Okay, I have to warn you in advance that I had a chance to sit down and play with something lovely that absolutely made my day.  It may seem like a little thing to you, but it’s something I wanted for a long time.  I won’t deny it, I’m going to gush . .  unabashedly . . . and it that drives you crazy, you may want to look away.  I love, love, love die cut papers.  They normally come in a 12" x 12" size though and by the time I cut them down into four 6" x 6" I’m left having to do something really creative to support the reason I would want a piece of paper like that for a card.  Then the Grand Nestabilities came out and die cut paper is all I could see.  Jumping for glee, I knew I would be able to get them in the size I wanted for both cardmaking and mini-scrapbooks . . .yes!!!  So I have a casual card to share today but the Spellbinders Grand Labels Four that I’m using on it is making my heart go pitter patter, plus it’s such an easy design that I know I’ll return to it again.

I started out by cutting the largest Grand Labels Four and scoring it in half.  I took my 6" x 6" base that I’ve layered with a smaller panel and seated the folded Grand Labels Four on top.  Before I glued it down I ran my twill ribbon though a panel I layered with Spellbinders Labels Seventeen and I used the  regular version of Spellbinders Labels Four for repetition.    How simple is that?  I pulled a sentiment from one of this months release at Our Daily Bread Designs called Peace.  Easy, easy, easy.  But wait, there’s more.

Not that anyone ever looks at the back of a card, but I love the unique look that folding the die over the card makes.  I could easily turn this on its side.  Since I pieced my card base from an 8.5′ x 11  piece of kraft cardstock, I needed that label to hide my seam on the back.  I’ll explain that on a later date with a Becca Bit.  In the meantime, I needed to hide the seam on the inside also so a panel of each of the colors I used worked out just fine.

I’ve always been one to reach for the largest template of the set  and I use frames a lot to cover my whole card front.  The Grands will work with this quite nicely.  I just got this one in and the more I play with it the more possibilities I see.

Card Recipe:
Stamps:  Our Daily Bread Designs – Peace
Paper:  The Paper Company, K & Company
Ink:  Ancient Page – Bordeaux
Accessories:  Spellbinders Grand Labels Four, Spellbinders Labels Four, Spellbinders Labels Seventeen, Making Memories Buttons, EK Success Corner Punch, Martha Stewart Twill

Wow!!! Beautiful card Becca. Love the paper. I know I have seen it before but love it each and everytime. Love the Grand Dies and the Calibur, but it is just to expensive. It was either the Grand Calibur with dies combo or the Cricut Imagine. I chosse the Cricut – it does more. Hopefully down the road. I really like the embossing feature that Spellbinders provides thou. Once again – gorgeous card, and I like the really finished look (front and back) that you were able to produce. I am also having fun with your double play. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the opportunity to possibly win.

Don’t forget, I currently have a Double Play blog candy going on the post located HERE.

We have not had rain in along time, so I guess it was really just as welcome even though it rained all weekend.  I think that was just the medicine I needed to do a little bit of clean up work.  I’ve really gotten very good at ignoring the mayhem in my house but I conquered just enough to make me feel productive.  In the meantime, I also am working on finishing up some cards for Our Daily Bread Designs so I reached for the Never Thirst, one of the new sets for September.

I used Spellbinders Lacey Squares again – it seems to go with just about everything.  I paired it up with the Polka Dot Frame.  To give a little bit of contrast around my layers I used the scant edge of the Tulips Borderabilities just to get those tiny scallops.  I rarely sew on my cards, I don’t know why because I love to – well today I took the time.   I finished up with a big bow and a beaded pin.

Card Recipe:
Stamps:  Our Daily Bread Designs – Never Thirst
Paper:  K & Company, Bazzill
Ink:  Ancient Page – Sandalwood and Chocolate
Accessories:  Spellbinders Lacey Squares, Spellbinders Polka Dot Frame, Spellbinder Tulip Borderabilities, Pearls, Ribbon

Thanks for stopping by today.  By the way if you haven’t peeked in on the Double Play Blog Candy I’m offering, the comments are amazing — users have shared their tips on how to be frugal.  I sure thought I was doing good on being frugal until I dived in and began reading.   I love the new tips I’ve picked up.  You can check them out HERE.

It’s totally time for some new Double Play!!   If you’ve played before, you know the rules and I hope you’ll indulge me to repeat.  I do get some questions on this so I do my best to explain it up front.  Incidentally, last time we played Double Play the blog candy winner did not have the words so the bonus went out to another reader – in other words, gather up those words!!  The first word will go up on Friday (9/24) around noon and the last word will go up on Tuesday (9/28) around noon.

Why do I do this?  Many aspects of blogging are one-way.  I say what I think or what’s going on and then I’m off to the next thing.  I’ve enjoyed so much, some of the conversations that have gone back and forth through comments and quite frankly the blog candy post comments are the best.   I’ve learned from reading your thought provoking comments, how very special my readers are.   I really do appreciate your loyalty :-)

So here we go . . .  these are hard times.  It’s almost like a modern day depression and after getting over the shock that the family and I would most definitely have to tighten our belts we put on our frugal caps.  My kids, at their age, have never lived through such an era so they think I’m a bit of a kook.  For your comment this week, finish the sentence, I’m so frugal that  . . .   Maybe you have a tip that will help the rest of us stretch our resources.  Hey, and if you’re in a position that you don’t have to be thrifty, no worries, just leave a comment.

So if this is your first time playing double play, here’s how it works.  The above blog candy is up for grabs.  You can leave a comment on my blog, on this post, once a day until the end of the candy on Tuesday night at 11:00pm (CST), September 28th.    Once the candy ends, I’ll have random.org pick a number that I’ll match to a comment number and that’s the winner.   The winner has 48 hours to reach out to me through my contact page which can be accessed on the top menu portion of my blog.  All I need is for the winner to tell me they want the prize and give me a mailing address to send it to.

Here is the double play item.  Some sweet Prima flowers that didn’t make the past  the "gosh that container is too cute to open" syndrome and one of my favorite Stampers Anonymous stamps that I purchased three times.  I don’t know how that happens, but I sure did it.

Here’s where the "double" part comes in.  I’ll have a "Word of the Day" that will be posted in the box below two times per day for the duration of the blog candy.  The morning word will go up right after 12 o’clock midnight (CST), then it will be erased and a new word put in its place right after 12 o’clock noon (CST).  Pop in quick to visit this main blog candy post and write the word down.  (Don’t put the words in your comment!!)  Collect the words until September 28th, there will be a total of 8 words and if your name is picked for the blog candy and you can give me the 8 words when you claim your candy – you get the Prima Flowers and the Stampers Anonymous stamp too.  If the blog candy winner doesn’t have all the words to win the bonus, the next name I draw will have a chance.   I’ll keep drawing until we have a winner.   Better grab the words and keep them to yourself just in case!!

WORD OF THE DAY

Have even used them and stored little’ treats’ inside for the grandkids; decoate the tube up real pretty, secure one end, insert candy, treat, or whatever and then secure other end shut. Even have turned some into Christmas ornaments; after decorating of course.

These tips don’t sound frugal they sound SMART and great tips (besides recycling).

