Day of Giving Friday: Being Strong on 9/11

Card Making Ideas by Becca Feeken using Quietfire Design You Never Know How Strong and Spellbinders Mystical Embrace - www.amazingpapergrace.com
Good morning friends, out of respect I always take pause as we come back around to such a heart wrenching day in our history – 9/11. None in our generation will ever forget what we were doing that moment, that day. We clung to each other and our international friends covered us in prayer. Weeks turn into months, months into years; I thought it fitting to take a moment in remembrance. It just so happens that today is Day of Giving Friday and I picked a card that I thought speaks to a time of trial – 9/11 or the trials we feel on a daily basis.  It is a truth that you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.  If you are new to my blog, you can read about Day of Giving Friday on my FAQ List at #11.

For today’s comment –  What we’re you doing when the realization of what happened on 9/11 hit you – do you remember?

Oh my goodness, I can relate to this wonderful quote. In fact I have used this stamp myself on many occasions to give some support to friends, and my sister. A beautiful card Becca. I remember exactly what I was doing on 9/11. My dad had died earlier in the year and my mum had come down to sty with us for a while. As I was driving home from work the news broke on the radio and when I arrived home my mum was watching it on television. Some of those images have stayed with me to this day!! Hugs Christine xxReplyCancel

    Dear, dear Becca,
I know of noone who has forgotten where they were or what they were doing on days such as 9/11 or the day John F. Kennedy was assinated. I was in my office with the radio on and just totally and completly stopped to listen as the first tower, then the second tower was hit. It still gives me chills as I think about the disaster for so many. My heart goes out to all who lost friends and family on that day – we will never forget the sacrifice given by them and all the first responders! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!
Today’s card is another beauty and of a somber nature – almost like my signature sympathy cards (except I don’t use gold on them). Is this one of your new dies? I really love it and of course, if it is, I will be ordering (think you said it would be coming out on the 15th of September.)
May GOD bless you and yours on the monumental day, Becca!
    Hugs

But we were both stucked to the TV for the rest of the day watching all these terrible pictures after we had tryed to reach the people we knew over there, and heard they thanks god were all okay. But it´s definitely a day I wount forget ever, and I wasn´t even there.ReplyCancel

I am British and was running a small hotel…..having a break I put the TV on in the afternoon…very rare for me….and watched in amazement and despair as the second building collapsed….during the day all the guests gathered in the lounge….including those from the U.S. ….we just needed to be together. So sad.ReplyCancel

What a beautiful card and a perfect sentiment for this day of remembrance. I was traveling in Ohio and Pennsylvania with a friend and another friend was taking us on a tour that day. When she picked us up at the motel and told us the news we were just in shock. Everywhere we went there were TVs on. The scenes were so surreal. It was just unthinkable that this could happen.ReplyCancel

I was at work on this day and somebody told me what had happened I did not believe them and rang home to ask me husband if it was true He told me it was true, and I still could not believe that someone could be so wicked as to do that

I will NEVER FORGET!!! I was in the car with several women I worked with headed into NYC for a meeting when our cell phones started ringing. We looked out the window and could see the first tower burning. As we were almost at our destination, we had to pull over to let the first responders pass. We could smell the tower burning and that smell stays with me to this day! Of course, that was just the beginning of the next couple of hours of complete terror. I remember like it was yesterday! My heart goes out to all of the families who lost loved ones on that horrific day the many first responders who died later on as a result of their heroic work on that day! God Bless!ReplyCancel

Dear Becca: I don’t think we will ever forget that tragic day and what we were doing when what was going on finally sunk in.
I wasn’t even watching the news channels, I was watching “I Dream of Jeannie” and having a cup of coffee. Then, the phone rang and it was one of my daughters, she asked me if I was watching the news and when I said no, she urged me to change the channel because “there has been an accident in NYC, an airplane just crashed on one of the Twin Towers”, I immediately changed to a news channel and was watching the tower in flames, at that point I really thought it was a tragic accident but then, I the other plane came into the picture and I watched in horror how it slammed into the other tower in a manner that looked totally on purpose and right then I realized what was going on. Then, my youngest daughter, who was at the University, came home because they sent everybody home, and we both sat there, watching this tragic day on tv. Then the Pentagon was hit, it was just horrible, we were crying in disvelief. My husband came home from work and we all hugged each other. Our oldest daughter came to join us later.
Every year we remember this day and all the sacrifices that were made by the first responders and everybody who helped so much.
Thank you for allowing us to express here our thoughts on this National Day of Mourning.ReplyCancel

