Hi there blog friends!  How about all the ideas you are getting from the Waltzingmouse Design Team for fabulously cute and quick gifties for the upcoming holiday season?  I’m astounded by what’s running out of the creative faucet – ideas I haven’t seen before.  Well, today is the last day of the Waltzingmouse Stamp of Approval Parade and another trinket.  Don’t you just love the smell of the holidays in the air?  When I’m in the craft store and run past one of those cinnamon brooms — Mmmmmm!  Let me linger on the candle aisle — yummy!  The other day I ran past some scrumptious potpourri that somehow made it into my bag.  I decided to make a potpourri holder that would be small enough to give as a gift and open enough to let the sweet fragrance out.  This is a little bit on the small size but holds a lot of potpourri – it’s 2.5″ wide by 2.5″ deep by 4-1/4″ tall (not counting the knob).

Did you peek inside to see how I made it.  Not very hard.  I stamped four of the tags, side by side with just a skosh of space in between them and allowed 1/2″ on the top and bottom of my stamping.  Then I went back and scored in between each of the four motifs to make the sides of the boxes.  Once scored I went back and cut the ovals with Spellbinders Classic Ovals LG.   On the back side I cut four pieces of red screen which I glued down with ScorTape along the top and the bottom.  (By the way, I was so intrigued with these colored screens that I picked up several colors from my quilt store – the simple option is to pick up plastic canvas, it will work just fine).  Just to make the inside pretty (can’t you tell I’m a seamstress?) I glued down an strip of contrast paper at the top and bottom of the inside just to cover up all my ScorTape and the raw edges of the screen.

Glue then goes along the entire bottom and along one side, which is then joined to make the box.  Then I constructed a top and a bottom from my favorite box method.  With a 4-5/8″ square, I scored at 1/2″, 1″, 3-5/8″ and 4-1/8″  then turned 90 degrees and scored at the same increments again.   This makes a  strong doubled walled bottom and lid.   Here’s what the top and bottom look like before after you score and before you adhere.

My box seemed so lonely that I made a tag to along with.  I simply used the same tag stamp and cut it out with Spellbinders Classic Ovals LG then cut the outside of the tag with Spellbinders Small Labels and backed the tag with Spellbinders Labels Twenty Three.

BEAUTIFUL, Becca!! When I first saw this, I thought it was needlepoint canvas died with Distress Ink. If I can’t find these canvas squares (Joann’s is the closest thing to a quilting store we have), I may try the needlepoint canvas. It keeps me busy finding the little things you use that do not come from the crafting section of my local Joann’s, Michael’s and Hobby Lobby! Such delicious inspiration and innovation… “Thank you” seems inadequate but it is the best I can come up with. Thank you, thank you, thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Sandy MNovember 4, 2011 - 9:44 am

Becca, fabulous potpourii box. While I was reading your directions I couldn’t help but think how this would look with one of those little fireless candles inside rather than the potpourii. I know they are small but 3 on a windowsill would be pretty or maybe 5 or 7 on the mantle. One of the bunch could hold the potpourri so there would be a great scent and lighted boxes too.ReplyCancel

Hi there blog friends, welcome to Waltzingmouse Stamp of Approval Parade (SOAP) – Day 3.  Waltzingmouse Stamps releases stamps every other month to give you a chance to play with them before the next release.  On the off month, we show you how the stamps can be utilized for projects as well as cards.  This month we’re doing a Christmas Themed parade that includes some of  the existing Waltzingmouse Stamps as well as the ones put out in November.  Today my project is a simple one, I’ll call it frugal because I’m repurposing something from my craft room.  This is a Holiday Tic-Tac-Toe set that packs nicely for the car.  Give it to the kids and it will keep them occupied for a while with this endeavor that some of us old timers would call “vintage”.  I guess I’m telling my age if I tell you that me and my siblings played for hours at Tic-Tac-Toe, Hang Man, Connect the Dots and that triangle paper football.   Yep, that’s what kids did before Nintendo, lol!

For this project I took a plastic container and adhered my seasonal background to the top.  For the playing pieces I cut circles with Spellbinders Classic Circles and dropped them into the containers.  Although I could have gone farther, I want to be able to change this for various seasons and holidays so I kept glue to a minimum.  Had I wanted permanence, I would have filled the playing pieces with sand or such and glued them closed.  Instead I filled the pieces with quilt batting that I cut into circles.   As it is, this makes for a very quick project – able to be done within an hour.  Since it came from my craft room, I don’t have the packaging, but the organizer is under $5.00 full priced and of course $2.50 with a  50% off coupon at Michaels.

There were nine clear little containers in the organizer so I picked two motifs and put one of each side of each of the little containers.

SUPPLIES I USED
Stamps:  Waltzingmouse Stamps Seasonal Remedies, Nordic Winter,
Paper:  The Paper Company, Bazzill – Ruby Slippers, Neenah Classic Crest Cream 80 lb Cover
Ink: Colorbox Chalk Ink – Dark Read, Chestnut Roan,  Ranger Distress Ink – Vintage Photo, Brushed Corduroy,
Accessories
: Bead Storage Container – Michaels, Spellbinders Standard Circles SM, Clear Embossing Powder, ScorTape,

It’s never too early for a little Christmas Inspiration!  Be sure to peek in to see what the rest of the designers are up to!!

What a cool idea Becca. I made a set a couple of years ago too, but I made the pieces of wood and just stamped images on them and made the plate of wood too, that I painted the squares on, and then gave it all a bunch of clear lacquer at last, and it still works just fine, when we pull it out every christmas, but this one can be used all year long, and is soo easy to breing anywhere, you´ll need a little something to kill a little time for the kids. And it looks stunning, as your work always do.ReplyCancel

Oh, how fun, Becca!! And yes, I too am old enough to remember the non-Nintendo days … and riding in the backseat of a car for HOURS with my siblings [once all the way from NY to Miami] without a DVD player OR even a car radio! GASP, we had to play CandyLand on a regular ol’ board and hope Dad driving didn’t stop suddenly, as then our gingerbread men-markers suddenly played Chutes’N Ladders instead, landing at the bottom (or top!) of the board. Fun for us was when the back of the station wagon’s seats were folded down and Dad put a mattress back there. Somehow, we all survived (even a head-on collision) without being seat-buckled OR in car seats.

Thank you for sharing your inspiration with us!

    Fondly,

Brilliant! This is a great gift – fun, looks terrific and it’s practical, all at the same time.

I’m pleased to have enjoyed the computer era, but also have fond memories of playing games like X’s and O’s back in much simpler times. My friends and I whiled away the hours playing board games & kids card games; and the perennial favourites of Tag, Hide & Seek, and Stando. They cost almost nothing and kept us occupied for hours. I feel fortunate to have enjoyed both eras.ReplyCancel

Okay, call me crazy but, I would not let my kids touch this…it’s TOO PRETTY, heeee! I would be all like, “Don’t get it sticky!”, or from the front seat of the car, “You didn’t lose any of the pieces did you?” hahaha What an adorable use of the Nordic Winter set! Amazing creativity, and a gift full of pure charm!ReplyCancel

VERY good idea. –not just creatively artistic, but we need to teach our children to entertain themselves!! Our children are grown but occasionally we play these old games that still allow for interaction and conversation!

What a wonderful project! This Tic-Tac-Toe set is so pretty, I think it’s nearly too pretty to be used for playing with it. But I’m sure your kids like it and are proud to have such a unique set.

    Kind regards
