crafting , where they learn to use their hands to create different things, they´ll like to have, and they also have lots of really great ideas too, so no I´m not at all worried about crafting getting a lost art.ReplyCancel

Once again, a very pretty card. I really like the doily effect.
Crafting is still going strong, I think. I have been to two weddings in the past six months, and the brides really did a great job creating many crafty ideas for their big day. It saved them money and gave them great pride for all their efforts.ReplyCancel

No, I don’t think crafting is a lost art. I think that technology has, and could make it better. Thank you for the chance to win!ReplyCancel

  • RonnyJuly 12, 2015 - 12:53 am

I think there are more people than ever crafting and the crafting technology is growing by leaps and bounds. When I started making cards I was thinking I could make them so much cheaper than buying them and I look back over the ten years I have been cardmaking etc and my how how the products have changed. Problem is there is so many new things all the time that I always want so now I have a fortune tied up in my crafting supplies. YIKES! There are So many on line stores, so many people I know are crafting, so many crafting blogs and youtube tutorials that I think it is growing not fading away. But on the other hand most all the stores around us that were so great and carried everything you wanted have all closed, Now even in our fairly big city about the only thing left is Michaels and JoAnns and they don’t carry a lot of brands so you have to buy on line now and the shipping sometimes ends up being more expensive than the product you want. Also all the craft and card making books have disappeared from the stores. The best craft books come from the UK and they are always very expensive and we only see them when they are already a couple of months old. So in a nutshell, I think more people of all ages are crafting but on the other hand all the stores are disappearing. I guess its cheaper not to have a brick and morter store but I don’t see prices any better because they are on line. Maybe someone that has had a store can give us and answer to that. So as more people than ever are crafting why are all the stores closing???ReplyCancel

Here, where I live in New Zealand, as in many countries, the pace of life is such, and also the pressure to earn, that many cannot take the time to indulge in handicrafts. BUT what is a growing trend is that older women are now starting hobbies that have been denied them previously. The main thing is to keep going and making sure people are exposed to them

I definitely thing art is becoming a lost art. Too many people these days just want electronic everything. I still love doing homemade crafts and I know my family love receiving them but I think the up coming generation will phase them out to a certain degree cause they want the electronic stuff.ReplyCancel

This card is so fabulous. I’m hoping I’ll be blessed to win it but whoever does will be receiving something very special.
I think crafting and creating things by hand is here to stay. Technology may make certain parts of handmade creativity easier but the desire to create something from our hearts and with our hands is what makes us human. It’s a wonderful blessing gifted to us by God, whether someone is creating a card, sweater, building a kite with their children or any of the millions of handmade items. Crafting is here to stay.ReplyCancel

  • MarilynYJuly 12, 2015 - 6:07 am

I don’t believe crafting is a lost art yet but it’s definitely not as prominent as it used to be. Instant art and clothes purchases so easily conveniently nearby and every kind of toy or gadget easily accessible……there’s no need to make your own. A reflection of the times is the number of craft stores in your neighborhood. But like H. Clinton said….’it takes a village’……yes, education and exposure to crafting starts at home and school. A simple crochet lesson or drawing or decoupage or embroidery could open up the door to other talents and build from there. It’s up to you and me and everybody else to share your talent to young and old to perpetuate crafting for tomorrow.ReplyCancel

Good morning Becca. The reason I craft is because I really enjoy doing the cards. It is relaxing for me and it also challenges me. It is fun to see different designs on the web and incorporate them into my cards. Everyone is a teacher and I learn so much. Thank you for teaching me Becca. God Bless!ReplyCancel

  • F BondJuly 12, 2015 - 9:10 am

I don’t think crafting is a lost art. I find that a lot of people start crafting because of their budgets. They can’t afford something they have seen and try their hand at making one. The one thing that could make it better for me is access to supplies. You can see things online and in videos, but most times I need to see items in person to see if it works for me. You would think that a city like Savannah, Ga would have a papercrafting/ scrapbooking store. And sad to say no papercrafting/ stamping shows come to the area. Strange also because their is a huge art college here. There were stores here years ago but the only reason they closed were due to marriages and kids, etc. Not to lack of business. How sad!ReplyCancel