I was on my way to work. I called my husband and told him to watch the TV. Something big was going on. Beautiful card and perfect saying. Makes you stop and think. I was in a classroom with 21 3 and 4 year olds when the planes hit and it was so hard to give full attention to them. It was the not knowing what was going on and with so many teachers having families in NY made it a very difficult day. I knew my brother was working on the very top of the US Capitol dome and I worried that this would be another target. This would be a day that none of us will ever forget.ReplyCancel

I remember all to well that horrific day. I was at work when we got a call from our boss saying that our base was put on high alert status, and that all non essential personnel were being sent home. As I did not fall into that category, I was asked to remain. We were allowed to take a few extra breaks however to watch the news as work permitted and were allowed to contact any family members if we thought it was necessary. It was a very somber day for all of us. One that I for one shall never forget.

I was on third shift that day and I got up and for some reason I turned on the television and what I saw was just got wrenching I couldn’t believe what they did to us. At first I thought it was a joke and I switched channels and it was still on I stood there routed to the kitchen floor and just sobbed for all those people who lost their lives for the policemen and firemen he tried so hard to save them and for all the families it would go through a living hell every day of their life watching loved ones die. For all of those who are gone I’m so sorry and I love the ones left behind my heart goes out to all of you. Becca, what a lovely remembrance.ReplyCancel

I was taking care of my paraplegic husband and his needs when a neighbor called me on the phone. His voice was tense with a sound in his voice that I had not heard from him before this day. His only sentence, was: “turn on the TV”. I got the TV on just after the first plane hit the first tower. Oh, my God, how could this be happening? I stood there in the room watching in disbelief as the second plane hit the second tower. One then knew the first plane hitting the tower was not an accident. Fear filled my soul. Sadness filled my heart. I would not believe I was seeing this tragic situation happening in real life and not in an action packed movie. I stayed “glued” to the TV all day watching the horrific scenes before my eyes. It was like I was frozen in time with PTSD messing with my mind. It was years after this historic day, before I could go away from home without having some fear of “what next”. God Bless America and God bless all those who lost their lives and to their survivors. We, in the US, lost our “innocence” that day in September 2001. We will never be the same as before 9/11. Your card today is elegant with lots of layers and an appropriate sentiment.ReplyCancel

  • Mary EstherSeptember 11, 2015 - 7:44 am

I had not left for work yet on 9-11 when I received a phone call and was told to turn on the news. It was difficult to realize the images were not special effects of a tv movie but reality. My children were at school and my husband was at work. I went through the motions of going to work but just wanted to have my family all safely united at home that evening. I knew that life would never be as it was prior to 9-11. We will never forget…

I watched it all unfold on the Today Show from the very beginning. I remember when the first plane hit and I thought “there is something very strange about a plane hitting the tower.” The weather was so lovely it just didn’t make sense at all. I hated it when my thoughts were proven to be correct and it was much worse than just a plane hitting the tower accidentally. Thank you for honoring this heartbreaking day with your lovely creation.ReplyCancel

Gorgeous card and wonderful sentiment today. I am Canadian and remember hearing it on the radio while I was driving. Couldn’t believe what I was hearing and returned home right away. Turned on CNN and saw the second tower come down. I was just devastated that this could be happening in New York. It just didn’t seem possible. My girlfriend was in New York at the time, and no news from her for over 24 hours before we knew she was safe. Thanks for honouring this day.ReplyCancel

The card is very fitting. I was in a classroom of kindergarteners that morning. Although the teachers wanted to watch the TV to see what was going on, we knew it would upset the children, so we had to wait until later to see what had happened. You’re right, we will never forget it.ReplyCancel

