Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Spellbinders Butterflies
Well friends, I still have 20 clear cases to give away – the winner did not come forward to claim their prize.  If you’re not familiar with these lovely cases,  here’s the post where you can check them out:  My Clear Case Storage.  Leave a comment on this post, using Random.org I’ll pick and post a winner on Tuesday, May 27th.   I’ll repeat the rules at the bottom of my post.  In the meantime I have a card to share that simply made me smile when I worked on it.  The pieces and parts of this card have been laying on my counter for about a week and every day I’d glitter something or wet something to move me along to the end.  This week has been quite a phone week so I snipped the butterflies out of one full die cut sheet while I was chatting.  Today while I was waiting for my computer to copy some files, I finished it up.  I’ve had this idea to float these sweet butterflies using Spellbinders Butterflies since it came out.  I love it when something turns out like you hope it will.
WRBF-4298-2014
The entire card is made of watercolor paper.  For the die cut layer I simply used a wet paint brush and swished color from a diluted re-inker across in pink, purple and blue.  After dry, I ran through die cutter.  I made another panel slightly bigger than the die cut layer.  I did the same wash but this time I used only pink and once dried, I stamped a print across.  This panel fits right behind my butterflies die cut.  Then I die cut one more layer of butterflies out of paper I washed with pink.  I sprayed adhesive on and covered with glitter.  As you can see, the butterflies are connected together – I simply snipped in between each butterfly to release it.  After folding each Butterfly in half, I hot glued them right over the outlines of butterflies on my die cut sheet then put a smidgen of hot glue on the back of two pearls I popped into the middle of each butterfly.
WRBF-4299-2014
The last thing I did was attached a bow that was hand dyed using the same re-inker I used for the pink washes.  Oh, and the cutest little tag ever came from Spellbinders Back to Basic Tags.  I stamped a little saying on it from Wordworth Stamps.  So tiny and so cute!!

CRAFT SUPPLIES I USED

So again, I’d love to see these cases go to a winner!  Here are the rerun of the rules:

What You Can Win:

In order to win, leave a comment on this post before Tuesday, May 27th at noon CST.  You are allowed to leave one comment per day.  The name will be be picked by comment number through random.org and  I’ll post the name of the winner on  Tuesday May 27th (please check back) and the winner has to claim their prize with 48 hours by responding with their address through my contact tab at the top right hand of the blog.  I’ll forward the address on to TapeOnline for shipping directly to the winner.  The clear cases are offered only for domestic US Shipping because for international guests, the shipping exceeds the cost of the cases HOWEVER, if you are one of my sweet international guests, I’ll offer an alternate prize of stamps and paper that I’ll take care of shipping.  Hopefully the second time will be the charm!!

Question Parking Lot:

Let me know if you have any questions about the card!

1.  Julie Blake, comment #32 asked where to get the ribbon I used for the card above. Julie it is white silk ribbon that is 1.25″ in width and I dunked it in a small cup with several drops of Ranger Industries Victorian Velvet Re-inker.   May Arts has a list of retailers HERE.

2.  Kathleen Kelley, comment #249 and Marge, comment #312 and asked respectively,  (a) How do you get them in the mail? Most of my cards are mailed and would be squashed? and (b) One question, if you were mailing this card how could you prevent the butterflies from going flat?  Thanks for the question ladies, this is the top asked question on my blog and I thought it best to show you .  I used to buy the kraft bubble mailers but found them to be quite pricey, so I get these Cardboard DVD Mailers for quite a bit less.  There’s ample room for bow and my butterflies won’t get smushed :-)

Love this card – so pretty but a friend of mine is terrified of butterflies so it would be no good for her bday say! Wondered if I could ask your advice on something Becca- A4 card storage – what’s the best way to store this? I have built a collection of various colours and types (plain and patterned) and it’s on a shelf of a bookcase, most in its original packaging comprising of cardboard boxes and clear plastic wrap but am finding I dont really know what I’ve got! Was thinking of getting it out of the packaging and filing it flat in a drawer unit in colours – plains together and patterns together within each drawer/colour. I am hoping this would make it more accessible and I could easily see what I have – but it’s alot of effort to sort if it doesn’t! Hence your advice please would be welcomed. How do you store yours I wonder?..ReplyCancel

