Sweet Blog Friends, if you were mildly curious why I have been MIA, then I have an admission to make.  My table has been covered with new products and it’s frankly like being a kid in the candy store.  Wrist deep in some tantalizing new Spellbinders is every crafters dream so I thought I would show you one that is going to be at the top of my “go-to” list as well as a project or two to show you why I fell in love with it right away.

The new die template I’m using is Spellbinders Marvelous Squares.  It’s a mix and match die template that offers a near infinite possibilities in layers as well as an infinite possibilities of detail within those layers.  On this project I’m using a piece that has decorative edges and I’ve folded them into a star arrangement for a package embellishment, an ornament collar, and a stand alone ornament.  For the gold gift box I’m using the star as an embellishment piece.
The ornament collar below is folded from a thin vellum paper and edged with a gold pen.

For the stand alone ornament below you can see the detail from the die template on the tips of the star points.  That simply made my heart sing!!

ETA:  Many have emailed me to ask, so I’ve done some poking around understand these die templates are scheduled to ship in mid-August!

SUPPLIES LIST
Die Cutting Machine: Spellbinders™ Grand Calibur® machine
Dies: S4-483 Spellbinders Marvelous Squares – MSRP $24.99
Cross Promotional Partners: Scor-Pal – ScoreTapePaper
:  The Paper Studio
Ink: None
Accessories: Recollections Pearls, Krylon Gold Pen, Buttons, Joann’s Tulle, Ribbon

But let’s look at this die template in greater detail.  Here I’ve created a layered, interlocking gatefold card in a jacket that’s 6″ x 6″.  Because of all the possibilities with the layers and details on the layers, I used one die template set to complete the whole card!!  Cutouts and layers create the illusion of intricacy but one peek at the YouTube Video Tutorial I’ve created will blow away all the smoke and mirrors I used to make the card and I hope you’ll give it a try!  Here’s the card tucked away safe in a decorative jacket.

Here is the card outside of the jacket.

Then you can see how the card layers match up with the gatefold sides to open below.

And finally the inside.

I have a YouTube Video here to show you how!  (available in HD)

I wanted to comment on your very last post but was unable to so am making that comment on this post. Your post, as they often do, really spoke to me. I lost my best girlfriend suddenly in March. We spoke daily on the phone, sometimes more than once. I cannot tell you how much I miss our phone conversations, especially when I am frustrated about something. She was really there for me, especially after I lost my husband, checking on me almost daily to make sure I was ok, even after five years that he’d been gone. You really don’t know what someone means to you until they are gone from your life. She never judged me but always spoke her opinion. She was always happy to see you and you were never an imposition. She was just a truly wonderful person, very religious minded, so I know she is in good hands.ReplyCancel

Is there a step–by-step as to HOW to fold the new squares into snowflake-like ornaments? Or does the village idiot (me) have to wing it to figure it out after shelling out too-much money for the dies and then not know how to use them properly. Loved the gate fold card but I have my planning in the works for Christmas and some paper ornaments and cards as that is all we will be able to afford this year. The hospital that saved my life from the dreaded cancer that they told me would take my life has now turned into the evil Witch of the West and will not allow me to pay off my last hospital stay ($1,156. that the insurance doesn’t intend to cover). So this will be an extra-lean Christmas, even if we can squeeze out the $24.95 plus tax and shipping to get the die needed to make something hand-made for Christmas!
So please, a video as to how to make the snowflake-like things?ReplyCancel

Oh blog friends, I had not intended to be gone for so long but I’ve been so busy behind the scenes.  Today I have a Becca Bit for you and some news – in fact, I hope we can make it a date!!  As you know every June/July new craft products start to roll out in anticipation of CHA.  That’s when I get kind of quiet with the new things I’m designing behind the scenes.  Well, it’s time again for Blog Frenzy and I’m so excited!!!  It starts on June 21st which is tomorrow but I can just tell you this little secret, I’m in Central Time Zone so my post will go live tonite at 11pm.  There are tons of new die templates to see and the contest is going to be awesome this go around!!  So, please come back around midnight so that you can get your name in the drawing and be prepared to be totally enabled!!

