I procrastinated custom coloring my own seam binding until I realized, I could do it my frugal way and have a custom color, ready to go on a card in about 5 minutes.    Oh, the best thing about it was that I used what I already have, in fact, I used some of the things in my studio that have been begging for me to justify their original purchase.    You know how that goes, lol!!  In fact, I can’t think of a more frugal way to expand your ribbon collection without having to run to the store!

When seam binding hit the scene and people were custom coloring it with various dyes I thought, that’s not for me.   Oh yes, I had the basic seam binding colors because it’s inexpensive and lasts forever, but banish the thought of making my own.  I don’t like to get stains on my fingers plus I’m a tad impatient – waiting all night for it to dry was not for me.  Plus I thought, don’t I have enough ribbon colors? (note I said colors, not ribbon, lol!)  That’s the dialogue that played through my head until one day I did need a custom color.  Oh my, it was like pulling teeth.  Well, there’s no turning back now.

So take a peek and see why I’ve become such a fan of custom colored seam binding – you won’t believe how easy it is.  So many of you have had questions about this and what it is, so I took a break to whip up a video for you.  (By the way, the rose colored piece of ribbon on the right side in the picture above is the piece I dyed in the video.  Youtube and my video camera just don’t catch the vibrant color but you can see it here.  It’s one of my favorite colors!)

Thanks for peeking in today!!

    Hi Becca,

I keep a roll of the rayon seam binding on my desk and whenever I use glimmer mist or maya mist on a project, I use a yard of the seam binding to clean up the mess afterwards. I get my seam binding a bit damp then use it like a rag. Love the soft color it gives!

I haven’t as yet used the seam binding but it is on my wish list.
I wonder what it would look like two tone…say pink and blue. it has so many possibilities. Maybe a rainbow effect.

That’s very cool bit. I must see if I can find that seam binding here in the frozen north land. I really liked your little iron too. Funny isn’t it. I have no problem getting out the big iron for card ribbon. But when it comes to ironing the laundry, it just seems like such hard work. LOL. Thanks for sharing this info with us. Great video! Glad you made it over to the dark side with those of us who custom color…bwahahaha!!!

I also like to color mine with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist. I put the ribbon in a large zip lock, spritz the mist where I want it, close up the bag (don’t worry about sealing it) and scrunch it all up. Then I let it dry on its own or dry it with a blow dryer if I need it ASAP. The fun thing about this is that you get the glitter from the glimmer mist AND there’s no using your hands!ReplyCancel

    Becca –

I just finished having the biggest laugh. When I started watching the video and you brought out the tintz, I looked at them and said, hmmm. I turned around and looked on my messy table where I keep all my re-inkers and sure enough, I had 4 bottles of the same stuff you had in probably the same shades! Like you, I bought them ages ago (like years) on clearance and have never used them! So your video was most opportune and I had a wonderful giggle. Although I think my husband thought I was losing my mind – LOL!
So thank you for another wonderful video. And to think I have everything I need for once – LOL!

Thank you Becca! You make me laugh – I recently bought some of that white Hug Snug seaming binding and have been trying to color it. Thank you for the tips on how you have been doing it. I’ll try this. I was using Copics – re-inkers and dropping in drops in a plastic bag and scrunching it, but not happy with how it was turning out. Comes out dull looking, the shiny look of the seam binding seems to go away with how I was doing it. I’ll try the technique you used, but will try Distress reinkers I have. • Charlotte ZweigoronJune 19, 2011 - 1:33 pm

I am thoroughly enjoying all these tips. My frugal tip has to do with all the little Stickles, Distress Stickles and, yes, even my 20 year old Scribbles that I am still using. I found an old two-level, spinning spice rack at the thrift store for 25 cents. It was harvest gold so that should tell you something about its age!

Originally, it was to be used when I am working on miniatures because it put my project at a height where I didn’t have to bend over my crafting table and I could turn it to get at my project from different angles. All that changed when I started paper crafting in earnest!