If you want a real frugal person – a guy that worked with my husband was so frugal – he made everyone use the same bath water (had a waterbill) and floss.

I should really be more frugal than I am ! Certain times, I do better than other times. I was on a kick for a while of saving used coffee filters..when I’d take them out of the basket, they looked like sunflowers !! So , I’ve saved a bunch of them to use for ??? I keep thinking of a poofy flower or something . They were really beautiful. The coffee leaves the center stained brown and the color lessens out toward the edge . :)ReplyCancel

Wow, what a wonderful topic! I’ve already picked up some really neat ideas from other posters. Thanks for putting this subject out there, Becca! You are one AMAZING artist – I am in awe of every one of your projects and thanks so much for giving away such lovely prizes!
When I first read the subject, I immediately thought about how I recently asked my teenage son to cut his 1/2 hour daily showers in half to save on water/heating costs (sigh, a luxury I’m sure alot of teenagers indulge in). Since then, he’s been calling me Cheapo! LOL
I’ll definitely check back often to pick up some other wonderful ideas – have a lovely day!ReplyCancel

Now to answer the question. I didn’t really think I was frugal until I started reading some of the other comments and went – okay – sure I do that too. I’ve cut other cards or saved embellishments that were given to me. In addition, another thing I’ve done is cut the sides of Kleenex boxes and use them as a layer. Recently there is a Kleenex box that has kaliedscopic properties. The one in particular that I cut out was a tree and somewhat Oriental in nature. Check them out!!!ReplyCancel

My kids think I am the queen of frugal. I am so frugal that one time when one of my kids was having a snack on an already cheap brand of paper plate and the next kiddo came along and wanted a snack, I reached over with a scissors and cut the plate in half so he did not have to use another plate! I’m so frugal that I use the cellophane envelopes that I buy pearls or other embellies in to mail cards to people in, or like on my christmas card “Deck the Halls” at Heartfelt Creations. I used one for the “glass” in the window. I also use the cardboard backing that comes in packs of embellies or stamps – usually it has a colored background, and no wording, so makes a nice stabilizer to a card or a layer to something. On my card, “Snowy Thoughts of You”, I cut the “wings” off a pinecone and used them for shingles on the birdfeeder roof. On the birdfeeder, I used the leftover “punchings” from corner or edger punches as the “birdfeed”!

Wow Becca – I don’t always read everyone elses posts, but when you have one of these giveaways where you ask for little stories – I sit here and read them (when there aren’t 500+ to read LOL). These are not only great ‘frugal’ stories, but are really great tips for crafting and recycling too. I must say, that as crafters – I think most of us do the ‘crafty’ saves… however,

I am so frugal, that at a recent wedding, all the wedding favours, napkins and a whole lot of other stuff on the tables had a hot pink organza ribbon wrapped round them. I got almost all of the other tables to save their ribbon if they didn’t need it and give it to me. It was a crafters dream!!! There were different lengths of ribbon in different widths, and people were bringing bags full of the stuff to me. I even got the empty wedding favours and table confetti given to me too…. saved me loads of money!!!

Thanks for the chance to take part and read these wonderful stories and tips…

I have to say first how much I love your creations! Every day is something new and often unusual. Thanks. I am so frugal, I do most of the things everyone who posted before me does. I also save the netting bags that turkeys and hams come in and use them for embellishments on cards and packages. They add great texture for the whole background or you can do strips and use it like ribbon to make bows and loose “roses”…you can also use it like a stencil and lightly sponge color over it to leave a delicate lattice design on the background. Give me a little more time, and I’ll come up with more!ReplyCancel

I am so frugal…..that I save the waxy inner bag from boxes of cereal – then when I want to do some sort of “shake n’ bake”, I use these. If I am tossing chicken with spices and crumbs, or coating potatoes with oils and spices or whatever, I’d rather do it in a bag that I don’t mind just “throwing away” when I am done. No guilt about not washing and re-using it since I’ve already re-used it from its original cereal usage. Who wants to ruin store-bought Ziploc bags for this one-time use?
Have a wonderful day and a truly blessed weekend Becca.

Well to the question I don’t think of myself as frugal because I can spend with the best of them. But I always look at something and see how I can reuse it before I throw it out. Pudding cups for favors or for storing your little goodies when making alot of cards so they are not running free on your table, paper towel rolls make napkin rings cover with DP and some embellishments and there you go. Hard plastic boxes that you get when you buy some stamp sets run them through your cuttlebug woo hoo! I truly could go on and on but everyone has already given all of us wonderful ideas!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

    What a wonderful topic!
I am so frugal, I use the packaging (that really
hard to cut clear plastic from Spellbinders for
example) to cut a 4 x6″ piece and attached 2 small
strips of Velcro (6″ long) to each side and attach my Ranger Foam ink pads. I then store them in an plastic case that was formerly used to storage backup
tapes. I can get 16 foam ink pads on one 4 x 6″
sheet. I also used an address label in between
the top and bottom row on each side, so I know exactly what foam ink pad goes with what distress ink pad.

    Thanks for your amazing blog!ReplyCancel

Hmmm….I never thought of myself as frugal…just cheap! :D Let’s see. I am sooo frugal, I hate the thought of throwing out old clothes…even when they get stained and worn. I wear a lot of t-shirts and they aren’t expensive but still, they are clothes. So this spring I pulled up my sleeves and did a big purge. I must have hoarded about 25 t-shirts that were just way past their ‘wear by date’. I laid them out on the back of an old piece of plywood and got out my roller blade for cutting fabric and started cutting. I took the sleeves and collars off. Then spread them out with front and back on the sides and sleeves in the middle and cut from hem to bottom of armhole. I folded sleeves into one pile and the now separate fronts and back into another stack. When I was done I had lots of rags for painting, cleaning and for DH’s garage work. Even the sleeves made great dusting cloths. My closet is cleaner, they didn’t end up in the landfill and I am saving on paper towels and purchased garage rags. If you don’t have the urge to clean and DH doesn’t have a garage, you could always donate them to a local pet shelter or your mechanic. Everyone wins!ReplyCancel

Thanks for doing this, love your Blog and all your wonderful cards and always enjoy these opportunites to win great stuff. I’m pretty frugal, don’t buy anything reatil without a sale going on, especially clothes(they are soooooo pricey). Buy only craft items on sale or with coupons and my family will tell you I seem to save everything. Paper scraps go with the original in plastic sleeves, ribbon scraps in plastic sandwich bags. I’m especailly thrifty in other things at home, never buy trash can liners in small sizes, reuse ones from the store or if I get too many take them back to the store. I cook all our meals, we rarely eat out, make bread, make two meals at once and freeze. I compost and recycle all I can. All this gives me a little more money to spend on my hobbies.ReplyCancel

    Becca,
I love these double plays! I so enjoy reading everyones comments. This one is great because it is also useful. I didn’t really think I was frugal until I started reading this. I conserve where I can, and recycle as much as possible but my husband is the one that goes around behind me constently turning off lights and such. I am not a collector or a saver per say. I hate clutter. Except when it comes to my crafts. I save tons of stuff thinking ” oh I could use this to……..” and, I usually do use it. Since I started daycare with my twin grandaughters, I started saving the gerber organic food containers. They are clear plastic little tubs (3″ X 2″ with snap on lids and are 2″ deep), perfect for storing card embelishments like brads, buttons etc. I also own a few cricut machines and many carts. I save the outer plastic container of my carts as well as my spellbinders and cuttlebug folder, cut the molded edge off saving only the flat part and run those through the cuttlebug for some great effects to add to cards a scrapbook pages.
I love decorating my home, and thru the years I could not afford to buy designer anything so I learned to dig in and make my own. To this day, I very seldom by any window coverings or comforters. I have become quite the seamstress out of necessity and still make everything.