Love the card—looks like a butterfly migration. I am having some trouble. I got a Big Shot diecutting machine and some spellbinder dies. I place the die and paper between the two plastic shims and ran it through. It embossed the paper instead of cutting, and left a distinct mark in the shim.
    What are I doing wrong?ReplyCancel

I need to place another order, but maybe I will hold out until next week. Who knows maybe my number will be drawn. LOL. But I will always be thankful that you shared this storage method with us. It has been one of the best craft storage systems for all of my spellbinders (and I have tons), as well as other waiver die sets. Thanks.

This card is gorgeous I love butterflies too. I have not entered into any explanation via the translator, but I would see this presentation in a beautiful picture! My granddaughter is crazy about butterflies, and I have a good number of diseases butterflies! as the Spellbinders dies that are my favorite.
I think I’ve never done card without at least a little butterfly! good luck for the new draw, unfortunately I do not have blog and I live in France. But I subscribed long time and you have on Facebook. Becca thank you for all the inspiration you bring to us!ReplyCancel

Memorial Card Ideas by Becca Feeken using Quietfire Design - Garden Bench Collection and Spellbinders
Sweet friends, so sorry for the late post — I couldn’t let you come today without having something crafty to show, so I sat down to make a card before answering all the remaining questions there were left in comments on the last post :-)  Hang on until the end of the post for the winner information in the mean time, thank you for all the comments about my storage.  The Question Parking Lot will be featured at the end of appropriate posts going forward so that everyone can benefit from the answers.  Today, I’m sharing a card that will work well in memorial and will work very well for the upcoming holiday.  It’s a new sentiment from Quietfire Design Garden Bench Collection; it’s simple and it’s classic.  When I looked through my stash, this was one I did not have.  Although I’m not a scrapbooker per se, I’m thinking about doing some memorial pages because this stamp will work into what I had in mind fabulously.

WRBF-4296-2014

Here’s how I made it – step by step:

I started out with a card base sized at 5-1/2″ x 7-1/2″.  After embossing a panel using Spellbinders  Labels Thirty Four Medallion, I trimmed the panel down to 5″ x 7″, attached ribbon on the right side and adhered with foam tape.  I added a new die cut layer using Spellbinders Labels Twenty Nine and adhered it with foam tape.  The next die cut layer was cut using Spellbinders Romantic Rectangles Two; my sentiment was stamped before adhering with a double layer of foam tape.  The last die cut layer was cut using Spellbinders Radiant Rectangles.  I finished up with a sprig of pearls, a silk bow and an oval pearl brad.

CRAFT SUPPLIES I USED
Rubber Stamps: Quietfire DesignGarden Bench Collection
Craft Paper: Neenah Classic Crest – Natural White – 80 lb, Coredinations
Ink: Versafine Onyx Black
AccessoriesSpellbinders  Labels Thirty Four Medallion, Spellbinders Labels Twenty NineSpellbinders Romantic Rectangles TwoSpellbinders Radiant Rectangles, The Paper Studio Gems, May Arts Silk Ribbon, Grand Calibur Die Cut Machine

Did you ask a question about my last post?  Zoom on over to the Question Parking Lot to see the answer!

Here’s your winner for the clear cases!!  Be sure to reach out to me through the contact tab at the top right side of the blog with your address so that I can pass it on – you have 48 hours to claim them.