I keep a supply of packaging styrofoam we have gotten with items we have purchased over the last few years…just in case I’d need it some day. I pieced together several “slices” about 1 inch thick to fit the bottom of my spinning rack and, after making the appropriate sized holes (larger hole with small hole at the bottom to fit caps properly), I glued the puzzle-like pieces to the bottom shelf on the rack. (you cannot cut one to fit the whole circle and get it in… the support posts get in the way and the one from the thrift store had screws that were so rusted I could not take the posts off.) You can only use the outside edge of the circle very effectively. I use the interior of the circle for the most seldom used items and just have them tossed in… no special holes.

I kept my Crystal Light oval-shaped packaging, cut them in half and glued them to the top shelf where I keep scissors, x-acto knife, homemade glimmer mists, pen, pencil, small ruler, tweezers, etc. I have one sturdy little box (from a gift) glued on that holds all my little bottles of alcohol inks. There are lots of different sized containers you can fit on the top. I used some pieces of TP paper tubes to keep round bottles of glue in place. Squeeze them all together, glue them to each other and the shelf and you will have so many things right at hand all the time.

Now I have the perfect place to keep those little bottles & frequently used tools that used to clutter up my work space. All I have to do is give it a turn to see everything I have and stick it right back in its spot when I am done.ReplyCancel

Thank you so much for showing how to color seam binding. I have alot of inks and I can go crazy with any color I want. It looked so scary, but you showed the simplicity of it all. (I do that with alot of things, and have to remind myself, I can experiment and make mistakes!! And there are no rules to art) Love it.ReplyCancel

  • Marge (mer)June 19, 2011 - 10:59 pm

Great video, Becca! I too LOVE to color my seam binding and usually use Copic markers — simply dab some on the inside of a baggie (I like the snack sized ones) and then I spritz with Colorless Blender and seal it up and squish it all around to coat it well. If it’s not dark enough, I use a bit more color until I LOVE it. It too dries lighter and you can definitely do more than one shade, if you like. SOOO fun to play with and the Snug Hug rayon wrinkles sooo easily/beautifully. Because I’m using the alcohol-based markers, it dries very quickly too!!! A little extra bonus!!! ;-)ReplyCancel

Hi there friends. There’s nothing like beginning the weekend! I took a break from my focus to finish up another card that had been started but not finished. It simply needed a sentiment. I picked out one that I truly treasure from Serendipity Stamps called No Matter What Road. Doesn’t that just make you nod your head – you know it’s true.  Not wanting to fuss further I simply stamped it down on my design paper.

I used a Martha Stewart Punch All Over Punch to make my cross panel.  With a bow and pearls to finish, I would say this is one of my simpler cards.   I sure don’t mind simple.  Speaking of keeping it simple, my post is very brief because I’m working today.

SUPPLIES I USED
Stamps: Serendipity Stamps – No Matter What Road
Paper: K & Company – Classic K McKenna
Ink: Versafine Onyx Black
Accessories: MS Anywhere Punch – Floral Tile , Recollections Pearls, Ribbon, Prima Flowers, Leaf PIns, Clear Embossing Powder

See you soon!  Be good!!

You know, I actually prefer simple. I make cards for my husband and grown sons, and they are not into “girlie”, with bows and pearls and glitz. I have to work hard to come up with masculine cards. Maybe you can help with that? I sure would appreciate it. Also, I make cards for people at church and family and friends, and I have to produce LOTS. I just can’t spend that much time on each card. Sometimes it’s quantity, not quality, I guess!

Rescued from the scrap pile!!  Isn’t that every piece of paper’s dream?  Here’s my reasoning . . . if I’ve used it before then I must have love it!  I needed a quick card last night so I hit the scrap pile (sits next to the reject pile).  This was the left over from a pocket calendar that I did so I just shaved off the top of the pocket so that I would have a top panel.  The colors already worked, so in my process, that eliminated the hours I take to select paper (I think it is a sickness, lol).  I wanted to showcase this new sentiment (love, love, love) from Quietfire Design called With Heart, the Impossible Is Possible.  It’s so simple, pretty and true and just my luck that I could get it to fit inside Spellbinders Fancy Tags Two (backed with Spellbinders Labels Eighteen).  If that’s a sign of things to come – bring it!!

Not much to detail on this card, I gathered up my lace, seam binding and pearls and voila!!