  • Cyndy WJuly 12, 2015 - 4:32 pm

Beautiful card Becca! Crafting is not a lost art, however, it is something that needs to be cultivated in younger generations. There are so many gadgets that scream for our attention, we as current “crafters” need to introduce crafting and the pleasures it brings to the generations that follow us. If we do not do that then sadly, crafting may slip away in the future.ReplyCancel

  • dorothy harrisonJuly 12, 2015 - 4:52 pm

Crafting will never die! I attend a lot of crafts fairs – people creating and selling, and it’s obvious that there are many who both love to craft, and many who love to buy those items! Just look at Pintrest and you’ll spend hours enjoying the works of so many! And Becca, while you and we live, you know we will never stop!ReplyCancel

  • DesireeJuly 16, 2015 - 10:45 am

I don’t think crafting is a lost art. Maybe it’s become more rare, but I believe as long as there are parents that encourage creativity there will be children who continue to do it. I think some of it is becoming more digital and less traditional, but I don’t think it’s disappearing. Maybe we could say it’s becoming redefined!ReplyCancel

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Saving the Written Word

If you’re not familiar with 30 Days of Giving and how you can receive this card,  read about it HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by looking under the Features menu item and selecting Giveaway Winners.

Good morning and Happy Friday.  If you’ve been peeking in for the last 10 days, you know that I’m taking this month to gush over the hand written word and the old fashioned ways of keeping great memories with pictures, actual notecards and letters and the gift of giving handmade.  I’m always concerned that so much of our treasure lives in our computers in the way of family pictures and heartfelt words spoken in emails.  I know that what we’re all feeling in our hearts is confirmed on a daily basis.  On Wednesday as Wall Street shut down and United Airlines had to ground all their flights because none of that stuff can ever be done manually – a little glitch brought those enterprises to their knees.  It reminds me of when I pressed youngest daughter to hone up on her math skills in case she got a part time job running a cash register.  She huffed at me and told me my worry was insane because the cash registers take care of everything themselves . . .

For today’s comment –  Is there anything you do the old fashioned way instead of relying on a machine to do it?

The card that’s being given away today is shown above.  Just a note – this is a card that has been shown before and there is a possibility that some of the supplies that were used are currently discontinued, no doubt there will be something you can substitute – have a look through my galleries for alternative ideas.  Many things can still be found on the open market, just google and you’ll find that many retailers are still selling.

Wow, love this card today. I adore all the different dies used and the colors are great, I love purple but it is a color that can not be used as well like some of the others. Just Gorgeous!
Your question is a hard one today, technology is every where these days so you do not get to do a lot of things without some part of it being used. I guess my only thing I still do is kinda like what you wanted your daughter to do. Math has always been my best subject, I still to this day will figure it out in my head. I can add, subtract, multiply and divide in my head quicker than most of my friends or co-workers can on a calculator. I am still amazed by the number of people younger and older than I that can not do it in their head. Don’t get me wrong there are times I need that calculator for larger numbers but for the most part I can do it without it.ReplyCancel

  • Anna HJuly 10, 2015 - 7:30 am

My whole life is anti-tech or low tech. I don’t own a cell phone, which makes me a dinosaur. My husband just bought a new TV and tried to show me how to use it…well after Step 4 of 25 steps he lost me. I don’t need surround sound, a sub woofer, a tuner or all of the other equipment he has, just let me push the On/Off button.
When I got my first job 25 years ago I worked for a very stingy and miser of a man. He would not let his employees use the cash register to ring up purchases because it wasted register tape…So we had to add all purchases plus taxes in our head and use the register only for end totals. To this day it amazes my friends when I do this when I shop at the grocery store.ReplyCancel

Super card, Becca! Love the lattice background!

Having worked for 45 years in the accounting field, before and after computers, I am fairly saavy in that regard, but I still use detailing the old style when analyzing, doing bank statements and anything that has to do with money. I guess I was so used to audits that I always learned that you left a paper trail and never had a problem. Also learning the Palmer method of handwriting, still write clearly so anyone can read your handwriting. My mother always drummed that into my head “to write large enough and clear enough so anyone could read it. So I still have a good handwriting.

My colors Becca, anything purple gets my attention and it’s not that old ladies wear purple as I was told as a little girl by my sweet grandmother and mom. They just didn’t know how crazy I was going to get when I reach 70 in October, lol.
Yes there is one thing that I do not rely on is writing notes to myself to remember things, I have a stash on my table and bed, you see it seems like I always remember things that I need to do or get is when I get in bed. So I keep a pad of paper (bright colors that I found at the $tree) and a pen to jot things down. One thing to remember is to always tear the page off, or you might just write over it and then in the morning you are trying to see what you had written, sometimes a big mess.

