Inspiration for Dimensional Doilies

Some of the first dies ever to hit the market were doilies.  They gave you a symmetrical base to put your card elements on and they simply frame your creation and draw your eye inward.  By now you probably have many flavors of doilies in your stash.  These doilies are different.   With one pass of the die, three identical motifs are created.  These motifs have perforations and slits on each edge.  When the perforations are folded and the slits are intersected, it creates a round doily of 6 to nine pieces that has a secondary filigree layer.  The texture, dimension and pure femininity they add to a card front is gorgeous.

This collection is full of rims and the ability to create shadow layers, each die gives you several options.  Whether you like an intricate layer or the solid layer, the choice is yours!

My Card For Today

I’m tickled to introduce all four of the dimensional doilies :-)

I’ve layered two in each card and you can see individual doilies displayed by each Creative Team member.
Here I am showing:  S4-1059 Timeless Grace Doily and S4-1055 Starburst Petal Doily

I wanted to show the effect when you layer two doilies.  It gives a very pleasing depth and dimension and because the doilies are shaped differently, they are easily staggered so that you can see the layers beneath.

What size card can you make? Can you make an A2 size? Love the look.ReplyCancel

    • Becca FeekenApril 13, 2020 - 9:23 am

      Hey Jane:

The doilies are about 5.5″ all the way around, so for an A2 you might look to do a half doily. The starburst petal is a smaller doily is you can probably get down to about 5″.

      I hope this helps!

You are so creative and I love that you challenge us in how we employ your dies in our card making! As usual you can use in dies tandem with other doilies as you did. However, looking at the display it seems as if you could also cut the pattern and overlay it over the solid one. I wonder if you could alternate designs in same doily. Looking forward to seeing what your creative team did. Everyone keep well and happy.ReplyCancel

Amazing Paper Grace April 2020 Die of the Month - Pop-Up 3D Vignette Typewriter - learn about this die at www.amazingpapergrace.com/?p=36020
You may have well guessed that I am a lover and a collector of typewriters. In the picture below I’ve photographed a real antique with the paper antique and I can’t tell you how much joy that gives me.  The typewriter is a vintage icon of our civilization and our march towards print freedom and in recent years, a collector’s item.  Typewriters are far from being a relic of the past!  I thought by creating a dimensional typewriter with paper coming out of it, it would give you the perfect place to stamp what you want.  Introducing, Pop up 3D Vignette Typewriter.

Some links may be affiliate links, buying products through these links generates a commission at no cost to you.

The typewriter goes together just like all other 3D Vignettes, yet it is open at the top.  It still folds down flat so that you can mail it!  This die set comes with die-cut word inlays yet you can stamp your message on the front page or all the pages.  There is lots of inspiration from the Creative Team today, so be sure to jump through all the links at the bottom of my post.

My Card Today

I peeked this version of the typewriter earlier but I got a few questions on it, so I decided to highlight it on my post today.  I love all the colors of the typewriters I’ve seen so far, but I knew I wanted to do one in gold.
Amazing Paper Grace April 2020 Die of the Month - Pop-Up 3D Vignette Typewriter - learn about this die at www.amazingpapergrace.com/?p=36020

Many asked where I got the words from. I simply reached for a set of letters I have in my stash – any letters will do – die-cut or stamped.  One of my mantras is that “words matter”.  Whenever I’m speaking to someone or writing a text or email, I carefully curate my words.  Spoken words can bring such comfort or can absolutely turn the light on if the right word is used.  Once spoken, they are lovely to reference but also can’t be erased.  So stating that words matter, I thought it appropriate to follow up with good words :-)

Someone else asked how long it takes to put the typewriter together. The answer is, it depends.  It depends on how detailed you want to be.  A 3D Typewriter will probably take about 35-40 minutes the first time around and then when you’ve figured out where everything goes it will likely take 25 minutes.  Now if you are going to add the key rims on every key, it will take quite a bit longer but most people will only want to scatter a few of those little ovals across the front.  On the sample above, I thought it would be cute to drop a pearl into every key rim.  Change it up!  Do it different every time!

I wonder if these Spellbinder dies (So Many Sentiments Etched Dies and/or Even More Sentiments Etched Die Set) can be used to cut out a message on this lovely typewriter – bet you thought of that already. I can see the little basket you created here (or typewriter decorated small bag) at Christmas as favors on dinner plate wishing guests a “Merry Christmas”. Wouldn’t it be fun with a message “Will You Marry Me?”, “It’s a Girl or It’s a Boy” announcement or “Happy Anniversary”, “I baked this for You”! Ah, so many usages and so little time…ReplyCancel

Good Morning, Gracelets!  Sometimes it’s hard to keep a die under wraps.  I’m so happy to reveal this one because it’s so darn cute.  I’m a vintage typewriter collector and I thrilled to be adding a paper version to my stash.  I can’t wait to start making them and I already have friends that have said if I’m sending a card, this needs to be the one. Please check out the video below and I’d love to know what you think, welcome the Pop Up 3D Vignette Typewriter.

I’m calling this a half vignette because the top is open.  As always, this little diecut wonder folds flat so that you can tuck it into a small catalog envelope and mail it off.  Although I’ve included die cut sentiments, it’s just waiting for the stamp of your choice to grace the front.  I have to say that this has been one of the most delightful projects I’ve ever worked on.  It took months for this little darling to come to light but it is rich with details.  Just remember, you don’t have to use every die cut or get as detailed as I do in the samples and videos.  I just wanted you to have as much as I could fit – use what you want.

How-To Video

You are a talented, creative designer, Becca. This is amazing/incredible/phenomenal/marvelous/etc.! Love the intricate details of this design and composition. And of course, my favorite of your techniques is 3D elements/cabinets and elegant shapes. However I have to admit initially I was literally shocked, surprised, and, finally, pleased when I saw first view of the APGDOM for March. So totally unexpected of what I have come to expect from you; and yet, familiar – reminiscent of era gone by, detailed, soft form, etc. I am anxiously awaiting my package this month!!!!

To me this composition is an orderly arrangement of visual cues and elements to direct a viewers’ attention to the card’s message – card makers goal for the recipient. Simple but so effective. Recently I have seen and entertained buying several typewriter dies/stamps; but, as usual, you have far exceeded those and produced a stunningly beautiful die set, which I feel, far exceeds anything on the market. Keep surprising us Becca – we need a shake up now and then.ReplyCancel