Yesterday I had a little a-ha moment that makes me almost embarrassed that I tend to be a little bit impatient.  I had to pick up a couple…(okay 12) sheets of paper at Michaels for a project I’m currently working on.  Because it is, what it is, each sheet of paper has to be rung up individually.  The lady in line behind me kept tapping her foot, tapping her fingers, sighing, looking around and then a hrmph.  A minute later, tapping the foot, tapping the fingers, sigh, hrmph. (It became so patterned that I probably could have filled in for her, lol!!).   My goodness, she was sooooo over the top with it that I learned how truly unattractive being impatient is.  I had to bite my lip not to say something to protect the clerk (a very senior lady that is finding herself having to work again).  I’m fortunate, my Michaels is a dream and everyone there is soooo nice.

SUPPLIES I USED
Stamps: Quietfire DesignWith Heart, The Impossible Is Possible
Paper: K& Company, Bazzill
Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black, Vintage Photo Distress Ink
AccessoriesSpellbinders Fancy Tags Two, Spellbinders Labels Eighteen, Lace, Seam Binding, Felt Flower, Zva Creative Pearls

Smooches friends, I’ll see you soon!!  I know I don’t really have to say this but . . . be nice to clerks, we may find ourselves there, some day.

Good Morning Becca–hope you are having a wonderful Friday. I read your incident at Michaels–its true how some people do not understand the meaning of those that need to go back to work. It sounds like this young lady tapping away–might consider taking tap lessons–at least some music coming from her feet might bring a smile to her and learn that sometimes we just need to be a little patient. You bring a smile to my face each day and I am sure to all that visit your web. Have a wonderful weekend—and lets all make some music. RaquelReplyCancel

Becca — I can totally appreciate the time it takes to pick out just the right colors. That is something that I agonize over, and because I have gathered so much paper, there are simply too many choices (not that I’m complaining). To further complicate the matter, I’ve downloaded DP modules from StampinUp and now can print whatever I want or need.ReplyCancel

I am so pleased with your comment about being nice to the clerks. They have to put up with an awful with all of us customers & our coupons! I admire their patience & courtesy, because most of the time they surely are. Occasionally I may get one that is not so much that way, but one never knows what kind of day the person is having. And yes, when I see an older lady behind the register, I can’t help but think “There but for the Grace of God”. In today’s economy, who knows??? And TFS such a lovely card. By YOUR standards, it is much simpler than your usual (I wish MY scraps & rejects should look so good!). Colors are wonderful, and the presentation is just lovely. Have a good weekend. LOL – a quick card for you a little more involved for others. As a part time sales clerk thank you fir your story. So many people don’t allow enough time during their errands and then get impatient when they gave to wait. Might have been fun to ask her what the tune she was tapping out was. Thanks for sharing a lovely card. Just love the pearls over the ribbon and the layered dies. Blessings.ReplyCancel

This card is so lovely. I know what you mean by scrap pile. My family gives me grief sometimes over my inability to throw anything away that might be used on a card or in a craft project! I “rummage sale” in the summer and got really lucky last weekend…found a box full of sewing supplies with about a dozen packages of assorted seam binding and lace in some yummy colors – all for $2. I appreciated your story about the impatient lady. We all need to say a kind word to any clerk or waittress that looks like they might be having a bad day…it could, like the clerk in your story, be us in that situation someday.ReplyCancel

Bekka, I know what you mean. I just hate to see someone “abusing” someone else but in my case it was the Clerk that was disrespecting an elderly customer. It was clear to everyone that the customer was confused and with a little kindness, things would have progressed better than they did. I asked the customer if I could help her and she graciously accepted my offer. Once I got her to her car, I went back into the store and asked for the Manager who came right away. I told him what had happened and that I was no longer going to visit his store because someday, by the grace of God, I’ll be elderly and would hope people would treat me fairly and with respect. My first inclination was to fuss at the Clerk but then, wouldn’t that have just perpetuated a bad situation? I do not know what, if anything, happened but I felt good knowing I tried to behave (as my Moma always taught us) and sent someone on their way feeling OK about people in general. God Bless You and keep you in his loving embrace and thank you for always sharing your beautiful talent.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card, Becca. It’s great you could pull it together quickly. I understand what your saying about your experience at Michaels. I have that happen to me, and we have young checkers at mine. I think what people are annoyed with, is that we are in line ahead of them, and they wish they could just move past us, check out and be on with their “busy” lives. It really just conveys an attitude of “I’m better than you and I shouldn’t have to “wait”. I’m like you Becca, I try not to say anything, check out and leave, and thank God I’m NOT them.ReplyCancel