Amazing Paper Grace Die Storage
This is long overdue!  I promised quite some time ago that I would share how and where I store my dies. I have different types of dies, but right now the ones I use most are the thin metal dies.  I’ve tried a number of storage situations but knowing myself, I work best when things are within an arms reach and if they are organized and labelled.  I found a large Media Rack and installed (secured to the wall) on the left side of my crafting desk behind my computer.   I love this because it takes no desk space!WRBF-4289-2014
I’ve learned that if there’s something I have to get up to get for, if it’s something I have to dig through or if it is still in a package – I’m not likely to use it.  That’s my truth :-).  I’ve said before, I tend to be a die-centric paper crafter – in other words the die comes first then the stamps, paper and colors fall in after that.   My other ‘truth’ is that it’s easy to lose die pieces when I’m creating. For that reason, each die set has it’s own container and once done, all the pieces are put back in and that set is put away.  When I’m creating I have a shelf (see below) where I put the sets I’m currently using and because each set has magnet in the case – if something’s missing – I can tell right away (yes, this happens all the time).  Lol, you can see how worn my labels are – this is a system that has grown with me over the years and the dies get a lot of use :-)
WRBF-4291-2014

Random Notes:

I store large die sets in Clear DVD Cases and small sets in Clear CD Cases with magnetic sheets on one or both sides..  Extra large dies are stored in a binder (see my thoughts on that below).  I have several groupings – these make sense to my workflow and might not make work with your workflow but it helps me locate what I need:  My groups are Labels, Shapes, Card Creator, Accents and Motifs, Flowers, Borders, Expandables, D’Lites, In’Spires, Cut-Tuck-Fold and several other smaller subsets.  The colors on my labels have to do with the year the die was released because I try to use new dies along with old dies and it helps me locate them quickly.

The media rack was purchased at Best Buy here and while it is no longer available in store, it is available online.  These racks can be found in many stores and other locations online.  If I can open up enough wall space in my craft room, I’m looking to add a similar rack to include my stamps :-)

Look around, there are tons of great ways to store dies, it just happens that this is the best way for me.  I found that binders were too heavy for me to lift (I still store my Grand Dies in binders for the few occasions that I use them).  I also found that if my thin dies were not contained, that they were lost too easily.  Lastly, I found I could not keep them in original package because when it comes down to getting them out, they were not getting used.

2.    Pam Roth, comment #77 asked where I get the heavy duty cases.  All the links are above – simply click on Clear DVD Case or Clear CD Case.   Also, I wanted to make sure you know they are not heavy duty.  They are just like every day acrylic cases that you use for movie and computer CD/DVD’s because that’s what they are.  Mine have stayed in good shape because of the way they are stored here.  Every now and again I have to replace the small CD cases which have more fragile tabs but I have yet to have to replace a DVD case.  Mine have always arrived from Fedex intact, but if the mailman had a bad day and thew the box down, they may break.

3.  Dottie Davis, comment #79 asked how to store extra die cuts.  Glad you asked Dottie . . . when I get a new die, I cut it right away.  I do that so that I can see how it cuts and want to make sure it cuts perfectly.  For the first six months, I keep those extra die cuts in the case.  That way when I pull it down I have a sample right there.  After six months I have no doubt used the die several times and those extra cuts go in my die cut drawer.  I can’t tell you how often something from that drawer goes onto a new card – it was just in the right place at the right time!!  Never throw those away, they come in handy in for card planning!!

4.  Barb Parker, comment #86 asked how I reach stuff at the top.  I’m blessed to be almost 6 feet tall :-)  But I do have a step stool in my craft room.  It’s a fairly small room and to make the room work, I’ve gone vertical!

5.  Sarah, comment #142 asked if the full sheet or half sheet magnet was needed for a DVD case.  Depends on what your full sheet is Sarah.  If your full sheet is the one purchased at tapeonline, it is sized 4.75″ x 7″ which fits the full inside of one half of a DVD case.  You could cut it in half if you only wanted half of one side of the dvd case filled.  I use full 4.75″ x 7″ sheets.