I love reading all the frugal comments! I guess I have always been “frugal” to some point but in the last couple of years I never buy clothes from a high-end retailer, instead I go to the thrift stores in our area and they sometimes have name-brand items with the tags still on them. Also, I have started making my laundry detergent and I works as well as any of the big brand ones. I save papers, bags, buttons, and anything else that I think I can use either on my crafting stuff or in my other day to day life. I raise a garden and can some items. I guess just getting more back to the basics – which can be a good thing!ReplyCancel

I am so frugal that I have made my own laundry detergent from the recipe found on the Duggar family website. For a 5 gallon bucket it cost about 2.00. I still use my favorite fabric softener so the clothes still smell like they were washed in expensive laundry detergent. My clothes come out just as clean and fresh as ever and I get to save the difference.ReplyCancel

Oh Boy, another double play blog candy! Thank you, Becca, for letting us have a chance to play.
I’m so frugal that the cleaning staff at work bring me the empty paper towel & TP rolls for me to use at home. The paper towel rolls are nice & sturdy. I use them for ribbon & the TP tubes make great pencil holders when hot glued together. I’ve even cut the TP tubes into narrow rings & make bangle bracelets for friends. ~C8>ReplyCancel

Yep, frugal. I’m learning from my daughter. She has started growing her own food and going back to basics.

Unfortunately, I’ll probably not have a wack at the double play, although I’d love too. My husband thinks I’m on the computer too much as it is and I’ll never get to check twice a day without shall we say….friction lol!

I am so frugal…I save the shopping bags from Archivers and a few others with similar ‘tooth’ to cut up and use in my Cuttlebug. I use a layer along with any paper or vellum I am embossing because it prevents the ‘good’ embossed paper from getting tears in the design from the pressure of the cuttlebug. I can reuse the pieces from the bag more than once, so it goes a long way!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, I love your beautiful creations. Thanks for the chance of winning your lovely blog candy.

I’m so frugal that a couple of nights ago I made an extra tidy tray from a plastic 2 litre milk carton to catch and pour my embossing powder and glitter.
(Think of a tray shape at the base of this if you sit a milk carton on its side handle at the bottom. I’m not sure if US milk comes in this style of carton, but maybe your OJ does though?)

I cut below the lower end of the handle side of it, cutting a tray about an inch deep from the part of the side below the handle, including cutting through the hollow handle about half inch from the bottom of it, to create a small spout to pour the powder etc. from.
I hope you can follow this without pictures.

Another frugal tip, look for bargains in charity shops.

I recently bought a beautiful party dress in a charity shop for aged 18 months, it cost only £1.00.
My sister looked at me funny at the time as I don’t have a wee girl to wear it.
It was a bargain though as it had a full skirt – a beautiful silk rich wine coloured dress, lined with a matching full organza underskirt and the cream of the crop was the to die for 3″ wide dark wine proper old style lace trim, turned out to be about 2 meters in length approx’ when I’d unpicked it. I’d have paid probably at least three or four times more just for this lace than I paid for the whole dress. I still have the fabric from the dress too to create ribbons or flowers or whatever.
I’ll share more frugal tips next time.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, I have to admit that I had a little trouble finding my to where to blog for this double play. I finally clicked on the right spot and yippee!!! I have to admit that I had a lot of fun while I was lost, looking at other items you have made.
I haven’t been blogging lately but am felling better and could not resist this subject. I am so frugal… that I reuse paper towels especially in my craft room!! So often they have been used to just dry off stamps so I set them aside and grab them when I need to clean and they get used two or even three timed before I toss them. Back when I was young I was very very poor and as newlyweds we could not even consider paper towels or napkins. So even though I can afford paper towels now, I want to be frugal for the sake of the environment too! Thanks you for sharing your creativity with us. JoannaReplyCancel

Wow what fun and what great ideas! I’m so frugal….I also cut out or punchout the centers of good cardstock and dp used for layering.
Our recycling center doesn’t take all plastics nor all shapes of particular plastics (no trays) so I’m usually collecting until I can come up with a use for many items. The black plastic trays with clear lids (like from Costco/Sams meals) work great as little greenhouses for planting seeds late winter/early spring. Just poke some holes in the top and bottom for air circulation and drainage. The large yogurt & cottage cheese containers also work as great planters.
Hubby used quite a few heavy plastic (like Gatorade) drink bottles, after cutting off the neck/top, for organizing his nuts & bolts (and other stuff) in his shop. He likes coffee cans too but sometimes they’re too big for the small stuff or just a few things.ReplyCancel

Becca, what a great comment challenge! I’m loving all the previous comments and have gained some great ideas and also found out that I practice some of the same frugal activities. I am so frugal that I after my Cricut mats lose their “stickiness” I roll on a tacky glue that after it dries performs like the adhesive on Post It notes. It really works great and extends the use of the Cricut mats long past their usual effectiveness. I also use old white athletic like socks for dust rags. Just slip them on your hand and dust. I also dry my laundry outside on a clothesline. Living in the sunny Arizona desert allows me to do this almost every day.

I am so frugal that I steam all my vegetables in colanders over one saucepan. I only use one ring on the hob and after heating for about 5 minutes, I turn the ring off and allow everything to cook in the hot steam. I’m so frugal … that I put “frugal” in the name of my blog! :)

Seriously, though, frugality is a way of life for us, so I had a hard time thinking of one specific thing. But I did think of one thing we do that most people think is really extreme – we buy most of our kids’ toys (and gifts) from the thrift stores. We’ve done this since they were born, so they don’t care a bit. We’ve told them many times that they wouldn’t have nearly as many toys – or as nice – if we had to buy them in the regular store. (Of course, we’re picky. We don’t buy broken toys.)ReplyCancel

I re-use pizza delivery boxes covered with scrap paper to store kits I haven’t made yet.
I re-use fancy jelly glass jars to make small fairy gardens so that I can use up all my scraps and images.
I’ve also learned that almost any leftover can be made into a burrito if you add fresh grilled onions and mushrooms.
    Thanks!ReplyCancel

I am so frugal that I also cut buttons off from clothing before throwing them away. When doing dishes, instead of filling the sink up with hot soapy water, I wash out the biggest item that needs washing and then fill that up to use as my “dishpan”. It’s definitely a BIG water saver, and possibly liquid soap saver as well.ReplyCancel

Thanks so much for the opportunity to win such wonderful blog candy! After reading all the “frugal tips” I have to admit that I am more frugal than I thought I was because I do a lot of the same things that others have written about! Saving paper scraps to use for punch shapes, bits of ribbon for other projects and cereal boxes for times that call for chipboard ~ not sure if it’s frugal or just common sense!