What a beautiful card. I love the sweet lavender heart and the gorgeous lattice background. I thought I was the only one in the world without a dishwasher – glad to see I’m not. While washing dishes isn’t my favorite chore, I do enjoy it when I’m cleaning out my hutch and getting my pretties shiny and sparkly again.ReplyCancel

As usual beautiful card Becca!! I still iron my own clothes, read real books, make most of my food from scratch, and walk if it is a reasonable distance. I really think I was born a hundred years to late. Even with all the hardships, I would have loved to live in the late 1800’s.ReplyCancel

Lively card today, Becca. Love the layering you did with the different dies! I do a lot of fussy cutting instead of using dies to cut out flowers, especially. I love to cut flowers and layer them on top of each other for a 3D effect. Don’t see much of that effect anymore. Thx for the chance to win this beautiful card!ReplyCancel

  • JessicaJuly 10, 2015 - 9:39 am

Again…gorgeous! I tend go go to a template, before breaking out a machine. I don’t do much fussy cutting. But if it’s straight forward shapes, I cut it out myself. Thanks, this has been fun.ReplyCancel

First thing that springs to mind is books. I can see the advantage of an e-reader for holidays, but I love the feel and smell of a bona fide book. I don’t have a dish washer so that’s certainly old fashioned! I do all my baking from scratch and never use box mixes. The same with sauces in cooking -make my own not packets. I’m sure there are loads of other things. But I’m not a dinosaur. I couldn’t do without my computer – but there are times when I could cheerfully do without my mobile phone! Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

Oooo…Beautiful card Becca and you created with my favorite color. So delicate!! Becca its so sad that we depend so much on machines to do almost everything. I still like to hang my clothes out to dry and yes I do have a dryer but its so nice to be able to smell fresh clothes. I also have a dishwasher I do my dishes by hand–trying to conserve our precious water. I have to confess I do like the fact that I get to see your blog-HA! yes on my computer. But I think its worth it!!!!! THANKS!ReplyCancel

  • NancyRJuly 10, 2015 - 9:59 am

Love this! Purple is my absolute favorite color. Just painted my craft room purple.

The one thing that I do by hand is make lemonade. I happen to like the pulp in it, so I have a couple of the old fashioned glass lemon juicers that you press and twist the lemons on it by hand. I also do calculations in my head. A girl I was working with one time was amazed that I could do that…..needless to say she was quite a bit younger.ReplyCancel

Love this card and the locket and the colors.
I still prefer to read a book and go to the library often. My husband likes his kindle, but I like a book in my hand. Sometimes I will just fussy cut things rather than getting out my Silhouette or Cricut. As for dishwashing yes, must have that dishwasher, I would rather be in my craft room playing than standing washing dishes. Getting lazy in my old age, so again standing and chopping and making from scratch isn’t what I call fun anymore. Although I most always make cakes, desserts from scratch and I do love casserols. Thank goodness my husband likes to cook and experiment. Have at it I say, I’m off to my craft room!ReplyCancel

WOW. I love that card with all those different dies and the purple accents. One of my favorite quotes. What do I still do the old fashioned way? I make rye bread from scratch, kneading it myself (not in a bread machine) every two weeks. It was the best way to make a healthy vegetarian bread that I could eat daily and I still can my own fruits and vegetables every summer, make my own jam and bake from scratch. With family members who have allergies, celiac disease and are vegetarian/vegan it is the easiest way to sure everyone can eat what I cook.ReplyCancel

Oh wow! Another beautiful card! Though I love the wonders of technology, I still prefer many things “the old-fashioned way”. Cooking “from scratch”, handmade cards and notes. We also grow our own vegetables – love the freshness of picking my own veges. And then, like someone else said, I also prefer taking my actual Bible to church. The traditional family is very important to me: husbands and wives fulfilling different roles yet together forming a loving unit seeking to raise the children they have been entrusted with in an atmosphere of mutual love and respect (an ideal we strive towards, though we always fall short :).ReplyCancel