6.  Jessica, comment #243 asked if I know how many dies I have.  LOL no, I don’t count them :-)  I’ve never been in a race to have more but have known for a long time that die cutting is my thing, the thing I enjoy.  What you see here are primarily Spellbinders dies but I have a hefty collection of Accucut, Sizzix (many original) and Memory Box dies along with Dayco, ZipeMate, Original Spellbinders and Quikutz.  These of course aren’t shown because they are larger and I have a different type of storage.  At any rate, back to the original question…the number varies because I trade, buy and switch depending on my style.  Keep in mind, I’ve been a die cutter since before the first Sizzix was released in 2001.  I used to go to our County School Board building, paper and kids in tow, to use Ellison die cut machines and some of the several hundred Ellison dies they had for teachers use.  Although I wasn’t a teacher, the kids and I had craft day all the time and I used my Dayco dies for cutting quilts.  I got my first professional die cut machine – Accucut GrandeMark in 2003 and got my first digital die cut machine – The Craftrobo Pro in 2005.  That said, almost 15 years is a long time to collect :-)

6.  Jean C, comment #244 and Mary Kimes, comment #263 asked about the baskets that hang over my media shelving holding dies.  They were purchased at IKEA.

7.  Beth Ellis, comment #268 asked what program I used to make my spine labels.  I used Excel and dropped the names into a regular spreadsheet grid and colored the columns.  I did this because the ACE Sheets are a recent addition at Tapeonline.  I used a whole page sticker sheet but will be very honest, my labels don’t stick well and I have to continually reinforce them with a dot of glue.

8.  Margie Luttrell, comment #322 asked how do I remember which set I want when creating.  For each type of die I keep a current catalog – either on my computer or printed (I prefer printed) and I flip through the catalog to look at shapes instead of hunting through the dies themselves.  Also I go to my extra die cuts drawer when I’m not quite sure what I want….

9.  Linda R, comment #374 asked about the catalog I use . . . great question Linda!  So the answer is why reinvent the wheel?  I simply download the latest Spellbinders Catalog.  It says in a drawer to the left of the desk you see in the picture.  Inside that catalog I mark what I have, what’s retired and what I’d like to get :-)  I have the same system with my Accucut and Sizzix dies – I keep both current and past catalogs in my handy dandy catalog drawer.

10. Ann Robbins, comment #377 asked if I buy my dies.  There’s really no set simple answer to this . . . in fact, this so made me smile.  I liken it to the Christmas that I thought I would work in a yarn shop to make money for Christmas.  I already hear your laughter!!  I made not a cent of extra money for Christmas but there’s sure a lot of yarn at my house and  in the end everyone was happy.

Oh my goodness, your room looks like paper crafting heaven to me!!! I can only imagine how many die sets you must have! I’ve been storing my dies in their packaging on a Clip-It-Up, but that’s really not a good system for me – I spend more time spinning that thing around looking for a specific die than I do actually using the die once I find it! This is awesome! I’ve been using a makeshift version of the CD case/magnetic sheet by recycling old CD cases, and cutting magnetic sheets to fit them. Not as neat as your system but it works for the dozen or so dies I’ve been able to accumulate. Appreciate your directions on this.ReplyCancel

I have been using this method since you first blogged that that is how you store your dies. I had originally had them on magnetic sheets in protective sheets in a binder, but you’re right, they get way too heavy. Anyway, currently, I have more dies than cases, so this would be a great prize to finish organizing. Again, thanks for all of your creations/ideas.ReplyCancel

  • Dottie DavisMay 16, 2014 - 4:25 pm

Thanks for sharing your organization for dies method. After seeing this on your blog a few years back I switched to organizing my dies the same way. I have heard of other methods, but to me, this works the best. The only thing I wished I would have done is put one die set in a case instead of two. Hindsight, so half of mine have two sets and the other half one set. I tried the spray adhesive on the first half, trying to save money, but they are coming off. Where I used the self adhesive magnets, have stayed put. The little thin dies sent from Sizzix, I leave in the plastic pouch lined on their sides in a decorative shoe box. I can pull these out easily. One problem I am befuddled with is how to organize my extra die cuts. Seems when I do a project there are always some that are experimental but nice that I don’t want to throw away. Got any ideas Becca? Like the others I too would love to see how you organize the rest of your craft room…it may help me a bunch! Thanks for the opportunity for win these CD & DVD cases. They would be awesome to win and finish what I started.ReplyCancel

Thank you, Becca, for showing your die storage. You could not have posted for me at a better time: my craft room is so small and I have numerous dies. I am finally moving my craft room to a larger room and I am trying to figure out how to store my dies. I wrote Spellbinders asking if I could buy empties of their new packages (which I love!) but they were unable to do so. Since their response I have been searching the web looking for the best solution. This may work!