  • Gretchen WislonSeptember 11, 2015 - 8:16 am

I think we all know what we were doing that day, on the 11th of September of 2001, the same as we remember the day November 22, 1963, the day that President Kennedy was shot. However the 11th of September is embedded into our brains far more than in 1063 as we watched it happen, we watched the TV sets and watched every little details that was put in front of us, and many scenes were played over and over. I sat on my sofa in disbelief of what was happening in our beautiful county of the United States of America. This doesn’t happen in our place, it happens to some other country. NO, it happened here in our own back yard. The sadness is still in my heart and I think we have had more violence in our country since this happened. I pray everyday for peace and to protect the men and women that serve our country in the service and the same for all the policemen, firemen, EMT’s that have sworn to serve and protect us. St. Michael the Archangel look after all of these brave men and women.
Sorry, I guess sometime I get on a roll and can’t stop.

Hugs and God Bless my Friend!

I was on my way to St. Louis for our monthly embroiderer’s guild meeting when the radio announcer said something about a plane flying into a building. I called my husband and told him to watch the TV to see what was going on (probably the only day since he retired that he hadn’t turned the TV on as soon as he got up).
We held our meeting and went out for lunch and then, for the first time, saw the carnage that had happened while we were meeting.

Beautiful card & sentiment. I remember I was pregnant with my only child, being high risk, no one wanted to tell me. I was at work and we went over to a meeting room to watch the news. One of our Architects was explaining how the plane strategically hit the tower, because it would melt the main steel beams, and at any moment the building will collapse. It was so eerie because as he finished that statement the building came down. It was a sad day for our nation.ReplyCancel

I remember when I was in fifth grade and we had a tv in the classroom when Kennedy was shot I cried and so did the teacher what a shock, I don’t remember what we were watching when the news broke in. Beautiful card, Becca. I was at home when our daughter called in a panic wanting to know where her Dad was. You see, my DH often did field work in Somerset Co, Pennsylvania and she was afraid that he was out there. Luckily he was working from home that day but when she told us to turn on the TV all I could do was sit down in shock with tears running down my face. And several days later, he WAS out in the field there and actually saw the plane take off from Johnstown, PA airport with the black box from Flight 93….a lone plane in a silent sky.

Later on we had a neighbor who was working in the second tower when the first one was hit. They decided to immediately evacuate and therefore survived.ReplyCancel

My husband and I flew to San Antonio for his business trip a couple days before and we always had their continental breakfast in the morning. That particular morning the lobby was full of people and we wondered why it was so crowded. After we got our breakfast and sat down that we saw the second plane fly into the second tower. It was so awful and we stayed glued to the TV for hours and hours. So many people lost their lives that day and we all still remember where we were and what we were doing. We couldn’t fly home so we eventually had to rent a car and drive back to Oklahoma. I also remember the day in Ok. City when the bomb blew up the Murray Bldg. I was at work that day and had my very small black & white TV at my desk and watched that event unfold. Pray for our nation and our people that we don’t experience any more horrible events like that again.

Truly beautiful card Becca. I remember exactly what I was doing on 11 September 2001. I can still picture it now. I was at my desk in work when one of my colleagues received a phone call from her husband with the devastating news of a terrible accident at the twin towers and everyone was dumbstruck. As the news kept unfolding from the other side of the Atlantic with ever more horrors, we were all in shock that far worse than an accident, it was a deliberate act of terrorism. I shiver now at the thought of that dreadful day when our hearts went out to the very many people affected by this monstrous act. Unfortunately, these brutal acts of terrorism are continuing today, particularly in Syria and the aftermath for the poor refugees fleeing their country is so, so tragic. One day we will all live in peace. I hope I live to see the day. Sorry for pouring this out but I feel so incensed by it all.