    Great candy Becca! As usual!!

I’m so frugal that I never throw out small slivers of soap, I put them all into a refillable dispenser. It lasts forever if you keep adding soap. I also never throw out glass candles after they’re burned out. It takes a bit of doing, but you can get the remaining wax out and reuse the jars for storage. FInally, I work at a university so there’s never a shortage of paper and packaging for reuse in crafting if you keep your eye out for it!ReplyCancel

I am so frugal that I save every little scrap from card-making. I cut them into very small pieces, triangles, lop-sided squares and lop-sided rectanges, using scissors. I try to stick to 3 or so solid and/or patterned papers. I glue them to a cardstock background with my favorite Scotch 3-M quick-dry adhesive. Then, I run this through my Cuttlebug with an embossing folder. Then it’s layered with one or two layers onto a base card. Sometimes I take an ink pad and rub it across the card, and it sticks to the higher, embossed parts, to give it a really cool look. At Splitcoaststampers.com, I think they call this the Serendipity technique. Mine always seems to look different than theirs. I don’t remember if they use the ink on top or not. No two cards end up alike, and it’s sort of a Zen thing to just sit and glue the little shapes onto a black or other background of cardstock. And you wouldn’t believe how lovely these are, and all with my “free” scraps.ReplyCancel

Reading a lot of the posts I fit in with all these ladies in being frugal. Have you ever printed something and find you made a mistake? Well I put those sheets aside and the next time I need to check placement on a page to print or just testing something I will grab those sheets. Doesn’t matter that something is printed on the backside as there is still one side that is able to be used. All scraps leftover from my papercrafting is set aside by size and color. I used to shop in thrift stores often, but once I started my family, I found that hand-me-downs were a great way to get a bunch of clothes for the kids-for free! In fact, by the time my daughter was born (27 years ago), I had been given enough clothes for her first three years!! OK, OK. Yes, they were BOYS clothes, but once I knew she was a girl (sonograms-are you kidding me?) I did manage to collect some girl stuff.

It worked out great until my second child was a boy, and my second husband was HUGELY offended when he saw his son in a pink sleeper! That’s when I started shopping the clearance racks, and boy when I found bargains, I bought lots of clothes in several sizes larger than the kids wore.

My kids are grown now so they are on their own in the clothing department, but God has blessed me with a granddaughter, and once I knew what she would be ;) I started hitting the clearance racks for her. A couple years ago I hit a big bargain at Penneys and found separates for .87 each. Needless to say, I bought enough in various sizes so that she is set until size 6. Her mom is very happy, because she knows she won’t have to spend much money on kids clothes! I must admit that recently I bought a couple of clearance coats for her-in the boys section!ReplyCancel

More reasons I am so frugal…
I made my own hand made paper a few weeks ago, but I didn’t have the paper making frame so I improvised, I used a pizza baking tray with the holes in the bottom, this was bought especially for this, but it only cost around £1, I used an old wire splash guard the kind you use for over pots to keep the back of the cooker clean, inside the pizza tray to drain away the water from the paper pulp, the scrap paper I used to make the pulp was waste paper from paper punching, I added into this a few bits or snippets of herbs, leaves and petals from my garden and pulverised with my hand blender in an old jug. The paper turned out to be a huge round sheet when it dried, but it turned out so pretty I’m definitely going to do it again.
I used this to make 3D roses and backing paper over 2 bases for a wall-hanging using 2 layers of cereal box card, all cut with one of my Nesties frames, glued together then added a printed paper from my computer, on the back. I added a bit of Distress Ink to the edges of the hand made paper after the shapes were cut out, I stamped onto the hand made paper, it turned out not too bad considering it was textured but it added to the look… very arty, I thought. I added a small bit of stamped and cut out grunge paper and a small piece of jute to join the two base shapes together at the back, creating a pretty wall-hanging for my friends birthday. It cost next to nothing and I got a lovely feeling of achievement, so it made me smile too when I was posting this to her.ReplyCancel

  • BernieSeptember 25, 2010 - 3:32 am

I’m so fugal… I do nearly everything already mentioned. My DH says I am shameless as I will ask people for what he calls their trash. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I ask and almost always the answer is yes. I got lumber that was being tossed out and put up all the shelve in my craft room. I built myself a 6′ X 10′ greenhouse completely out of other people’s trash. Yes I did it myself at the age of 60. It’s not perfect but it functions perfectly. I am to frugal or some say cheap to pay someone to do something I could do myself so over the years I’ve learned a little bit about construction, a little about plumbing, etc. When I get stuck I ask how to do it or look it up.
Becca you are so wonderfully generous. Thank you for the opportunity to win and once again for making it so much fun too.

How’s this for frugal…??? If you boil too much water in your kettle, put it in a thermos flask. It will keep pretty hot and can be used for other hot drinks, washing up or for cooking your vegetables. Even if it needs bringing back to boiling point, it won’t take much electricity or gas to do so. Of course, the really frugal thing is only to boil the amount of water you need in the first place, but……

Love this post! And thanks so much for the opportunity to win blog candy!

I am so frugal (cheap) that I cut coupons every week. I will often purchase coupons in bulk on Ebay for items I use regularly and can store (ex. toilet paper). Last year I bought 10 $1 coupons for $2 and then caught my brand on sale at Kmart. I purchased them there and better yet… the store was given a 25 gift card back for a $30 purchase of that particular brand. I haven’t had to buy toilet paper for a year plus what would have cost a great deal more! It only cost me $17 for a years supply!

I also go to our local grocery on Monday when the perishables are marked down. I can get a gallon of milk for 50 cents and a loaf of bread for a quarter. The expiration date is usually in about 5 days so they have to mark it down! We use those items up quickly so it isn’t a problem.

My grocery monitors my savings on the receipt. It is nothing for me to save 60% on my groceries!

Thank you Becca for the wonderful chance to read all these frugal ideas. I never thought of it that way. I never buy anything at Michaels or JoAnns unless I have a 40% or 50% coupon in my hand. I also use the Duggars recipe and make my own laundry soap. I recycle any usable clear plastic containers into gifts. Save any baskets and fill them with dollar items at Michaels for gifts. I buy used lamps at the local thrift store. I use left over cookie tins to hold my stamps and stamp pads. I go to the library and get the free magazines for crafting ideas.