Thanks, Becca! And thanks for the chance! Have a good weekend. :)ReplyCancel

OMG Becca…your storage system is wonderful!! I too have struggled with storage of my dies as I’m sure thousands have!! I currently have my dies stored in ArtBin’s that come with about 4 metal die “sheets” and then you can purchase additional die sheets from them. They do accommodate quite a number of die sheets, and I used a Label Maker to put labels all over the front of the case to show me what dies are contained within. While this is an okay way to store my dies, the bad thing is….when you open the case to flip through the different die sets, some of the dies slide off the die sheet, and they get quite heavy when you are searching to the last set of dies in the case!!! I would LOVE to win this giveaway and store them neatly but separately in their own case. I already have a wall sized metal shelving unit that has adjustable shelves that I could store them in! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that random.org picks me!! Thanks so much for the chance!ReplyCancel

I just ordered my first thin metal dies a few days ago. Can’t wait for them to arrive. I so appreciate the experience-based tips that you have shared. I will benefit from your knowledge as I begin to develop my own organizational plan for storing my new goodies.

Certainly agree with your thoughts about using supplies and putting them right back in place. I follow this “rule” with my cling stamps as I am terrified of losing them in all the crafting rubble. :)ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca
Love how you store all your dies. I store the smaller ones in CD cases and my larger ones in the stamp cases I get from Stamping Up and put magnetic sheets in them, as I do in the CD cases. Sure would love to win the cases but I am not in the US. I am in Ontario, Canada
Keep making all your lovely cards, you inspire me to mix up my dies and try new ways of using them.if I don’t have the dies you have used I try dies that I do have that may do the same thing.ReplyCancel

Becca…As always your “imBeccable” style shines through–this Giveaway could not happen at a better time–my dies have outgrown the popular art box with magnetic sheets and I am always annoyed by having to take the ALL out to see where the die I am looking for IS!

Staples never sells anything like this–believe me I have researched this challenge about 19 times.

Wonderful giveaway from Tapeonline! I’ve been ordering from them since I saw one of your posts last fall and I love this system. And their customer service is of the highest standard. I don’t use my dies as often as you do (of course!) so I usually cut the front of the Spellbinder card to fit the front of the DVD case and tape it to the front of the case. This way the spine is labeled and the picture of the die is on the front. It helps remind me what it looks like cut and shows me all the different cuts it can make. Thanks Becca for thinking of us!ReplyCancel

I store my dies in their original plastic packages, slit on three sides to open like a book. I have one large box of dies that is a chore to get through. Sometimes two sets will stick together because of their shape. Plus I have to lift them out to see what’s inside. It would be fantastic to put them in, labeled CD cases for easier access! Oh, how I hope I win this package! Thank you Becca!ReplyCancel

I skipped reading all the other comments so I could say “you could be my twin” (organization queen) ! I love it!!! Like you, if I have to look for it, it interrupts my creative thought process. I will not use it if it’s an inconvenience to get to it. My crafting friend says I’m obsessed with being organized and I’m sending her your email, so she can see your craft room! I think it’s beyond wonderful!

I currently have my dies stored in binders (got the idea from a crafter I met at a crop) and you’re right; they are heavy after you get so many of them. Going to try something else because I don’t have room enough for a media center because I have too much paper.