Every summer, I harvest tomatoes, and I always plant more than I can eat. I share with neighbors including the adult foster care folks in front of me…also my corn sweet peppers, squash, eggplant, herbs etc. then I buy boxes of seconds on ‘maters, and start roasting almost all the above veggies. (The boys never realize how much eggplant they’ve eaten, snicker). Once roasted along with onion and garlic, they go in my big pot, and they start slow and low with lots of fresh herbs and spices. And they cook and cook, and season a little more and cook some more, until hours later, out comes the stick blender and in a few moments, I have the most delicious sauce ever. Do that for a few days, and I have a loads of sauce in the freezer for whatever Italian dishes I want to cook in the next year. Then a do a few days of plain sauce…add in chopped bell peppers of every color, onions, garlic, meatloaf type spices, and I will have basic sauce for stews and soups for the year. Then on to put up creamed and regular corn, and whatever other veggies are left, a couple boxes of apples for sauce and apple butter, and then we are ready for the winter! Always better homemade.

Again, Becca, what a lovely way to share all we are grateful for, and all we have received and can share. Making my recovery and “slow” summer the best it can be.

Yet another amazing card! Very thought provoking question today. The more that I think about it, the more I realize that I am a dinosaur! I still wash dishes by hand and then put them in the dishwasher. I have never read a book or newspaper via technology, preferring the “real thing” in my hands. I write handwritten lists for grocery shopping and ” to do” items. I use paper and pencil calendars. I am amazed that almost no one seems capable of counting back change correctly. I do most of my shopping in brick and mortar stores. Of course, I prefer to visit my local scrapbook store in person. This could be a rather long list! Have a great weekend.ReplyCancel

Another extraordinary card Becca! Love, love, love all the purple and layers of dies, just my style! One of the things that I do manually is pay most of my bills by check, along with items that I purchase in the stores. I keep thinking that people in line with me at the grocery stores, etc. must think that I’m old fashion because I DO write out checks instead of sliding a credit card into the card reader.ReplyCancel

Another lovely card Becca, love the way you layer it up and the lilac is gorgeous. I dont possess a dish washer or tumble dryer so do all that by hand, washing always gets hung outside weather permitting. For me reading a book is a multisensory thing. The touch and smell, especially of old books the different textures of paper, love it all. I write out poems or sayings that have touched me. And these will be found amongst my bank reconciliations and shopping lists. I prepare and cook all meals from start to finish. All my cards are handmade and i confess to love handsweeping with a broom, very therapeutic oh and mowing the lawn too.ReplyCancel

Well, I sure did have to think about my answer to your question today! That’s a tough one. The only thing I can come up with is that I bake bread the old-fashioned way. No bread machine here! I love baking my Mamaw’s bread! We loved it as children and I’m so thankful that I wrote down the recipe! I actually had to ask her to measure everything once and I stood there writing it down. I have a Nook. I love it, but I still read a lot of paper books. There is something really wonderful about the feel of a book in your hands, turning the pages, feeling the texture of the paper. • Sandy HaysJuly 10, 2015 - 12:47 pm

Well the comment today really has me thinking… My husband reads all the news online, but I still have the newspaper delivered. There’s just something about sitting down with the paper, opening it up, trying to keep it propped up, and reading it. He has also gone to a Kindle book reader. No thank you. I have to have the book, turn the pages, and be able to flip back when I want to. It’s pretty sad to think of these two things as old fashioned, but it seems to be the way of things anymore.ReplyCancel

    • Sandi SmithJuly 10, 2015 - 6:25 pm

Another truly lovely card! Every one you create is extraordinarily beautiful.
My household is a mix of old fashioned ways and modern technology. My husband doesn’t do computers. Not at all so I do everything computer related. My husband doesn’t like cell phones and has the most basic phone available. He doesn’t take pictures or receive texts. No Internet either. I love books and have many but I also own a Nook. It’s convenient for traveling and easy to read while in the car. Having a broken shoulder recently that required surgery after the bone healed, would have made reading almost impossible without my Nook. Even though I have more dies and die cutting machines, I still love reverse printing a sentiment or layout title and fussy cutting it out. I enjoy fussy cutting embellishments plus I hand make almost all my flowers. That’s my favorite part of card making. Life is definitely a mix in this time of technology.ReplyCancel

I don’t like using a gps so I would rather a map book when I drive. I don’t use a calculator for multiplication & I would rather grow my own fresh herbs, than buy them dried in a jar.ReplyCancel

    Hi, Becca,
I love the die-cutting on this card and look forward to having a machine one day. There are some things that don’t work as well by hand!