I have worked in the meat dept. At walmart for the last year. I am sure getting an education on how people behave in the grocery store. You wouldn’t believe how many times I have had to return items to their proper place as people just lay things anywhere, when they decide they don’t want it. They don’t care if frozen stuff is left on a shelf where it will thaw and spoil. Then, they wonder why groceries are so expensive— cause the store has to cover the price of all the spoilage!ReplyCancel

Even your “quick” cards are lovely, Becca! Really like the lace and seam binding bow on this one. Also love the look of the pearl swirl brought up over the ribbon! As for the woman at Michael’s… someday she to will be older and hopefully will have learned if not patience at least manners! Seems we’re all to busy, busy, busy these days to bother with all the little social courtesy’s that make life so much more pleasant. Congrat’s on “turning the other cheek”. Hope that the rest of your day was much more pleasant!

Having spent a large portion of my working life in retail, I thank you on behalf of the clerk. Some folks have an overly large portion of self-importance that sometimes must be addressed. Even as a manager I was threatened by these folks….there simply is no pleasing some people. TFS this beautiful card.ReplyCancel

Scrap pile, indeed!!!! I try to use mine too, even if just a strip across the card. Pretty paper is just that no matter how you use and you do make wonderful use of yours. I’m afraid that impatience is becoming an epedimic. I watch it everyday on our streets and highways, people weaving in and out and not really getting anywhere, but certainly endangering everyone else. And I’m afraid rudeness, without any concern how it will affect the other person, is just rampant. The Golden Rule stills applies or so it should. Kindness not only builds the other person up, it does the same for ones who give it. Bless you for not turning around and staring!!! Tempting though, huh???ReplyCancel

As usual another beautiful – and inspiring card. Love Suzanne’s stamps, I’ve bought several because of you – not blaming, thanking :o)
I hate seeing rude customers – I was taught to be polite to everyone …oops! showing my age again. Growing up in New Jersey with all of our toll booths, my Mom always said hello, thank you & have a good day. We used to tease her “Mom, it’s their job” But, thankfully that sunk into my everyday thinking now. Whenever, I hear a rude customer I always make a point to be a little bit louder when acknowledging the cashier, especially if the person is still standing there (& they usually are). I think make the cashier’s day – who wants to be disrespected?ReplyCancel

What a lucky little scrap – to grow up to be a lovely card. I’ll bet all the other little scraps are green with envy. It’s truly a work of art, Becca.

The only thing worse than putting up with an impatient unhappy customer is to be that impatient unhappy customer. Like ‘they’ say, (who ever ‘they’ are) “Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle” We simply don’t know the background of someone’s life to make them behave poorly. Rejoice it’s not us.

    Big smiles and hugs!ReplyCancel

Hi, Becca! A wonderful “scrap”card! Do you recall the collection name from K&Co.? I love this look and know I PROBABLY have this paper in my stash! lol Knowing the name wd help me locate it. THNX! AND thanks for all the wonderful tuts you do for all of us out here in blog land.
Oh, wanted to let you know that I went to Home Depot and picked up some of the things to mk the peg bow maker. I think it will be wonderful for me as I have hand issues. (I use to actually tie LOTS of beautiful bows among other things at a design shop and sold them—even huge pew bows for weddings, but I had an autoimmune illness strike that crippled my hands almost overnight. SO, I am hopeful that this idea will help me tie bows once again! Very excited. ;-)~ TerryReplyCancel

I had to laugh when I read your note about Michaels. I work there everyday and the impatience can be a more than a little annoying.
The registers keep track of stock so every item has to be done separately. I usually smile when I see them tapping their foot! Being a “paper addict” I particularly enjoy ringing up the paper because I get to see it and touch it! There is so much paper there that I often overlook some of the most beautiful pieces! I find most crafters a patient and understanding bunch! The ones tapping their foot only run in for one item and do not take the time to enjoy “browsing” the store. When the paper is marked down to 10 cents a sheet, I’ve bought 200 sheets! That takes awhile!!!LOLReplyCancel