Also, I noticed what looks like 12×12 cases in your craft room. Are those storage containers for paper? All that said…your space is neat and very well organized and that probably contributes to the beautiful work you produce.ReplyCancel

Becca, thanks for sharing your die storage system, AND offering the chance to win cases & magnet sheets! I started storing mine in CD boxes with individual “hanging files” to slide the die set in. I quickly learned that system worked only for small dies. I then switched to large 3 ring binders… That worked really well for Grand Caliber dies — but the binders ended up being very heavy. I am vertically challenged (5′ 2″), so pulling those heavy 3 ring binders off the shelf, I risk a concussion each time I look for a die! I need a new storage system! Thanks for your inspiration!ReplyCancel

Thanks for a second peek into your craft space. I would really like to see a full-room view of that super-organized area! I have been very happy with the new packaging Spellbinders dies are coming in (as well as some other manufacturers). I don’t feel so bad about tossing all that packaging now! (I already have a drawer full of those packages I’ve saved to use in my crafting… only so much room for keeping those things!!) Great post, Becca!!ReplyCancel

I currently store my dies in a 12×12 album. I use 6 up and 4 up storage folders for the most part with a magnetic sheet inside. I can see that as I acquire more dies, this is not going to be feasible. I’m actually considering multiple 3-ring binders (again 12×12), so I can organize the dies into groups. I have been fortunate to be allowed a corner in one of the “common rooms” in the retirement facility my husband and I moved into recently, so my storage space is extremely limited.ReplyCancel

I bought two sets of the DVD’s last year when you focused on them. They have worked well for my steel die storage. I had a couple left over and put some stamps sets in them – these worked great, but I have yet not bought any more cases – you reminded me – I must get on with that one job (at least!) Thank you, JulieReplyCancel

  • Clare WMay 17, 2014 - 12:59 am

I store my dies on mag sheets in A5 boxes grouped into types – larger ones that dont fit are in an A4 box and grand dies are in magnetic folders. The majority are in A5 boxes and I find they dont take up much storage space that way and I only have a small box to flick thro when I want to find something. Think I need to review storage in my craft room – I have a spare wall I was thinking of putting shelving on but perhaps a media centre would be better – I will have to ponder that one!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
GREAT storage, but unfortunately I haven’t got the wall space.
I store my dies on magnetic sheets which are stuck to original packaging showing a picture of the dies. The wallets re 5×9 in. and contain 12 pockets. I number each folder and label the dies with the folder no. they’re stored in. Any dies too big for the folders are stored on a “clip-it-up” carousel floor stand (by SimplyRenee).
I also transfer the visual image of a die/set as I order and store it by adding it to a computer folder called “visual dies”. Once received and stored, I store the location ref. in the catalogue.
In this way I can browse through my catalogue to see which dies I want to use.
I also catalogue all my stamps/embossing folders and masks which are mostly stored on my floor stand in their packaging. Again, the packaging has a label containing the location, as does the image in the “catalogue”.
My catalogues are computer folders named “visual stamps, visual embossing folders etc”.
I find this system serves me well.
Hope it has helped other crafty folk………
    Hugs, RoseReplyCancel

I use a combination of these CD cases and a system I created that consists of 6×12 chipboard covered on one side with magnetic sheet. I stand these in a container right behind my die cutting machine. This allows me to have some of my favorite dies very close at hand. I also keep some of the more intricate ones here and the simpler shapes in the CDs. This way I can quickly thumb through them and search for what will work on the project. I would like to try the DVD cases someday and work those in to my system. Love your work, thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

I also store embossing folders with a sample sheet insert and a tab label. Several fit in a photo box. This helps to “play with layouts” when I want to use dies, embossed texture, and stamps. Wow! Lots of comments! You are so organized Becca! What a great system you have! I currently have all my Spellbinder dies in Photo Boxes in their original folder on magnets. Other dies are kind of here & there! Having just bought our 1st house, the rooms are to small, so I went & purchase a 10′ x 20′ storage building for my craft room. What a challenge it is as I have less furniture and went from a square room to a rectangle. These cases would be perfect for storing both dies and stamps. I will be removing the majority of my stamps from the wood mounts and there are a lot of them. Thanks for the chance to win them. I am going to have to buy some even if I do win them. I love the labeling on them. Hugs LoriReplyCancel

I use these cases without the magnetic sheet for all of my clear stamps. I use a somewhat different system for filing, but you can easily tailor it to what works for you. Can’t say enough good things about storing die cuts and clear stamps in these containers. Thank you, Bekka, for a great idea that I have easily been able to successfully implement.ReplyCancel