Now, on to a Becca Bit I’ve been trying to share for a while.  Since I’ve managed to collect all the Distress Inks, I was so intrigued by the nibs you can use to apply color.  Once I got rolling with it, I decided to get enough nibs for one per color and of course I needed some way to store them.  Just recently I purchased the nib holder to go along with the nibs and I really like this set up.  I simply used one of my clear cases and cut clear acetate to fit into both sides of the case and put a piece of double sided tape down the front on top of the acetate.  On the underside of the acetate I put listing of the colors with enough space in between each that the nib could be stored with the color.  I have a piece of wax paper that is cut to size – when I close the case, I simiply lay the wax paper in so that none of the nibs touch, if they are still a little moist they won’t affect each other and to keep the tape on one side from sticking to another.

This is a card I did several months ago that was colored using the nibs – I love the control and the way the nib handles the pigment from the reinker so I thought I’d share.  You can find the original post for the card along with the product list HERE.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I’m so eager to hear what you think of what I have to show tomorrow!!

  • Charlotte ZweigoronJune 20, 2012 - 1:02 pm

Great idea, Becca. I’m saving up for some of those cases but I can’t afford 200 at one crack so I need to find some crafting buddies to share an order.

I keep my Distress Ink Pads stored upside down in drawers that are just deep enough to stack them two high along with my homemade foam pad holders (also stamped with the name and color it belongs to) resting on top of them. I keep certain color families together and stamp an image on the bottom of each case with the color contained inside. Since they are upside down, you see the color first thing. I have had to refresh them occasionally but I do all of my ink pads this way… upside down with the color stamped on the bottom of the container.

And, yes, we have a date. Have you noticed the stores having great clearance sales? Making room for the new stuff, I bet! Also, since you are a MIchael’s regular, have you seen the Paula Dean papers in the $1 Bins? (At my store it is a $1.50 Bin but my sister in SC still only pays $1) Paula Dean?? I was sceptical thinking they would have to be fattening in some way (!) but they are nice and have a lot of pretty little florals which I know you love and I haven’t gained an ounce since I bought them!ReplyCancel

Thanks for another handy hint for storage.ReplyCancel

I had already thought of that way to store my nibs also, but I could not figure out a way to keep them in place when I closed the case in order for them to not run all over. But I have doubts about the wax paper, do the wax paper protects them or do you use something else in order for them to stick down? Becca – thanks for your post. Excited for the blog frenzy from Spellbinders and to see what incredible projects you have come up with once again.

Are the nibs for the water pen that you use with the new Tim Holtz distress markers? I am not sure? I don’t have these yet but I believe I saw a video showing how to color using a water pen with an interchangeable nib?

    Thanks for all you do!!!!ReplyCancel

You’re gonna think I’m chatty today.  I actually wrote this last week but got sidelined for a few days with an issue.  I’m hands deep in a project but wanted to let you know that Something good is always on the way.   This has been a tough week at home, I’ve been feeling so tested, and have done my best not to complain and have tried to understand the “why”.   I waited it out and as always happens, something good always shows up – so much of the time it’s far better than what originally went wrong.

On Memorial Day I was going to the cemetery with new flowers and on the way down my street, I got a flat tire on my car.  I eased back down the street to put the car in the driveway and set out in the truck.  Once I got uptown, I figured out I had a screw in the tire so I called DD to drive me to cemetery and ultimately to follow me home. We stopped at every gas station on the way to put air in since auto repairs were closed for the day.   Two flats in one day – how does that happen?  The next day since I had nothing to drive, I conquered how to change a flat – yes, it took me an hour and a half, but I did it!  Driving  to Sams Club for a repair, I just knew that I’d have to buy a new tire.  The man helping me was soooo nice and they only charged me $15.00!  Something good is always on the way.

I knew I couldn’t change a tire on a big ole truck and today when the guy came to mow the lawn he said he noticed I had a flat tire and that he could fix it.  He did!  He added air and plugged the hole.  Something good is always on the way.

Yesterday, my Central Air Conditioning/Heating died in the house.  It’s quite hot in Florida right now.  I’ll have to admit that I did have a little cry over this one, a stress cry.   I know it’s not repairable because I just paid to have it repaired 15 days ago.  So after an hour or two I called a good company to get a quote and oh, he let me have the quote.  Stress cry a little bit more :-)  Smart me sat down and called the tiny company that normally does maintenance to get a comparable quote and it seems that for a relatively little amount, they can fix the motor which will buy me another six months to a year.  Something good is always on the way.