Oh yes, one of those days I will never forget. I was preparing to go to a job interview & heard it on the radio. Turned on the TV to see what they were talking about. Could not believe my eyes! Or my ears!
I remember driving to the interview watching the skies, feeling anxious about what might happen. Of course the TV was on at the interview also, with people just plastered to the screen with disbelief on their faces. It still brings tears to my eyes & pain to my heart. And I pray it does not happen again.
But on a lighter note, your card is gorgeous, Becca!ReplyCancel

This card is so beautiful & the sentiment is so uplifting. My sister is fighting ovarian cancer & I never realized how strong she was until going through this. She has had lots of problems but just accepts them & plows through.

On 9/11 I was eating breakfast, watching the Today show. I think I never left the room, away from the TV until late afternoon.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
I was working for JMC Direct a part of Thomas Cook travel Company and can remember it precisely and the deathly quiet that descended our call centre and then the tears that came and we weren’t even in it but our hearts just went out that day to all those people that we were watching and could do absolutely nothing to help. That paralization that you get that you can’t move, speak or do anything, thanking god almighty that there were survivors but asking the same god almighty why, why them. Then the phones started to ring with people wanting to cancel holidays when we were powerless to do anything. We understood their fear but at that point could do nothing to help, our heads and hearts heavy and powerless. But it is the quietness that i don’t think i will ever forget nor the sights of people throwing themselves out of the top of the building and knowing that there was no way they would survive either way. I still remember this date and the scenes from the day live on within me.

    Hi Becca
I remember it well. My husband and I were home having a late breakfast when my daughter called, She was so upset and told us to open our television to see what was happening, needless to say that we were glued to our set for the duration of the day. that was the beginning of so many changes in our lives.

I was homeschooling our children (then 15 & 11) when my dad called to tell me what happened. Since we didn’t have TV at the time, and because we also wanted to be together on such a day, later that afternoon we packed up supper fixings and went to his place to watch the TV reports and eat supper together. I will never forget the shock and sorrow we felt on that day. I also quickly checked on one of my older brothers that lives in N. Jersey to make sure he and his family were safe.ReplyCancel

That morning my daughter had the news on while she was getting ready for work when she saw that the first tower had been hit. She came to my room to tell me what was happening…we spent hours watching in horror as the events of that day continued to unfold. My daughter worked at Disneyland and like so many other places that attract large numbers of people it remained closed.

Perfect card for the day, Becca.

My future husband and I had made the decision to rent a home together and I was on the way from SW WA to a Portland suburb to await a utility company to come, as well a the cable company. It was early in the morning and I had the news on. The first tower had been hit….then the second. By the time I was getting a cup of coffee, air space had been closed. When I got to the house, I didn’t have a radio or anything, so I listened to the car radio intermittently. My husband was an active member of the Oregon Air National Guard and was on a major drill that day. He came home for a few minutes to see how I was, and I think to do a bit of grounding for himself. He said the air base was a tight ball of nerves…and they had had to scramble jets once already to head up north to get a civilian plane down onto the nearest air strip.

I introduced myself to the next door neighbors that day, and they loaned me a radio so I could listen to the news. Their daughter had just come home from the hospital, with a baby girl born the day before…she is now 14.

Truly one of the before and after moments in history…those who were alive remember where they were, what they were doing. Like JFK’s assassination. Thanks for asking Becca. Off to read some other remembrances, with a prayer for those who mourn, and a prayer for peace.ReplyCancel

What a pretty pretty card Becca!! I even have most of the “parts” that you used, so I should be able to recreate something similar. The sentiment is so very true and meaningful for many occasions. As with most, I will always remember what I was doing on 9/11…..I was getting ready for work and listening to the news–Good Morning America, and remember the serious tone of Diane Sawyer’s voice. I walked around to the front of the TV just in time to see the 2nd plane hit. My office was crowded for the rest of the day, as I had a small TV turned on. We watched the coverage as a group, feeling better about the fact that we were all together. My moods went from one extreme to another that day….It was my 25th wedding anniversary, so it stands out for a number of reasons! But, to add a bit of humor to this somber subject, my husband sometimes still forgets our anniversary, and did the very next year! (It’s OK, he is a great guy and there are MANY more important things to me!)ReplyCancel

Good Morning Becca, I remember 9-11-2001 tragedy vividly. I was getting ready for work, I turned on my TV to watch the first plane fly into the first tower then the second plane fly into the second tower. I sat on the edge of my bed in shock and called to my husband to look at the TV, I said to him “is this real, he said “I don’t know”. He sat on the edge too and we both sat there dumb founded. Eventually we were convinced it was real and finished getting ready for work. It was a very somber ride (we car pool). Hugs to all families and friends who lost their loved ones my heart cries for you.