Love all the ideas. I love yard sales and thrift stores. The best bargain this summer was a George Foreman grill (one of the large ones with removeable trays) — which my husband had been wanting but didn’t want to buy brand new — in mint condition for $2 (can you believe it) at a yard sale.ReplyCancel

Becca, When my children were home (we have 6) I was very frugal, but not as much now days! I do, however, recycle/repurpose things! My favorite is – when my change purse zipper broke, I began using the tube from M&M Minis for my change! It is just the right size for quarters, on down! Best of all, when the lid finally breaks I recycle the plastic and have to buy more M&M’s! (What a hardship – LOL)! Thanks for the opportunity to play again – it’s been awhile! Hugs, MagiReplyCancel

I am so frugal that I save the clear plastic or acetate from packaging. This makes great “windows” in stamped images of vehicles or windows in houses, etc. Adds realizm to the stamped image. I just use my trusty Scotch 3M quick-dry adhesive, which works on paper, plastic and metal, to glue it behind the windows that I have cut out with small scissors or X-acto knife. These also make great invisible spirals for the spiral cards, with butterflies popping out. I’ve also used long rectangles, about 1/2 in. wide, to glue flowers or butterflies onto them, and they pop out of an explosion box. Bend about 1/2 in. down on each end, one for attaching the item, and one for attaching to the inside of the box.I don’t buy those acetate sheets anymore!ReplyCancel

After reading all the posts, I realize I’m a little more frugal than I thought! I do save my scraps into color coded plasic tubs that I got from lunchment. And, I try to cut out a shape from a bottom layer (when I remember!) I also try to keep my stamping area picked up, so I remember what I have. I too, am guilty of buying more of something I already have. When you get older, you forget! I also like to save commercial cards I receive, and use the sentiments I like. I may computer generate, or use my JustRite fonts to create.ReplyCancel

    hi,
i’m back again. i promised i would tell you what i do with my tennis balls. for those that don’t know much about tennis you open a new can every time you play. well, you see that is soooooooooooo wasteful. after a match i try to collect the balls back and put them in my hopper. that’s the container that holds a bunch of balls for practice. after we hit with them awhile when they are truly no good for tennis i send them on to one of a few places. most of them go to schools for the bottom of the chairs. sometimes they go to nursing or senior facilities for the bottom of walkers. since i volunteer at animal control, of couse some go to the dogs there. sometimes when a ball gets hit over the fence when we’re playing a child will get it for us and we reward them with balls, never to young to enjoy the game. since i play at the park, sometimes a passing dog needs a new ball. and of course my dogs get some balls. so there is never an end to their recycling. hey, you can also recycle the can or use it to store your sunglasses when you go to the beach and don’t want to get sand in them. we are even thinking maybe we should just exchange christmas presents the go in a can. the tabs can be pulled off and sent in to places that collect tabs. personally our group saves them for ronald mcdonald house that will soon be built in our city. ok, so i’m not quite bubba gump but i think he was in my blood line. :)ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal…..???? I can’t think of anything out of the ordinary that I would consider extreme to mention. One of the things I have noticed about frugality is it becomes a burden sometimes to others and then moves into hoarding. I have had to cleanup after extreme frugal people who came out of the great depression and it required many hours of labor and expense. So I look at the balance needed to be frugal and yet not be excessive in the frugality. For me it becomes troubling when I open drawers and closets and wonder why on earth I’m saving some things that just requires managing and reorganizing.

I love your work Becca and always look forward to see what your doing next. Thank you for your inspiration.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Well, I’ll give it a whirl. Hmmm … I’m so frugal that I punch little dots from every inch of leftover paper and card.

I have a box full of little dots, every type and colour and use them for adding eyes and noses to faces; creating a dotted line and other places where dots are appropriate.

Yes, it’s fiddley and, at time, I end up with dots stuck on my fingers but, hey, it’s using the paper and card to the utmost.

Anyway, here’s to a chance to win your lovely prize. However, even if I don’t, you might just get a giggle over this frugal idea.

I save plastic shopping bags so I can make scrap paper from them by ironing napkins to it. I tried my plastic wrap and it would not melt! Then I tried my plastic bags and it worked; and the bags are free! I have also saved plastic baby food containers and foil and ….. for crafts. I used to have to rely on found things for crafts because we were so poor. ha ha Now I can’t believe how much I have spent on scrap-booking. But I am at my happiest when I think of something to make form the extra of life!!! And I’ve learned some great things from this blog!!! thanks, joannaReplyCancel

My family has been recycling for years and the local community has a recycling center where you can drop off newspapers, plastics #1 & #2, used motor oil, aluminum cans, cardboard and glass. People sometimes throw things in the trash that can be re-used and I have seen furniture sitting by the side waiting for someone to come along and claim them for their own. We have no curbside pickup so we take everything to the center ourselves. Just doing our part to help the planet we live on.

I also wanted to remark how wonderful all of your cards are and I so envy your talent. Today I made a paper pumpkin with my nestabilities and it took me hours and hours. I’m so frugal….I save envelopes that come in the mail that have the security designs inside. They’re good for backgrounds or punching flowers or what not out of. I also use double-sided tape for most of my card making and cut it the width into 3rds, or only in half if I only need 2 pieces or its really small.
Thanks for the blog candy and this way of sharing tips!! : )ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that…tonight we had a Yabba Dabba Doo dinner! Oh, you hadn’t heard of that? Well, I grew up a block away from my Grandmother’s house, so us kids were there a LOT. Occasionally she would announce that we were going to have a Yabba Dabba Doo dinner. Being a kid all I could imagine was The Flintstones, and watching them eat dinosaurs. Well, THAT was never on our table!! Only years later did she explain to me that a Yabba Dabba Doo dinner was, well, a Dab ‘ll do ya! So in honor of my wonderful, frugal Grandmother, we occasionally have them too. Tonight we opened six containers of leftovers from the past several days, and ate up four of them. Delicious!ReplyCancel

I must say, I really enjoy reading everyone’s fugal tips, etc.
I save and have other family members, save all their old worn out blue jeans; some of which I buy at garage sales for little of nothing and also resale shops and I make purses out of them, book covers, quilts, use them for patching up other jeans and of course I make aprons. Oh, yes, have even turned a pair of jeans into a planter; was rather pretty, flowers growing out of the jeans.

I’m so frugal that . . . I cut out the ribbon loops inside of new clothes. I’m talking about the ribbons that the store uses for keeping the garments on hangers, well if they don’t need to be hung up at home, I cut them out to use on my projects, sometimes the labels are held on with mini safety pins and/or ribbons too which are great to use, it’s like getting crafting freebies :)ReplyCancel

I am so frugal …. when I bake any dessert squares and then remove them from the pan and there are all those scrumptious leftover crumbs left in the pan…I save these in a plastic tub and put them into the freezer. Then when I purchase an inexpensive vanilla ice cream sometime we can use these crumbs as a special topping to make the ice cream seem like a gourmet one!
I keep adding to the tub whenever there are dessert crumbs, and all different kinds often get lumped into the same tub. No matter. The mixture is always delicious and a treat!ReplyCancel

For today, my comment would be that i’m so frugal, i tend to want to keep every scrap of paper that I have left over from a scrapbooking page or card. No matter how small, you never know when you might need that exact size. Also, with my scrap cardstock I try to think of ways to repurpose them and use them up. So for example, I have a tag punch that I use to cut out tags so I have a assorted color stock of tags to use for my scrapbooking pages.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that I still use the 25 year old muslin nappies I used for my son. They were washed daily when he was a baby, but when I no longer needed them for him, they made superb window cloths, they washed like a ribbon, had great absorbency and the dry ones buffed the windows beautifully, when they started looking a bit grubby after a number of years of window cleaning, I used them for rags in my craft room. I still use them for cleaning paint or ink off my craft mat or for drying my rinsed paint brush on. I wash them by hand in the sink so I don’t stain anything else when they look like they have a lot of heavy ink on them, and although they now are very stained with multiple ink colours, they still work so I don’t use so many paper towels or wet wipes.
I also keep buttons and ribbons from old clothes, ribbons from chocolate boxes etc.
I use crafty CD-ROM’s to print pretty papers or I design my own with stamps inks and paint. I scan them if I particularly like how they turned out, so I can print them again when I want, or I alter them in a graphics program to change the colours, size or maybe add words if I don’t have a stamp that says what I want.ReplyCancel