The sentiment on many of my cards are hand written. It may take more time but allows me to have freedom of expression; size, style, and verbiage. I worked in a gift store that had a computer-driven calligraphy machine. Amazing machine and definitely superior if one is doing a lot of copies of text. The fact that a machine was invented to do this work (simulating handwriting) speaks to the value of the hand written word.

    Love & blessings,
    SandyReplyCancel

Very pretty card, but they all are! One thing I do is still wash some things by hand. Some things just are better the old way. Also, I mash potatoes with an old fashion hand held masher. I like the texture! Blessings, LisaReplyCancel

Becca you are spot on! Every now and then I run a diagnostic I my head to ensure I have all the updated family info so it isn’t lost! Mostly I worry about family history that I have gathered and written down for my daughter and grandsons. I did join Ancestry.com but that just lists the relatives and branches of the family members. That does not include the anticdotal and funny stories that any family member should treasure. Since my mother passed away and lately my closest cousin, there is no one left to insure the family history stays alive, so here I am to the tune of “pick me coach”, plodding away trying to organize, sort and file everything I know about “us”. I also have become the keeper of large plastic tubs full of old photos dating back to the 1890’s. God bless my mother, she was the historian before me and kept EVERYTHING. So now there photos, dishes and even the dress, hat and shoes my great-great-grandmother worn to the funeral of my great-great-grandfather. It also includes the photo of the funeral party with her in that beautiful black satin dress. It’s uncanny and sometimes eerie to feel the fabric and know apart of that dress is apart of me Ina way. Thanks, Becca, for always reminding us of the truly important things and translating them into your own beautiful artwork. I always feel a tad closer to others that can relate to the ideas that come from those creative hands of yours. May God and all of our ancestors bless and keep you, dear heart. I guess I’m just an old fashioned girl and I like to be kind to the environment. I don’t have a dishwasher or want one, so everything is washed by hand. I also use a hand can opener.

I don’t know if you have garage sales, but that’s a good reason to know how to make change. I like to have figured it out in my head to make sure the cashier and the register got it right.ReplyCancel

My mother and husband used to say I was a hoarder before that word became en vogue. I envisioned many house cleaning products of ‘old’ being discontinued for better/newer/upgraded products . So I have a small collection of things such as laundry bluing that I swear does a better job of cleaning white clothes than today’s washing machine can do on it’s white cycle. So I still hand wash a white batch of clothes using the bluing agent and they sure looker whiter than the batch out of the washer that used clorox. I guess I’m stuck in a time warp. lol.ReplyCancel

Hmmm by hand? I love to chop vegetables – and only use the food processor for shredding major jobs – other than that it’s chop and slice! Chopping nuts in an old wooden bowl with a double chopper – more control and less to clean up. I use my dishwasher when it’s a big group but for just one – it’s in the sink. It warms me in the winter and helps is good hand exercise! And like others – when summer comes the clothes are out on the line – they smell fresh and clean without using chemicals!
Your card is beautiful – I love the subtle use of lavender in the background and as usual – you have such a eye for design!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, This card is stunning, I love all the die-cuts you have used, and in my favourite colours too, stunning !!
I don’t have a dishwasher, all my dishes are done by hand, mainly by my hubby (he washes, and I dry haha), I can’t think of anything else apart from hanging my washing outside on a long clothes line and a couple of props to lift the line higher, but that is only in the Summer, in the Winter I use the dryer. I also have a breadmaker, but tend to make by hand because I don’t like the hole in the bottom of the loaf that the paddle makes haha.
Lots of love from Patricia xxReplyCancel

If you’re not familiar with 30 Days of Giving and how you can receive this card,  read about it HERE.  You can check to see if you’ve won a card by looking under the Features menu item and selecting Giveaway Winners.

Good morning sweet friends!  As always thanks for stopping by.  Today I’ll be brief because I want to get the giveaway card up.  Lol, this is just a small dent in the stash, but I’m so glad these cards are going on to good homes, good causes :-)

For today’s comment –  was wondering, how many cards do you make a week?    No shame, not everyone cranks out cards – sometimes I’m a bystander myself.