I too started using the DVD cases after seeing your post over a year ago. I have FINALLY gotten around to labeling my cases. I procrastinated because I couldn’t quite decide on how to organize them! Finally I started putting my ideas on paper and once I had “played” around with the categories for awhile I ordered the ACE label sheets from Tape on Line. I do have one question though. The program for typing into the labels is a Word program not an Excel spread sheet and I was stumped as to how to color code the labels. Then I had a “light bulb” moment” and decided to simply draw lines with a pencil to create the little boxes and then used my Copic markers to color code things! Seems to be working for me, but I am sure I will be tweaking it as I go along. Out of curiosity, what program do you use to create your labels? Also, I love the media storage shelves and plan to look into purchasing one – or maybe two- as my die collection continues to grow! Blessings to you on this lovely May morning!ReplyCancel

Wow!! That is amazing and so neat. I’ve been trying to make my small collection of dies more accessible. It’s so much easier to pull them off the magnetic sheet instead of trying to get it out of the original packaging. Thanks for a chance to win. If I’m lucky, I could buy some more dies to fill them up!ReplyCancel

  • Joanne O'BrienMay 17, 2014 - 3:40 pm

Becca, I love your die storage system and think it would work for me. Right now all my dies are in two plastic sterlite containers, some in their original packages and some in cd cases. What a mess! Thanks for the opportunity to win and get organized. I need something to get me going and cut my clutter..ReplyCancel

  • Jean BullockMay 17, 2014 - 4:14 pm

What a great way to store the dies. Right now mine are in a binder. Worked OK when I had just a few but now it takes two hands to lift the binder. Your system would certainly be a blessing to win. Thanks for the chance.ReplyCancel

I love the way you store your dies. I would love to win your storage system. It will be a great way to start building my collection of holders and magnetic sheets to store my dies. I have yet to find an acceptable way to store my dies. Your system will be perfect for me.ReplyCancel

  • caroleMay 17, 2014 - 4:46 pm

I started using the clear case storage boxes after the first time you showed them. I love it, however, I have so many dies now that I have to decide how to expand my shelving to hold more of them. I have been listing them in a notebook, but then I have to locate the actual die! With more shelves I could follow your idea of dividing the dies the same way I have them listed in the notebook.ReplyCancel

My goodness you can tell you have been collecting for a long time but your organizational method makes finding just the right die easy. I just re-organized my stamp room and it has made items easier to find. I like you don’t use it if I have to spend 1/2 hour looking for it. I may have to invest in one of your wall units for my stamps that I store in CD and DVD cases TFSReplyCancel

WOW! That is some awesome & well thought out storage system. I have started keeping my dies in the Magnet Art bins, which is working so far, but I need to have them on shelves for easier access. Stamps are jumbled so spend a lot of time hunting for something or forget that I have it. How do you easily reach those baskets up at the top? Thanks for taking time to photo & share this storage system with blogland. Blessings & HugsReplyCancel

  • ANN ROBBINSMay 19, 2014 - 7:00 am

I have well over 100 sets of dies and since the Art Bin box for dies with magnetic sheets came out I have bought 4 and most are filled. I use one for shapes, one for flowers and butterflies, one for borders and one for CHristmas. When I buy new dies, I cut off the label and staple it to the back of the magnetic sheet. That way if I don’t \put the die back in as soon as I use it, I still know which mat it goes on. On the outside of the box, I have a typed list of everything that is in the box by the S number and name of die. It is working quite well for me.
Becca, I always look forward to your new blog and wish you did one everyday!!
My question is this: Does Spellbinder supply you with all the latest releases or do you have to buy them all. Thought maybe this one of the benefits of being a “Spellbinder designers.”

