Day 19 – 30 Days of Giving

Friendship Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Quietfire Design - Friendship Isn
Good Sunday Morning to you!   Today’s card for 30 Days of Giving is my favorite cream and gold.   Another new card and I must say it’s not often that what I think of in a card is what I end up with.  I’m one of those who has an idea to get started but actually create as I go along.  (I’m embarrassed to say how long it takes me sometimes.)  Today I envisioned the layers, put it together quickly and was done.  Here’s how it goes – card base, layer of gold, my favorite embossing folder – Spellbinders Shady Allure wrapped with lace and ribbon followed by Spellbinders Fleur de Elegance which I have stamped with a new sweet and pretty sentiment from Quietfire Design called Friendship Isn’t a Big Thing – and topped off with Spellbinders Majestic Oval.   These elements are literally stacked upon each other to make a card.  Of course as always I add a bow and pearls when I’m finished.   So many times I see a comment saying, I wish I could do that.  Well, you know what, you can!

    Hi Becca
It all depends sometimes I have a vision of what I want for my card, but most times I just go with the flow and if I like it I go ahead.
Your cards are always beautiful and your bows are fantastic.

    Hello Becca,
What an absolutely beautiful card today.
My cards tend to evolve, I choose the stamp I wish to use, colour the stamped image, and everything else comes from that. The embossing folder, the dies all the card and colour of the ribbon.

When I create a card it’s a bit of everything you mentioned. At times I know exactly what I want, other times I’m inspired by examples I see on blogs. Cards that I create as I go seem to take the most amount of time.ReplyCancel

Just a beauty! I need to copy this one too! Love your recreated website Becca! I usually have an idea and color combinations when I create a card. I usually add something along the way to enhance it. Yes, I to am embarrassed how long it takes to create one cover. When it’s complete, I usually make 4 more as I do sell cards in fall bazares.ReplyCancel

Oh my goodness…..what a beautiful, elegant card!!!!!, Love the combination of dies and embossing folder you used. LOVE IT, Becca!

I use all three approaches to my cardmaking. Most of the time it comes from an inspiration from a card I’ve seen, but sometimes, I have an idea that just grows as I start to create.

Wow! You just keep rolling out amazing cards!

I am not creative with my own ideas however when I see something that someone else has created, I can recreate it and use what I have. I will totally change it up but it usually starts with someone elses idea.

  • KathyJuly 19, 2015 - 11:04 am

My inspiration when creating may be a poem, a set of colors, an item such as a very special paper or trinket, a person, a memory with a person, or an occasion. Many times when creating a card it reminds me of someone, so I name the card in honor of that person. When I tell them that, they are so pleased.ReplyCancel

  • NancyJBJuly 19, 2015 - 11:04 am

Most of the time that I make a card it is for a particular person so I have them in mind as to what they like. That said, I create as I go and often change direction in mid stream. Love your card and the sentiment. That is one of my favorite sayings.ReplyCancel

  • Lillian L.July 19, 2015 - 11:06 am

Another beautiful card, Becca! I actually create both ways. Sometimes I start with a vision, but rarely end up with what I envisioned. Other times I just create as I go. I don’t really know which way I prefer. Both work well for me.ReplyCancel

When I get an inspiration or vision, I sit down and “work it out” – sometimes a quick process \ sometimes a labor of love. The outcome may or may not resemble my initial idea. I have learned in life not to be so intensely vested in outcomes.ReplyCancel

Another gorgeous card. I have written down the Spellbinders you used and will check my list to see if I own any of them. Must have’s in my opinion. When I sit down to make cards I normally have an inspiration or an idea of what I want to create. I make changes as I go along.ReplyCancel

  • Linda HeitholdJuly 19, 2015 - 11:15 am

Usually I start with an inspiration. Maybe a die I want to use or an embossing folder or something I saw on the net. Then, I just create as I go. Often I’ll make a second card after studying the first thinking what if I did…. Or I should have done…..ReplyCancel

  • Maria RodriguezJuly 19, 2015 - 11:20 am

Hello and happy Sunday, Becca. I mostly get my inspiration or theme from Challenges, which I love to participate in. Or I get a request to make a specific card for a specific occasion so, the first thing I do is go look for the stamps that would be suitable and then, go from there.
Thank you so much for this chances to win your amazing cards, I’ve not been lucky so far but there is still plenty of time.ReplyCancel

  • Joni StonekingJuly 19, 2015 - 11:21 am

Becca, you have done it again! And no, I am not surprised!