My average is 1 card per week. However, I do go in spurts because I need to make so many cards for all of my family and friends; probably a minimum of 12 to a maximum of 28 of each card. Since I make many cards at once, I will first complete the preparation work so all of my pieces are available (die cuts, card frames, ribbons, pearls, flowers, etc.). The assembly begins after the prep work is done. Finally, I package the sets and send out to friends and relatives. Sometimes the set is for a holiday or birthday, many times it is just for fun. Everyone loves to send the beautiful cards to their friends and relatives. It is a ripple of caring messages that started with you Becca!!!!ReplyCancel

Some weeks I will make 6 or more, depends how detailed they are. I meet every week with three other card makes so that get me making a lot , some times we help each other with designs.

How many cards in a week? A few weeks ago I made a dozen sympathy cards because those are always needed in an adult community. Then it took me a week to make a spinner card & decorate a picture frame for my great-nephew who turned one, and an engagement congratulations. In one of our classes last week, we made a water card, which I finished. That’s pretty much the last month! Hah! Not much activity for me. Maybe I will be motivated soon!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca first thank you for all you share and for this amazing 30 day where we can comment on our personal thoughts. I have to say that I have not made too many cards lately I have made about 5 in the past weeks. Either thank you-birthday or for a special gift for my first rag quilt for my son and daughter in law. I am working on making a few 3X3 cards to put in a purse bag I made. Its going to be given to my quilt teacher for her hard work in teaching quilting to a beginner. Just something handmade is so much fun and great therapy. Have a good day.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

I’m afraid I’m in the occasional cardmaker category, but not wanting to be there. I absolutely LOVE losing myself in the process of making a card, and then seeing how it all turns out in the end too. I’d like to make a minimum of a card a week, that’s my goal–I live with severe health issues, so that isn’t always possible, but it’s a goal. My other crafting-type goals–to start a blog, and I’d love to start a service where card-makers would send a package of cards tailored to missionary families, especially those living in remote areas and/or where buying cards in English would be difficult. That way for birthdays and other occasions, there would be special, handmade cards for each family member to receive from their family, etc. I think that making cards for troops is EXCEPTIONAl, love it! I was just thinking it would also be amazing if we made handmade cards for God’s soldiers who go out and minister in faraway places in His name. Someday…

Blessings, I love this friendship card! You can never have too many of those to send out… :)

Hi Becca, another beautiful card for us today. My card making depends on the month and also my health and schedule. I am trying to get a head start on busy months so am working on November/December birthdays at the moment so I can start on Christmas cards early this year. I have found that sometimes when I have a design that I love, I make 2 or 3 of that design if there won’t be any crossovers with the recipients. This has helped a great deal as I like to take my time in designing and try to make it specific to the person receiving it.ReplyCancel

Wonderful sentiment on today’s card Becca. I spent some time in my craft room every day since I retired. However, not always making a card. Sometimes it’s practicing techniques etc. I do try to make two or three a week. Sometimes if there are lots of birthdays, anniversaries etc it is more. Unfortunately life does tend to get in the way at times, such as right at this moment, and it is fewer. I tend to make my Christmas cards throughout the year so I don’t have a mad flurry and panic when I realise how close it is! Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

I tend to have “sessions” when I make lots of cards sometimes up to three months ahead. I go away a lot and I make sure that I have all my greetings cards done well before I leave and make the cards needed for a few weeks after I get back. My dedicated craft room is so crammed with materials and tools that there’s no room for me to sit in there to work, so I take over the dining room for about two weeks at a time and we eat in our kitchen/diner. Hi Becca!
I am always amazed how how gorgeous you laying is! I can not seem to get the knack for it.
I would LOVE if you did a “how to” VIDEO series on your thought process and how you come up with not only your layer choices but also your color choices. I notice that you do a lot of monochromatic choices. Yours are jaw dropping gorgeous and mine…well…not so much!

I was forced to return to the work force after 19.5 years of being a homemaker. (health insurance premiums when through the roof and consume 90% of our entire household expenses.) It has been EXTREMELY hard on me especially emotionally b/c I have been thrown into a technology world where I don’t belong. ANYHOW, I unfortunately average approx. .0001 cards a week. Lack of time is a factor and I do not have a craft room so I have to work on my dining table, coffee table or in most cases on the floor in my living room.