I’m.all.good!  We all have those days, it’s not just me.  It feels good to get through it and I thank God for equipping me with the patience to know that something good is always on the way…

I’ve been out of touch here and wrote this last week on June 5th and didn’t want too much time to get away from me before sharing.  Today I wanted to share one of my older cards that I came across in a link sent to me; the original post and product list is HERE.  It so made me smile so I decided to share it again for newer readers!  Thanks to all of you that participated in the giveaway – the winner has been acknowledged and lucky Lisa is also a verified email subscriber for more than 30 days.   She’ll also be getting a goodie box from me as a thank you for her loyalty as an everyday reader.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for stopping by, see you soon!!

As I was reading your note… I was cringing a bit because I figured you had a sad story to tell and I was right. I also realized that when these things happen to me my first reaction is to ‘cry’… I hate it because I know better, but that is my first reaction. After the waterworks I pick myself up and get to work to get whatever mishaps fixed! I hope the rest of your week will be sunny and bright.ReplyCancel

Becca: My dad died when I was thirteen. My mom, a strong believer, faced obstacle after obstacle. It seemed like one thing after another either broke, or gave up the ghost, or went wrong. The town even raised the taxes on the family home….It was such an amazing thing to see her pull through each trial with her faith, not just in tact, but multiplied! She used to sing this little chorus: “Something good is going to happen to you, happen to you, this very day. Something good is going to happen to you. Jesus of Nazareth is passing your way.” His eye is on the sparrow…and he watches you, too! Hugs!!!ReplyCancel

Boy, can we all identify with your crazy “flat tire” day. When we were putting an addition on our house there were nails all over the place that my grandsons loved to use to make all sorts of missles and guns, etc. The youngest of the two took two of those nails and put them under the tires of my car who knows why. The rest is history. It wasn’t until years later did the little culprit admit to what he did. Anyway, this card is charming. I absolutely love the ribbon rose and the rouching. It is stunning.ReplyCancel

The beauty of the cards we make can not only encourage other, but us. We had a real tragedy happen to 2 staff people at my school. With heavy hearts we were going to face the next day. I grabbed a few of my homemade cards (I TRY to make 2-1 to give away and 1 to keep for a sample). I needed something pretty to look at to take away the mental picture of these people being notified of the tragedy. 3 of us had a card sitting on our desks to get through the day. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the cards was a Becca inspired piece of art. Thank you for the many ways you encourage us. You are one brave woman!ReplyCancel

I have a handicapped daughter and for the first year of her life my thing was always “Why me Lord, what did I do?” But after a year, I decided that I needed to change my attitude and “Why me changed to “He only asks you to take on what he thinks you can handle. And the rest is history and now “something good is always on the way.” So too when I found you, I knew that you and Spellbinders were the something good. This is just another magnificant one of your pieces of work and I just love the ribbon and flower ~ absolutely beautiful.

Both of our families cars blew out, in the span of 3 days. we are now scrambling to money so we can fix our remaining car and find another for me to drive when school starts. Our friend’s family had everything possible go wring with their car. The total cost to fix it was almost $2,000 :( Both of us moms’ coupon on a one income families. I feel so awful that you are having so much come at you all at once!! It only happens when we least expect it and when we are the least “ready”. God knows our sorrows and I pray He will heal yours and lift you up, this week :)

When ever my family or myself gets “slammed” with problems, it always helps me to know that so many of the people God was able to use for good , were also tried by “fire”. (so to speak) We are supposed to count it all joy as we go through the trials, but golly that is hard to do. I am begining to believe that once we get that through our heads though, “stuff” stops happening so much. So just keep telling your self to count it all joy until your heart finally “gets” it. In the mean time, know you have lots of friends praying for you. How blessed can you get. God bless…..deniceReplyCancel

Thanks, Becca, for the wonderful story. It’s a good reminder to always keep looking up. I think I’ll post myself a little note with this saying – it’s a good one. And it’s OK to cry over stuff – God sees our troubles and knows our heart. He is our provider, and he provides good stuff! You have a marvelous week – and keep those beautiful cards coming.ReplyCancel