I usually have an inspiration and make a “sloppy copy” to sit on my desk while I do something else for a bit, then come back to, to refine and add finishing touches, or re–do and notice where the gaps are and add another layer, or another texture, or another color. Usually I end up with a finished design and go…that’s it, that is the one! On those rare and really sweet occasions I really do have a vision for what I want the card to look like finished, and when I hold my mouth just right, and my hands are steady, and stars align…when I am finished..voila! It has worked! That is the sweet spot! I love it when that happens!

Thank you again, this really has become my gratitude practice for the month..and today I am most grateful for the community of artists I belong to. They may not know me, but I surely know you by your work. Thank you for sharing yourself this way!ReplyCancel

WONDERFUL CARD, Becca!!!! ;) I do love the sentiment you’ve added! ;)

As for your question….I have found I like to know what I’m shooting for, whether it be by inspiration from something, or that I have an idea of what I want. I don’t do so well, when just sitting down to play around…although, I have done it! ;) Where I seem to foul-up, is the lay-out in all these ways if doing a card!ReplyCancel

I usually have an inspiration for the basis of the design then it evolves as I try various thoughts. The closest I’ve come to idea directly to paper was inspired by some papers I found while working on another card. I’d been wanting to create a card with some leftover Polaroid frames I’d made & a panel with decorative scoring & grphic b&w Washi tape.. Then I spotted the biplane image on a 12 x 12 Authentique paper & a more muted overall biplane print. Focal image for the Polaroid & background paper found. Just needed to mat them on black to ground them. Voila!ReplyCancel

Lovely card. I am quite partial to ovals currently for some reason! Most times I work with a vision and it comes out more or less as planned. But sometimes its more of an organic process and its made up as I go along with varying degrees of success. Bit like cooking with and without a recipe I suppose. With a recipe normally means a better chance of something edible at the end of the process!ReplyCancel

I also have a group of GFs who are paper crafters and we call ourselves The Card Divas. When we meet, we bring a kit ready to assemble for each member. After a how-to demo for each paper craft project, we then assemble them and get to take home 5 new terrific paper craft ideas!ReplyCancel

I usually create as I go along, however sometimes I see a card or picture and immediately a card layout pops into my mind. I still fuss and cut out different colors, textures, and shapes, as well as play with the placement of things on the card. I have a whole box of die cuts in all colors that were rejected from projects or cards. When the box gets pretty full, I take them to my Amish friends and give it to them. They make cards to sell in their local Amish store, so they’re thrilled to get my rejects. The funds are used to pay for school supplies in the Amish school.

Sometimes I have a vision of what my card will look like and other times I like to just play with certain products and see what happens. For me it depends on what I am making it for. If its a wedding/Ann. or a sympathy card I like to plan it thoughtfully. Otherwise its fun to make something more whimsical and spontaneous.ReplyCancel

What a beautiful card and spot on sentiment. How I create is an evolving process. From the beginning, I would think of the individual that I was creating for and create something deeply personal as I went along, this was before my YouTube days. Now after having watched all of these videos, and read tutorials and witnessed examples of other people creative and beautiful work, my creative juices and no longer flowing as freely as they once did. I am current finding my style once again as I develop more skills.

    Blessings,
    BeverleyReplyCancel

I love it! There is an elegance to this style of card that I find irresistible… Thank you for the continuing inspiration. As to my creativity… I’d have to say “all of the above” Sometimes it is a die that inspires me or a sentiment;sometimes it is someone else’s creation or an image that pops into my head (usually just before I wake up in the morning). As to taking a long time to really get it together; that would be me, as well. I teach a class and people don’t understand that I need at least 3 days of thinking, attempting, reconsidering, and starting all over at the beginning, thinking. I can also be spontaneous (read: not following a pre-set plan) when provided with materials as I am when I take a class at a scrapbooking event. I just spent this past Friday and Saturday at a big event (hence my silence the last few days) where I attended classes and went off the chart with the materials provided and was very happy with the result. As one who teaches this craft, I know how great it is to see people take off in their own direction; that spark of individuality is exciting to see.ReplyCancel