Thanks again Becca. And what a great idea. It’s such fun reading all the tips and finding that so many of us think along the same lines. We live in such a throw away society and my parents and grandparents always used to say, ‘Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves.’ My grandmother had a walk in cupboard which was an absolute goldmine of salvaged items. She always seemed to have exactly the thing you needed. The knitting needles may not be a pair, but would always make a pair lol. I get from her my habit of saving rubber bands, safety pins, pieces of cord and other things that drive the family mad at times :o)

I’m so frugal that I cut my own hair most of the time and rope my dear husband in to even up the back lol! Not sure whether it’s straighter before or after he takes the scissors ;o)

I am so frugal that when I’m using my expensive tube watercolors, I keep a large sheet of white tissue paper nearby. When I change paint colors, before rinsing my brush in water, I brush lines and marks on the tissue paper. Eventually, I have a plaid of otherwise decorated piece of tissue paper that I use for collage or gift wrap. I usually rubber stamp some flowers, words or other images onto the tissue paper between the marks, and make a matching card by using some of the tissue paper.ReplyCancel

I learned how to be frugal from my extraordinary mom. She grew up during the Depression and knew how to “make do”. She would buy wool coats at the end of the church rummage sale, when items would be $.25. Then she would take all the seams apart, turn the wool over so she could use the “new” side, and make one-piece snowsuits for all of her children and anyone else in the church who needed one. When her children and grandchildren grew too big for snowsuits, she made the coats into teddy bears. She is one special lady!ReplyCancel

Hi Becca – I don’t think I’m as frugal as I could be. I never buy any clothing unless it is on sale. If it’s not, it will be in a couple of weeks and if I really need it, I can get it then. Socks and jocks and never purchased unless they are on sale. That’s a definite! Once old Towels/tea towels are old and worn out, they are then cut up to use for dusters and rags. Thanks for the chance to win your generous blog candy. I have been enjoying reading everyone’s frugal tips. Many of them I do myself.
I am so frugal, that I am still using the bath towels that I started my marriage with 30 years ago. First, we used them until they were looking a bit shabby. When I “retired” them from the bathroom, and replaced them with new, they were delegated to be used for showering when we’d go camping. They still worked, but were ragged along the edges. If they accidentally were left behind in the shower building, no great loss. At least I wasn’t losing my “good” towels. As they’ve gotten even more worn, and to the point of being a little embarrassing to use even as camping towels, they’ve gone into a box to use as rags for so many different purposes. Right now, I’m using some while training our puppy. They wipe up “accidents”, dry wet paws, and dry him after his bath. These well-worn towels also make great car-washing rags. I just launder them again, and put them back in the box for the next time I need a rag.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I am so frugal that I save the scraps of white bar soap from the bathroom and use them to mark my lines for sewing projects, especially hemming my pants as I am only 5 feet tall and nothing fits!
I also save the heavy brown paper insert inside some wrapping paper. I like to cut strips in long lengths that are about 4-5 inches wide and border punch both sides to wrap around a freshly baked loaf of banana bread that has been previously wrapped in wax paper. Finish that with a beautiful ribbon, which of course has been saved from something else.
    It’s fabulous to be frugal!

I’m so frugal I caould never bear to part with $15 or so for an embossing buddy (antistatic thingy). I finally realised they just have cornstartch in them so yesterday I made an embossing buddy from a 6 inch circle of old fabric, filled it with talcum powder (cornstarch based) and tied it up with a rubber band. It works! It is especially good for white embossing powder on a dark background, I often was unhappy with the results I was getting previously.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that..I buy Christmas wrapping paper on clearance after Christmas. I refuse to buy special birthday paper, just ask my kids because in their lifetime they have never received a gift from me that WASN’T wrapped in Christmas paper.

To take it a step further, I buy their next-years Birthday and Christmas presents at the After-Christmas clearance sales because their birthdays are within a few months after Christmas. I do the same for gifts for other friends and relatives as well- every holiday is followed by a clearance sale, and that is my time to shop for the future.

I’m not sure they will continue this tradition, but once I’m gone they are going to have to figure out what to do with all that Christmas paper, right after they discover a hidden stash of neatly-wrapped gifts from their dearly departed mom in the back of a deep closet!ReplyCancel

    Time 4 another fugal tip:
Each week I sit down and plan what meals I want to makefor the following week; then checking my pantry to see what items I need and don’t need, I make out my grocery list; (no need buying unnecessary items if you don’t have to.) I then go through to see what coupons I need. Never, never go grocery shopping on an empty tummy, or with kids along or husbands. You are more apt to do inpulse buying; buying things that really aren’t needed, and go as early in the mornings as possible…….less crowded.
I always make extra; 1 to eat now and the other gets put in the freezer for another time. I also buy in bulk which also saves many trips to the store. It’s all in the planning.
If you don’t have the room to store bulk items, talk to a couple neighbors to see if they are willing to go in with and divide it up among you.
    Thanks again Becca.

I wait until the seasonal stock at Michaels is marked down to half price or less and buy for the next year.

I also buy new calendars (50 cents at Michaels this week) and cut them up. The small calendars on them are great for cards, too.

  • AnneSeptember 27, 2010 - 7:53 am

This has been such fun, Becca!

I am so frugal that I use white vinegar for most cleaning jobs. It is a great de-scaler if your tap water is hard and removes the limescale deposits it leaves on your sinks, taps and kettle etc. I decant it into a bottle with a screw on spray top, dilute it 50% with water and hey presto – a great window cleaner, tile cleaner and shower cubicle cleaner (but rinse off).

If I have a cold and catarrh, whilst I’m working with it, the mist seems to help clear head and sinuses, and if you forget to use rubber gloves, the vinegar restores the acid mantle to your skin.

In the UK it is really cheap to buy in 5 litre containers (just a few dollars) which last ages :o)

    Hugs

I’m so frugal we use the reverse sides of used letter sized bond paper to enlarge and copy these puzzles every morning…jumbles, sudokus, crosswords… so each of us have our own copy to work with. When we clean out files, the ‘throw-aways’ are stacked in front of the copier for ready use. We always check the reverse side when finished and shred anything of a sensitive nature after use. The stack never gets close to being used up!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I am not sure this qualifies as frugal ladies but here is a tip for reuse that my family has always enjoyed.