Becca, Thank you for sharing your story with us. It is very difficult sometimes isn’t it. We have just gone thru a time like this ourselves. We ran out of oil and had no hot water for 3 weeks because we could not afford to get even 1/2 a tank at the time because it is so expensive. Our Hydro company threatened to cut off our Hydro and the bank sent us a letter to say that our Mortgage was in danger because we had let our insurance on our house laps. We had to let the insurance go because they wanted us to replace the oil tank immediate (even though there is nothing wrong with it) because their new policy states that oil tanks need to be changed every 10 yrs. Our youngest son 3yrs old lost his glasses and the Dr. said we “have to replace them” (He has a very serious eye disease) The glasses are almost $400.00 and we have no medical coverage. I returned my vehicle because our lease was up and for the first time in our lives we have gone down to a one car family. (this may seem silly but we live in the country and have to be able to go to work etc. often in the opposite direction at the same time of day) All of this happened in a matter of a few weeks time.
Well here we are a few weeks later and things are looking up. I spoke with the Hydro company and have arranged a payment plan. We made enough money that we could buy 1/2 a tank of oil. The oil has been delivered and we all loved our nice warm shower. (no more water in the tub from the kettle) We have been able to order a new oil tank thru my brother in law that was able to get us a discounted price due to his job. Praise the Lord we found our sons glasses so we do not have to buy new ones. We are both busy with work again and the phone is still ringing with future work.
Both my husband and I are self employed and unfortunately we both had a very slow winter. By the time Spring came around the money was gone. But do you know what God has never left us and we will never loose faith in him. Our two little boys are learning just as my husband and I are. God can not be appreciated without the tough times in our lives. He never promised us that becoming a Christian would be easy. He does promise that it will be worth it. We may have been inconvenienced but really that is all that it was. Were we scared? You bet we were but the reality is we have a roof over our head and beds to sleep in. We have food to eat and we live in a safe country. That is better than most people in this world can say.
God has taken care of us no matter what trials come our way and he will always answer our prayers if we are willing to just be patient and receive them in His time. While I may not want my family to go thru this ever again, I did learn from it and we are stronger for it. When and if God’s will puts us there again I will be thankful that he knows he has made us strong enough to get thru it.ReplyCancel

So sorry to learn of your trials & tribulations last week. But I loved reading the sunny spin you put on it, with the “good somthings on the way”. My mum always said that we need life’s lows to appreciate the highs. But then again, I don’t need to tell you this. You could write the manual to teach the rest of us how to get through the rough patches in life.

    Your card is sweet.ReplyCancel

  • Ellen - CardMonkeyJune 12, 2012 - 3:59 pm

Arrrgh, what challenges you’ve been thrown! You are good spirited to write about it. Sometimes I have found that I can handle the entire camel’s load of challenges, and then it’s the “last straw” that will break the back. I found that recently, when my carpet “steam” cleaner instead decided to dump a load of water on my carpets and then QUIT. Arrgh. Well, jolly! I have a 3-year agreement to replace a breakage, I’ll just run on down to Sears and get myself a new one, as promised in the contract, and get that dirty water up off my wool rugs (that now stink from being WET). And son-of-a-gun, the agreement was due to expire in 2 weeks! YAHOO! Not so fast! The new terms were they have an opportunity to fix … ugh … and it must be sent out. Whine, whine ….

I spent fully 5 hours on the phone trying to get it back quicker, and a lot of empty promises, arguing, non-customer “service” … and finally, someone who heard my utter frustration sent me a $50 Sears gift card to get myself a rental while awaiting the repair. YAY. It only took 10 days, fans, blotting, etc. to get the gift card to get the rental….

….then I went to get the rental, and hubster said, oh, just buy a new one — it’s “only” $300 and not worth the price of replacing the now-moldy rugs. And besides, just the day before we bought a new mattress and boxspring and at CHECK-OUT learned the old one was still on warranty and saved $1000 (!!!) and now the rugs needed to be cleaned under the bed so the new one could be set up on delivery ….

…so off to Sears I went, gift card in hand. Bought a new cleaner, it works great. Mattress to be delivered but the truck broke down … ugh ….. no place to sleep now that the carpets are drying and old bed is taken down … whine, whine, whine … they agree to get a different truck and deliver 7 hours late, but still on the same day … Bed comfy, sleep well…

And the next day, Sears called to say your carpet cleaner’s been fixed, come get it.