Hmm, How do I create. I just finished a card for someone at work who is leaving and going onto bigger things. I had a little idea and it took me awhile to get everything started and put together. So I had some idea but then created more as I went along. It is harder for me to make cards for men than women, and this is the card I had to make.ReplyCancel

That embossing folder has a great base. I never think to add another plain die on top of an intricate die. Great verse from quietfire. I never really have a full plan when I start. Usually I have one thing that reminds me of the person I am giving the card. I search thru the boxes looking for other pieces of ribbon, papers, stamps, beads, dies that I think will fit. Often times I can’t use the piece that orginally inspired me to start.ReplyCancel

Sunday greetings, Becca. Love that quote and your card is, of course, exquisite. My approach really varies considerably. Occasionally I have a vision of what I want to create. I have been known to scrap lift a bit too. I also use sketches. Sometimes I have an inspiration and create along the way but that usually takes me a long time to get to the point where I am happy with the project.ReplyCancel

I LOVE your card in every way, from the embossing folder, to the dies, the perfect bow, the WHOLE card is amazing! Occasionally I’ll have a vision, but that vision doesn’t always work out. Generally when I’m creating a card, I’ve seen a card that I really like on Pinterest and then I try to recreate, using a similar stamp and as I’m creating, I almost always change up a thing or two to make it my own.ReplyCancel

About my work, then I work pretty much like you. lovely card. you are my inspiration for many cards. although mine turn about a little less polished. this is a gorgeous card. That’s a difficult question for me. Sometimes I have a clear picture in my mind what I want. Sometimes I see something in a magazine that gives me inspiration. Sometimes I just sit and put things together. It might take me a few days, but I finally come up with a design that I like. Sometimes I look at someone else’s card online (such as yours) and I take it from there. I might copy it exactly or I might change it up. As I said, not an easy answer for me.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card. I love the fleur de elegance die. I think I use all three methods (at different times to create) I sometimes CASE something someone’s done but change it up with my own twist. Often if I have a clear idea of what I want to create it turns out the way I envisioned, sometimes it turns out completely different. Sometimes I just start playing and see where the Muse leads me.ReplyCancel

I generally have a person in mind… from there, I look at my stash of materials, and try to let the memories of that individual – even if they are small ones – influence my direction. Some people enjoy embellishments, some are minimalists, some enjoy whimsy, some are more classically drawn. You can usually tell by the way a person dresses, or decorate their home or office, cubical etc… The generic cards for spontaneous gifting usually follow the minimalist bend. As I mentioned before, it’s all about the person for me. Ok, confession, IF the card was for a person like my self, it would definitely be similar to your bend. I dearly love lace, and ribbon… I enjoy being me!!! I like being a girl!!!ReplyCancel

I am one of those ones that has no idea what I want to make. I make it up as I go along or I think of the recipient I am intending it for and put a little of them and a little of me into it and just wing it!ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card! I do both, I like to follow challenges on blogs, they help me get ideas to start the process.ReplyCancel

  • Patricia HowarthJuly 20, 2015 - 5:55 am

Morning Becca, Wow !! I love this card, especially the sentiment, and that gorgeous background embossing, stunning.
When I create it takes me ages to think of what I want to do, and then when I start it sometimes ends up totally different from what I first thought hahaha.
Lots of love from Patricia xxReplyCancel

  • Susan SalterJuly 20, 2015 - 6:32 am

Both but usually I create as I go along. I will start with a stamp or a die I want to use and paper color depends on mood. I find all my projects in a particular day will follow one color combination. How about you?ReplyCancel

What a BEAUTIFUL card for a friend! I love it, especially the elegance of this card. You introduced me to the Canadian company Quietfire, I’m a Canadian… LOVE their elegant stamps!

I tend to start with a basic idea, that’s when I do the best. But whether I just start and play and find my way, or I start with a basic idea, I tend to change it as I go. Perhaps that’s why it takes me so long to make a card, when others seem to make them so much faster, I don’t know. But I do enjoy the process…

Today I really need to start making a card for a friend I worked with before I was disabled, I found out that she is dying–the idea of making this card is very intimidating, but I need to just make the best card that I can and send it.

Thanks for always creating cards that bring joy into people’s lives.

    Bless you!