Still having so much fun answering these questions. During my busy seasons – summer, fall, early winter, I try to make one new design a week (16-24 of each), fill in what is low, so that I have 16 of each, and try – doesn’t always happen – to make a holiday design a week – 16 – 24 of each. Since I carry a pretty full line of cards, this is a hectic time! I also fill any special orders, make any family cards I need, etc. At the end of my season, I donate cards and supplies to organizations that can use them, put the rest of my inventory away to add to over the winter and get ready for Easter and Mother’s Day and the start of a new season!

Of course, when you break an ankle on the 3rd of July and need surgery, it sort of messes with the “plans”, so here we are. Having days of gratitude and thanksgiving. Thanks, Becca :)ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, Another stunning card, loving the colours and the embellishment and that gorgeous bow.
To be honest I only make cards for my own family for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Births etc, so it depends on when these fall, this month I have three to make and I am half way through, it takes me a long time to ‘decide’ what to create, and even then, sometimes it doesn’t turn out how I would like, so then I have to start again. My second one this month was like that, it it for my Granddaughter’s 30th Birthday, I got three quarters the way through it and decided that I didn’t like it, so I have started again, then when I have finished that one, I have an 18th card to make for my youngest Granddaughter. I do tend to make more cards in the Winter, in the Summer I tend to do lots of gardening.
Lots of love from Patricia xxReplyCancel

I don’t have any set number of cards to make each month. The number I make depends on how many birthdays, wedding anniversaries, new baby, thinking of you, thank you, get well and sympathy occassions that come up that I want to acknowledge. This summer has been a busy one for me. In June, I made twenty-one cards and sent out. In July, so far, I have made and sent out seven birthday cards, two wedding anniversary cards, one thank you card, three new baby and two get well cards. Becca your card is just beautiful again this morning and like the dies you have used. I would make at the least 3 cards a week but could be up to 6 depending on what is happening and who I am with. Sometimes my craft girls just want to chat.

Beautiful card you have up today! Love that big pink bow! I really don’t make a set number of cards per week. I’m mainly driven by need when a birthday, holiday, etc comes up. I’m also trying to finish a scrapbook for daughter #1 so I can start one for daughter #2! I’d much rather be making cards though!ReplyCancel

    Hi, Becca,
I love the stamp used on this card!

Like many of those who commented, my card making runs hot and cold. Sometimes I make cards for particular people but I have had several people ask me if I have cards to sell so I have been working on an inventory. On average, I make about 5 cards per week. Not prolific – but consistent.

When I look for the giveaway winners, my system only shows to Day 6.

    Love & blessings,

All your cards are so gorgeous.
I used to make at least 1 card a day but now I work in fits and starts. As I lead a class, I always have to make at least 2 samples a week on top of the cards I make for family and friends. The prospect of a charity fundraiser 3 weeks ago resulted in a frenzy of cardmaking and I produced 24 in 2 days. Christmas means I need to make several hundred at a time so that I have packs of 5, 6, 10 and 12 to sell for fundraising.

Hi Becca, absolutely love this card – as I do for all your cards. I would have to say I make between 3-5 cards a week, all depends on the requests I get from my co – workers. Sometimes I can do as many as 4-5 just on a weekend. Christmas time I make a lot so maybe I would say between 8-10 a week at that time of year.ReplyCancel

Hmm I make a few cards in a week. I go to a group of ladies and we share card making. There are 4 of us. We each make a card and take turns to show and make each others cards up. So that is 4. But I have just started teaching a ladies in the village where I live how to make cards, and she has 3 kits to make with my help and 1 kit to take home. So that makes another 4, as you need a tactile sample to them to see.
I then make other special cards depending on the time of year.
So at a minimum it would have to be 8 cards.
I just love your cards Becca. And have followed your blog for years and it always causes me to sigh and tugs at my heart when I see your cards and other items you make.