And that it life. Somedays, good is always on the way, it just takes a while to get there — and we become bald pulling out our hair getting there.

    Smile . Tomorrow . Is . Another . Day.

    Much love,
    Ellen ? CardMonkeyReplyCancel

Becca, despite roadside assistance and the fact that it is often safer to stay in one’s vehicle, I firmly believe that every woman who is able bodied, should know how to change a tire. Congratulations!

When things go wrong, I ‘try’ to remember that it could be a blessing in disguise. Perhaps, those lost minutes saved you from a collision or worse. Though, why two… There are, undoubtedly, reasons.

Screws and nail holes can always be repaired inexpensively (even really big ones) and mechanics have assured me, that the tire is every bit as good as new. It generally only costs five or ten dollars.

Thanks for your wonderful and personal post Becca! And thanks for
sharing the gorgeous card. I too adore shoes (at least for cards) and, this is an idea that I can really run with! Thank you and God bless!ReplyCancel

What an unusual card, and so impressive. I really like it. (over the top) meaning good… so sorry about all the misadventures, sometimes they seem to come in two’s and three’s. Thank God for caring and sharing people, at these times. …..thanks for sharing…lots of hugs

    example: my husband was in Korea, and it was Christmas Day, the children and I were coming home from Church. Had two flat tires, the sink pluged up in the kitchen, the ice maker broke, and the door to the garage from the kitchen came off its hinges. All I could do was sit and watch football and did some crewel needle work with a few tears. My neighbor later that day came over and took care of the door, and sink. next day the car.     Becca, it is always nice to get over some bad times, and we all know that day in day out, what matters most? Here I have something to share with you, which I received just yesterday, some soothing quotes that you may like to read;
1.All things in life are temporary. If going well, enjoy it, they will not last forever. If going wrong, don’t worry, they can’t last long either.
2.Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, Relax, sweetheart, it’s just a bend, not the end!
3.When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when GOD doesn’t solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.
    4. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed for you.
5.WORRYING does not take away tomorrow’s TROUBLES, It takes away today’s PEACE.
Love you, on your happy days and your bad days.ReplyCancel

Becca, thanks for reminding me that something good is always on the way!!! I love the way you acknowledged every positive moment, no matter how small. What a great lesson for me today of all days when I just finished blogging about Psalm 37 verse 4 – Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Here’s a bit about what I shared with my readers about the meaning of this verse: “If you’ve fully resigned yourself into God’s hands, then you’re able to endure any and all hardships. Your Father’s desire is for you to be able to go about your daily business without fear or anxiety, totally trusting in His care. And your resignation to Him has a very practical effect in your life. The more resigned you are to God’s care and keeping, the more indifferent you’ll be to the conditions around you.”

And HOPEFULLY, to cheer you up even more, I want you to know that I used your Peg Bow maker for the card on my blog today. You are a such blessing to your readers so it makes me sad when you don’t have a good day. God bless and stay positive.ReplyCancel

I know where you get your strength, but what I want to know is how do you CONTINUE to be so darn positive? You are the most uplifting person I “know”. I constantly read your posts and admire you for what you have overcome. I know, I’m guessing you’re embarassed by anyone admiring you for what you find to be Just “you”. But, girl, you are a bright light many days when I would rather crawl back into bed! Congrats on fixing that tire! I don’t think I could have managed.ReplyCancel

I, too, am a widow. My husband could do anything and I became so used to his ability to fix things that I took it for granted. Now that he is gone it seems everything in the house has broken down at least once. I have to live in the present because that is all I have for sure. God gives me the strength to face each obstacle as it comes along, as He does you. I have never changed a tire and I doubt that at my age I would have the strength to lift the tire (I am 77 years old). But I know without a doubt that if a situation presented itself that God would give me the strength and determination to do that too. I admire you for your outlook and your faith in the good Lord.ReplyCancel

Very true indeed, Becca. Something good is always on the way. When we feel the odds are stacked against us and are running out of our strength and resources, there’s always a bright light awaiting us at the end of the tunnel—and it is the light of the Lord constantly reminding us that He will never leave us nor forsake us, that THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING GOOD THAT COMES OUT OF EVERY SITUATION IN OUR LIVES BECAUSE HIS LOVE FOR US NEVER FAILS—and it is new every morning.