Becca, your additional comments are answering a lot of my questions…thank you so much. I have an extensive collection of dies – my thing too – and am searching for a better way to store them. I have an Excel spread sheet on my phone, i-Pad, and computer so I can tell when shopping what I have. However, it does not allow me to SEE what I have without going thru my two zippered 3″ binders sorted with an A-Z dividers and stored in photo inserts with a magnet piece…I do file by shape (rectangle under R, circles under C, and also by item – flower under F). These binders are VERY heavy now and totally full – and this is only my Spellbinder dies! I have LOTS of Cheery Lynn Designs, as well as the companies you mentioned and they are in snap ware again A-Z, etc. Your way seems to be ideal, and you mention you have a catalog…can you please describe your catalog and how you index it…pretty please.

I reallllly appreciate your answering our questions regarding your storage system for dies. It is a big thing to keep organized or we waste a lot of time hunting for stuff and that takes the fun right out of making cards and such. Thanks for your input, too, on putting a cut die in each dvd case so you can see how it cuts. That makes perfect sense. Also, the die catalog you made to peruse what you want to use, is a perfect solution instead of thumbing through dies looking for “just the right one.”ReplyCancel

  • TeresaMay 19, 2014 - 1:29 pm

EEKKK!!! I forgot to comment again on Saturday and Sunday! Hope that won’t penalize me too much! Thanks for answering my question about what program you used for your labels, Becca! I had considered using those full sheets too and doing the Excel thing but when Tape on Line added those nice ACE individual labels I decided to with that. The Copic color markers are working well for me. I made a paper “Key” so I know what color stands for what. (Visual people like paper copies!) As I use the system more, I am becoming more familiar with what the colors stand for and don’t have to use the key as often. Would love to win more cases but am not too concerned. Hubby says he can install the media rack for me when we rearrange/remodel my craft room. Yea!!! Can’t wait for that to happen!ReplyCancel

Thank you so much for this post. I have a very small collection of dies but I also need to have them within easy reach or I just don’t use them. You have given me several ideas! I have been pondering what to do for storage. Hopefully I’ll get it all organized soon! I work (play) so much better when it is organized. I especially like your labeling/organizing of shape type. I’ll have to try that.ReplyCancel

I personally would be delighted to see how you set up around your work station the items used to make cards; like ribbons, embellishments, inks, and all. I have been leaving comments in hopes that I am the lucky winner of this amazing prize package so I can get my dies corralled and more manageable but I don’t think I have thanked you yet for sharing this very detailed and helpful post. So, THANK YOU for sharing this information with us!
I have done tons of research on how the best way to store dies is and after learning MANY ways to store them I have come to the conclusion that this way is the one that would best suit MY die storage needs. I know that everyone prefers a different system but after trying lots of ways and being frustrated with them all this way seems like it would suit my needs. The only thing holding me back is cost so winning this would enable me to give this storage solution a try sooner than later.
I will be keeping my fingers crossed hoping to see my name later today as the incredibly blessed recipient of this prize package! If I don’t win then I will still be happy for whoever does win. Jealous but happy for them! Thank you for the chance to get started on organizing my rather large die collection!
Have a great day and I will be stopping by later to see who won!ReplyCancel

  • Paula GaleMay 28, 2014 - 5:18 pm

    Hi Becca

I’m only just reading this post and just habe to tell you that this is exactly how I store my dies only mine are in the black dvd slim cases that I get very cheaply from the discount store. I print out a lovely colourful sleeve showing me exactly what is in there. Inside I also cut down pieces of magnetic storage sheet and find that as long as it is long enough to sit all the dies on length ways, it doesn’t need to be the whole width to keep them in place. These are stored on a dvd shelf/rack turned so that tney are stored horizontally. I managed to set up so that the description fit right on the spine of the case too (that took some doing!). I then group them into nestabilities, shapeabilities, labels etc then the nesties split into squares, circles, ovals etc, and the shapeabilities into group I.e. Christmas, nature, Accessories. I haven’t got a fraction of what you have (not many people have lol), but I have had this system since the beginning when I bought my first die cutting machine back at Christmas 2009 – way before I began blogging and finding lots of wonderful alternative storage ideas. However, I think this system works brilliantly – it seems that great minds think alike!!

Thanks for sharing your way of organising your dies!