My card making time is mostly determined by the weather. During the Fall, I get a total itch to spend time in my craft room. During the summer… not so much. When it’s rainy and cold, I can really crank out the cards. So for an answer, summertime is zilch and cooler time is 1 or 2 a day.ReplyCancel

I love today’s card Becca, especially the sentiment, it speaks from the heart. I make cards as needed, so I look at my calendar and it will tell me whose birthday or anniversary is coming up and I stamp accordingly. If I really like a card that I’ve just made, I get all excited and can’t wait to replicate it, so I usually start another card as soon as that one is completed. I try to have a few Thank You and Sympathy cards made in advance, so sometimes I’m just spending the day cranking out some of those.ReplyCancel

On average, I make 1-2 cards a week. Really depends on the season. I tend to make more Birthday cards in January, June and July as most of the family birthdays fall in those months. I make lots of Valentine’s in Feb, Easter cards in Mar/Apr. and of course I start my Christmas cards in Oct/Nov. The others are more random. I always enjoy starting my day when possible with your posts Becca, your cards are always an inspiration. Thanks.

Very pretty card. I hate that Justrite no longer has a web site to purchase their stamps and dies. They have such gorgeous stamps and dies. It depends on birthday, anniversaries, illness, etc. This past week I have made 3 cards, 2 anniversaries and one birthday. Next week, I only have my grandson’s birthday card to make. He’s into robots to I’ll have to come up with something along that line. Any ideas?ReplyCancel

I always have the greatest of intentions to send people birthday cards, anniversary cards, etc. but somehow I never get my act together early enough to get cards made (because I’d also have to clear off my desk, and that would take a fair bit of time!) ‘sigh’

However, I did make one of your cards for one friend of mine who faithfully makes cards for my husband and I, and I decided I HAD to make the card no matter what! It took me a very long time to make, because I had to keep watching/re-watching your video to know what to do next, but I did get it finished and she got it on her actual birthday.

I then made another card for a relative and she got it on time too – only problem was I started making it for their anniversary, but didn’t get it finished, so her birthday was only a little while later, so she got it then, and she didn’t know any difference, and they were thrilled with the card. It depends on how many occasions occur in the month. Summer months are always the busiest. I usually make 5-7 cards a week and on special occasions, like 4th of July, I make 15. All the same so it goes quickly. Work schedule and home chores cuts into the available time to make them.ReplyCancel

The number of cards I make in a week varies. It depends on what I need. I make all of the cards I send and occasionally sell a few. Some weeks I may be too busy to make any. Other times I may make half a dozen in one day. One year I tried to make a card every day for a year. I only got 302 done but I felt pretty good about that since I never make anything simple or quick.ReplyCancel

I love this card and its beautiful pink bow! I’m sorry to have to admit that I haven’t been able to create cards in six months. On Jan. 6, 2015, I fell in the shower while hospitalized for pneumonia. I fractured my pelvis in three places plus I broke my shoulder. After the broken bones healed, we discovered I had more damage than the fractures. On June 4, 2015, I had surgery to repair my shoulder so now i have another two months of recovery before I will be using my arm normally. It will be about 9 months with physical therapy and no crafting. I really miss being creative. We also recently discovered that I damaged nerves in my back. As a result, I’m using a wheelchair. Short of God’s intervention, and I believe that can and does happen, I will be using the wheelchair to craft as we wait to see if the nerves recover. I should know in another year whether the damage is permanent. While this has been extremely painful and emotionally difficult, it is blogs like yours that keep me inspired and helps me hang onto the hope that i will craft cards again.ReplyCancel

Major holidays other than Christmas about 15 each – Valentines, St. Pat.’s, Easter, Halloween & Thanksgiving. For Christmas I send out 30-40 cards with a form letter and at least a personal note added to about 1/3 of those, plus I make next year calendars for about 25 lady friends for Christmas gifts.ReplyCancel

Call me old fashion, but I still do a lot the old fashion way. I cook regular meals not take out, I still bake homemade instead of buying from bakery, I sew and love to design window dressing, bedding etc., and even though we have all have cell phones, I have a land line with several hand sets throughout the house so I don’t have to carry my cell with me from room to room (Have a fairly large home and could not hear the phone if I did not have several hand sets. I still prefer to take my pictures with an SLR which gives me better quality pics then any cell phone or i-pad and although I store and work with them on my computer and back them up, I also always send them out to get a hard copy made as well. Like to make homemade cards instead of store bought. And although I have and use my dishwasher, I still believe in washing my dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. Like I have always said to my kids, their isn’t a little guy that comes out in the washing cycle to scrub the pots and pans and remove the food residue from the dishes. Besides those food particles have to go somewhere, and just get trapped and eventually clog your the dishwasher drain. Yuck. But I think it is a great way to sterilize and dry your dishes.ReplyCancel