I usually have a vision…it never quite goes as planned tho does it! Sometimes it’s something around the table that catches my eye and I go with that and embellish.
    Stunning card as usual Becca.

Another totally elegant card today! (When are they not?!!!)

I usually start with an idea of what I need and then see what I have on hand that fits.ReplyCancel

  • K. BauderJuly 20, 2015 - 7:55 am

I START with an idea but it usually doesn’t end up where I started. The ideas mushroom as I craft and sometimes it doesn’t work as I think it will so I am always changing things as I go.ReplyCancel

Beautiful card Becca. I very much create as I go along, adding bits until I am happy with the result. XxReplyCancel

  • Karen WeddingJuly 20, 2015 - 8:41 am

I kind of do all of them. Depends on the card I need to make. There are times I don’t know what I’m going to make until I look at the stamps I have and then start from there. Sometimes I see a card I like and steal the idea and make my own.ReplyCancel

  • Jeannine S.July 20, 2015 - 8:44 am

I usually look for a card that inspires me as a kicking off point. Then I let my creative spirit take charge. Sometimes it goes really well and others take me forever to complete, I’ve had instances where I have to drop it altogether and come back the next morning to complete it. I find I don’t do well when it’s a card that I need right away so I try to have a stash done without the wording so I can quickly adapt it when needed.ReplyCancel

Another gorgeous card! I will have an occasion in mind & go look for inspiration as I don’t create from scratch. If they warrant a “Becca” card then I go to APG first, otherwise I go to Pinterest. If I’m going to re-create a “Becca” card I start with my sentiment & look for card that has the same sentiment “shape”. My colors aren’t always the same & dies may not be the same but it’s the same feel. If I go to Pinterest, I look at my many pins & go from there…
Thank you for your continued inspiration & the chance to win one of your breathtaking cards!ReplyCancel

  • Niki WinchellJuly 20, 2015 - 9:36 am

Yet another beautiful card. I love this sentiment.

I usually start with some kind of idea of what I want to make, often something I’ve seen on line. Sometimes it’s the colors or layout that I’m using, other times I’m shamelessly copying! Occasionally, I’ll look at something I’ve had in my “stash” for too long and say “I have to use this today!”ReplyCancel

I saw one of your cards on Pinterest and followed you here! Your work is beautiful! My cards always surprise me. I think I’m going to do them one way and end up with something different every time! That’s part of the fun though.ReplyCancel

  • JoAnn B.July 20, 2015 - 10:29 am

Love your beautiful card. Actually, all these apply when I create. It depends on what theme and for whom I am making the card. Sometimes it is from a sketch or just for a friend or family member.ReplyCancel

  • Kristine VencelJuly 20, 2015 - 11:09 am

Oh my gosh, Becca, this card – is – stunningly – gorgeous!!!!!! I think it is a little more on the simple end, but so very elegant! SWOON!
( I am a day late but still wanted to get my 2 cents in!)
How do I create? Hmmmmmm, pausing to think. Sometimes I am inspired from seeing a project I love. Sometimes I see a color combo & think, Wow, I can do_?______ with this. Sometimes I purchase a new die or product specifically because I was inspired by the product. Sometimes I need a certain type of card or gift & I search on Pinterest for ideas. But mostly, I am inspired by the creations I see on the blogs I follow. I save & bookmark the project or site & refer back to it later on.
Lately, I am struggling with trying to recreate a project I love using only what I already have in my stash. That is very difficult for me. I never recreate the inspiration idea exactly. I always change the color, the texture, the embellishments, the sentiments. But changing a die grouping, or using different patterned paper than what I already have is very difficult for me.
Also, creating from a sketch is very hard for me. That Should be really easy, right? Nope, it’s not! It leaves the field w-I-d-e open with choosing colors, sentiments, texture, patterns, metals, ribbons, buttons, etc! Whew! It’s a wonder I ever complete a project at all! Lol
I love looking for ideas on your site, Becca. I am always inspired to look thru my dies to recreate something you have shared. And it never looks exactly like a Becca design. But I am pleased with my design!ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Sorry a bit delayed again lol! Beautiful card. I craft by all three lol! Sometimes I know exactly how I want a card to turn out, other times I get inspiration from designers like yourself and at other times I just put it together as I go along, it really depends on the day.

    Love & hugs