I know that your audience here is mostly card crafters, but if there are others out there that also love to sew as well as paper craft I have a little project for all of those jeans that your family has been wearing.
Instead of throwing them out I save them and when I get a stack I cut them up making as many 6″ squares as possible out of each one. I especially like the back pocket area. I make sure I cut the whole pocket out using my rotary cutter. I save these squares and sew them together quilt style. Through the years, my kids have loved keeping these throws rolled and stowed in the trunks of their cars for trips to the beach, or for a picnick. These last forever, can be thrown in the wash, are sturdy and one of the handiest items to keep in your car for those occasions. The pockets when placed randomly on your quilted throw are handy for stowing such items as plastic utencils and such. Even thou my kids are grown and on their own, they still save their Levis so I can make them another throw.

I’m sure someone already mentioned it but one thing I always do is about halfway through a bottle of shampoo or conditioner I add some water and shake well. That bottle seems to last forever because I do that at least once or twice more as it empties out. It works just as well as when it’s undiluted.
Thanks again for sharing your talents and providing us with a great blog to share on!

Hi Becca, I’m always amazed and inspired by your wonderful card designs. One of the things that I’ve done in the past is to use window film on our windows which helped with the electricity bill. I also save the plastic packaging and cut it down to use for help with stamp placement when using a stamp-a-ma-jig. I’ve used plastic mayonaise jars to hold buttons, and wide mouth canning jars to hold embellishment. I’ve cut up old fabric into strips to crochet into a rag rug. And of course, like most, use the coupons at the craft stores, and
occasionally go to garage sales. Thanks so much for offering the Double Play.ReplyCancel

I keep thinking about ways that I am frugal and it all seems so natural for me. When I was growing up in a family of 12 children my Mom always saved the wrappings from gifts. We would iron the wrinkles out of it then reuse for the next birthday. We saved the ribbon and bows too.

A trick that I learned from my sister that I thought was genius. When you buy table linens or sheets etc. they come in these nice heavy plastic bags with zippers. She would put things in them for storage such as rick rack, also sewing patterns fit in them nicely and you can group them together in the bags. I always saved them but didn’t know what to do with them but now I use them for all storage items.

    Have a great day!

In trying to be healthier and more frugal combined, we are doing a meatless day each week. Protien is obtained from beans/lentils incorporated into the meal.

Using coupons allows us to try new brands of items that we like, while ensuring we get the best pricing available for the week.

I am so frugal that I no longer use dryer sheets. I bought some dryer balls (not the Mr. Steamy). I’ve had the dryer balls for years. They get rid of static, and also help speed up the drying time. I like it better, because with allergies, I don’t like the scent of fabric softener or fabric softener sheets.
I also don’t want the chemicals, including petrochemicals that are in them, on my skin. Sometimes they even left greasy spots on some clothing, so I stopped using them years ago. I used a 20% off coupon at Bed, Bath & Beyond to buy the dryer balls, so saved money again.ReplyCancel

We learned to be frugal from our parents who went through the great depression and they passed this stuff down to us..so we always turn off lights when not in a room..don’t flush more that you have too and on and on..You all know the ways we try to economise..we have too these are hard times..
I save rubber bands..any thing that can still be of use..what I can’t use I pass on to the Salvation Army..when we first got married we bought a lot of our furniture from there and we still have one chair that we bought there for $50 that was a lot back then but it was a brand new chair and very well made..to this day it’s still holding up and better made than the rest of our furniture..

Becca, haven’t blogged in awhile. I am always on your site; you and your cards are always an inspiration to me.

I am so frugel that I’ve done most of the tips here. One thing I loved doing was saving really good bathroom tissue rolls. As well as a card maker, I also love to do machine embroidery. I use scrap fabric to embroider coffepots, blenders, toaster, mixers etc. This is then wrapped around the cardboard tube, the ends are glued to the inside and I slide the folded electrical cord into the tube that matches the appliance. No more messy, tangled, and unsightly cords.

I’m so frugal….I rarely buy a box of tissues/klennex, I use toilet paper instead, plenty of it and always on hand. I also rarely buy wrapping paper, unless I can see using it for cards and other things. Since I don’t use it, if I don’t look at it in the store I’m not attracted to a roll/pkg or enticed to purchase it. I mail most gifts, so I just use tissue paper with recycled gift ribbons, no boxes. There are some nice patterned tissue papers for variety or I could stamp on them if I wanted to. More economical and easier to cram into a mailer box. Kids (and spouse) don’t care about fancy packaging anyway : )ReplyCancel

I am so frugal, that I save the silk flowers from flower arrangements for use in my crafting. When our daughter was born, we received a silk flower arrangement as a gift. After enjoying the flowers, I dismantled it, and put the components in my craft stash. Last year I used some of the pink daisies from that baby arrangement, for the card for my daughter’s 29th birthday! I’ve noticed when looking at silk flower stems at the craft store, that some would work well for cardmaking, at less cost than many of the flowers marketed specifically for cardmaking and scrapping.ReplyCancel

I like to think I’m frugal – but I have certainly gained some great ideas from the replies listed above! I re-use the lovely paper handled brown paper bags various gift stores use to put your purchase into. Sometimes a store will use white but most often it is the brown color. If you are careful travelling home with your purchase, you can re-use the bag by decorating it with scraps of lovely scrapbooking papers and make a nice gift tag to match and ……. then you have a lovely gift bag to use for your next gift!

I’m so frugal that . . . I hardly ever buy anything at full price, I know this is a bit of a non-specific answer but it is true to almost everything I purchase. When I go clothes shopping I only really look at the sale rails, I hunt through bargain bins where ever I see them especially for off-cuts at the ribbon market stall and love a good rummage through car boot sales. Also household auctions are a great way to find furniture on a budget and once when I moved I managed to kit out an entire flat for next to nothing.

Thanks for all that you do Becca and your endless amounts of inspiration, I honestly don’t know where you come up with some of your ideas, you’re amazing :)ReplyCancel

What a great topic. I learned so much. Thanks for the chance to win such generous blog candy. I am so frugal that I recycle display boxes from stores. I got three from our local dollar store that they used for displaying Kleenex in small packages. The boxes are all white and the size of a bookcase and they are divided into 24 cubed spaces. I buy plastic baskets (also dollar store) ( 3 for $1.00). They fit perfectly in the cubes. I store all my embellishments etc. They are the envy of my crafting friends since they so neatly store so many things. The baskets are so easy to remove and bring to your work table.

I am so frugal that…this time of year as you take the last items from your vegetable garden (or becuase they are cheaper to buy in the stores), I cut up my green and red peppers, onions and celery and store them in the freezer in margine tubs to use in casseroles throughout the winter. Celery has a shorter life spam in the freezer so use it quickly. With onions, I do it all year long. I hate cutting onions. Since my husband loves onions in his meals, I get him to cut a bunch at a time and put in a freezer bag. Then I can grab some frozen onion quickly whenever I need them. As spring approaches, I make sure the last of the onions are diced and put in the freezer before I lose them.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that…I have cut my husband’s own hair since 1993. I also cut my son’s hair for many years and trimmed my own and my daughter’s bangs and bottom of hair for many years. So, we had very little in the cost of salon services. I have worn my hair long for about 17 years now.ReplyCancel

our family is so frugal that I am currently using the towels that my parents got when they married 50+ years ago. They are a bit thinner now & the color is gastly but the washcloths are perfect to wipe up spills around the house & the bath towels are now pet towels.
We also save holiday papers & reuse them by cutting them down & ironing them out for the next gift, until they are no longer able to even wrap the stocking stuffers. This last Christmas we finally used up a paper I know was purchased in the early 70s. It was so tiny that it was used to cover a peppermint. 40 years for one roll of gift wrap is really frugal. LOL ~C8>ReplyCancel

Sometimes I get wallpaper books (usually for free) and use them for background paper. They sometimes have fabric swatches in them, too, which I also use on my cards.

Well drats….somehow I managed to miss one of the words. Sighhh…

I am so frugal that I turn my underwear inside out and wear it again before I wash them….NOT….just kidding. Now that I have shocked everyone…..

I am so frugal though that I clip my little yorkies myself, well, their bodies anyway. I am afraid to do their faces so they wind up going to the groomer anyway but it isnt nearly as expensive.

Thank you once again Becca. It has been fun reading everyones comments. Good luck to everyone ..ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, thanks for offering the blog candy. I’m so frugal that I save the bows and gift bags that I receive and reuse them. My sister and I just seem to trade gift bags when we give each other gifts. We both save them and reuse them.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca! I’m so happy- I got all the words for the first time! I am so frugal that…..I leave the plastic on the windows in our home that we don’t open in the summertime – my grandmother always said: “what keeps out the cold keeps out the heat”! Thanks again.ReplyCancel

  • AnneSeptember 28, 2010 - 10:14 am

This has been so much fun! Thanks Becca for putting a smile on so many faces :o)

I am so frugal that I bought a pair of old fashioned wooden clothes tongs like my mother and grandmothers used to have (a few dollars) and when the white towel load is about to empty the hot water down the drain, I stop the cycle and take out the towels with the tongs, turn the cycle back to the beginning, and put the next load of dirty clothes in. When that load has run through, I put the towels back in, spin them, then rinse them. Only works with a top loading machine, but it saves several gallons of hot soapy water.

If it is raining and I can’t hang my washing outside on the line, I use those ‘nippy’ coat hangers that hold skirts and trousers, and hang my towels and bedding in doorways to dry. I clip pegs to wire coat hangers and can dry socks and underwear hanging from these. Must be the Girl Guide training for our Thrift badge lol

Thanks again Becca for your wonderful blog :o)

    Hugs
    Anne (UK)ReplyCancel

I am so frugal that I try to get as much out of an ’emtpy’ container as I can to make sure it’s really and truly empty. Others are doing this as well, so I’m sure we all have a lotion container upside down on the counter. Sometimes, I even cut open my plastic tube of eye cream to make sure I get it all!ReplyCancel

Another frugal thing I do. When the pickle jar is empty, I put Arm & Hammers soda in the kitchen drain, & strain the pickle juice ,which is really vinegar, down the drain. Hurray, a freeier flowing drain.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I am so frugal that at my house we save envelopes that come in the mail turn them over, staple them together and use them as note pads.
I save all Christmas bows and tissue as gifts are opened to use next year. It has been many years since I have had to buy new bows.
I also save the Christmas Cards I receive and cut out the pretty parts to make gift tags for next Christmas.
For many years I have wrapped gifts with brown wrapping paper that I stamp on and colour. People expect it now and would be disappointed if they didn’t get hand made wrapping :o)
Thank you for the fun I have had playing your game and for YOU and all of your inspiration and beautiful eye candy each day.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that…when I make apple pies to freeze for use all year, I add a little bit of baking soda to the filling, and can reduce the amount of sugar by half. The baking soda reduces the acidity of the apples, making them sweeter!!ReplyCancel

I also save and use all the little containers embellies come in..ya know the clear plastic ones. sometimes to make “shakers” with..sometimes to cut a shape out of to make a “ghost” type embellie. Run them through the cuttlebug dies and it cuts fine. Most punches won’t cut the plastic but the dies will.ReplyCancel

Thanks Becca….love your Becca Bits! Guess this is considered ‘Bits’ too…when I use pump hand soap I split it in 3 containers and add water…that way there is plenty of soap to clean my hands, but I don’t waste water trying to get excess soap off my hands. I use these pump bottles at my sink kitchen….also great of a squirt to pre wash my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

I am so frugal, that when you can’t get any more of a condiment out of it’s bottle, and you think it’s empty, I’ll add a little bit of water, shake it up, and be able to get one more serving out of it. This works for ketchup, mustard, most salad dressings, etc.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal I use postage stamps (that come on our canceled mail) and use them in my artwork. I also reuse the return envelopes that come with our bills, (especially if we pay them in person). They are great for holding coupons or notes I don’t want to misplace.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I’m so frugal that I reuse aluminum foil loaf baking pans for my Christmas cakes. I only use them for this purpose. I can make as many as 14 cakes at Christmas so it only makes sense to reuse them until they can no longer hold their shape.

I have gotten my husband hooked on frugalness too. I know what costs what where. I won’t run all over the place to get something, but if I know I can get it for $1 or $2 someplace else and I’m going near there anyway, I’ll wait. Now my husband is conscious of what he’s spending where too (and if we can afford it or not! Gotta love that)ReplyCancel

I like to really research big purchases before I buy them. I do my homework searching the net for reviews, speaking to others who have purchased something similar etc. Large purchases on a whim have once or twice caused regret in the past (like our first digital camera which had terrible shutter lag) so I try to wait and spend time on a decision.ReplyCancel

I’m so frugal that when we get done reading our newspapers that we subscribe to, I bring them over to my neighbor across the street that doesn’t subscribe to any of them, and when she gets done with it she uses it for her bird cages.

Thanks for the chance to win your generous blog candy. I have been enjoying reading everyone’s frugal tips.
I re-used containers and bags of all sizes.
Empty laundry soap jugs are filled with fertilizer for the garden. Bags the fertilizer comes in are used for trash. I also compost. Tops of milk jugs are cut off and used when I share plants from my garden.
I have my family & neighbors trained to save all their flower pots for me in the spring. What I can’t use I donate to the high school FFA.
    Always reuse gift bags.
I can’t seem to remember my cloth grocery bags SO.. Paper grocery sacks are used for cooling cookies when I bake, draining food when I fry. I cut them up and have a nice stack to be used on cards. I also stamp on them and used as gift wrap. Also made great table cover when the grandkids came over to craft.
Plastic grocery bags are used when I share veggies from my garden and to line trash cans. The ones I can’t use I take to be recycled.
Heavy plastic bags with zippers that sheets etc. come in are used for storage. Fabric, bedding, etc are kept dust free.
I reuse glass jars of all sizes. They come in handy when I make pickles, jelly’s and jams. Also use them as flower vases. I make my own sandwich spreads in small batches and put it in large baby food jars. The smaller jars are in my craft room. My grandson is 15 yrs old so I know that’s how old the jars are.
Margarine, cool whip type plastic containers are used for leftovers so I don’t need to worry when they go in the microwave. When my son comes for dinner I always send him off with a lunch in those containers. They go in the recycle bin when he is done with them.
My family can’t stand to see me dig things out of the trash but they sure know where to come when they need something.

    Blessings BernieReplyCancel