    Hi, Becca,
Beautiful card and a lovely way to honor our memories of 9-11.

Some events have such magnitude that our experience comes flooding back, undiminished by time and space. I woke up to radio reports so horrific that my mind could not grasp them. I looked for validation that the reports were real. Despite tv images, I found it impossible to believe. I think I watched days and days of television coverage, hoping for a different outcome. Years later, what I know is that tragedy has a tremendous unifying effect; and that humans are capable of unspeakable evil, but also, of extraordinary courage, generosity, hope and love.

    Love and blessings, dear friend,
    SandyReplyCancel

During break, I went into the lounge and saw the plane crash into the second building. Was this really happening, it seemed so surreal.

A touching card sentiment, Becka, but so true. I certainly do remember 9/ll. My son was working in a building across the street of the Towers. When his brother called him to quickly evacuate his building, he said he looked out the window and at that moment saw the second tower being hit. With that, everyone in his office started running to get out. They ran down 47 flights of stairs as the elevators were not working, and when he got outside he said it was like it was raining paper from the sky – all coming from the towers, so thick it was like smog. When he got to the train station, the last train was just pulling out and everyone was directed to Madison Square Garden for instructions. It took him an hour to stand in line to use the telephone at one of the hotels to notify his family that he was OK. Thankfully, he was able to finally board a train many hours later and return home to his family, but you can imagine our constant worry until then. Sympathy and prayers to so many families who had tragedies. May God bless them and keep our country safe.ReplyCancel

We were on holiday in New Jersey and that morning 9/11 were on our way to NYC . The events left us with no accommodation and we were stranded for over a week , no flights back to UK. The care and friendship from our American ‘friends’ unknown before then will never be forgotten. We cried and comforted each other and had lots of offers of a place to stay. I remember all too clearly. I was an administer at an elementary school in the Hudson Valley, 70 miles north of NYC. My husband was a District administrator in Long Island and called when it happened which enabled me to immediately send TA’s around to alert teachers and tell them to remain calm and not tell the students. I knew parents would be rushing to the school as soon as they found out and buses would also be arriving to take children home. Parents were met at the doors and in the parking lot and taken to the auditorium, where their children would be brought. It was difficult to calm many of the parents so they wouldn’t scare their children. I also had to be sure parents who drove there were capable of driving home.
Our daughter and her husband lived and worked in NYC, and I had no idea if they were okay but my job kept me focused. My husband called as soon as he heard they were fine.
My cousins’ fiancé was a fireman who died in the rescue that day. The following week, I took a train down to NYC for his MEMORIAL SERVICE in Staten Island. I have never seen NYC that sober and quiet! It was so erie, You didn’t even hear horns honking. American Flags flew everywhere.
I will never forget that day and how it affected and changed our country.

Our son had just moved to NYC for grad school. He had been watching the news then called me at work to say a plane had just flown into the World Trade Center. Then another plane. He said he would call back when he knew more. I sat for a few minutes, then told my boss, a native New Yorker, what my son had told me. She looked at me for a minute and asked where the plane was. As the news spread throughout the office, every radio, every TV in the building went on and desks emptied out. As other planes crashed it felt as though we were being besieged. My boss’ mother, who lived just steps from 14th St. couldn’t be reached (she was outside watching). A year later she died of lung cancer–never a smoker. 9/11 I was glad our son was ok, but I have never been more terrified or sad. I live in the UK and remember that I stopped off at my corner shop on the way home from the morning school run and saw the news coverage on their TV. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and I will never forget your tragedy either.xReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,

Wow such a gorgeous card with a very fitting sentiment. I remember coming home from work and seeing it all on the news, could not believe such a thing had happened. I think that was the turning point of realizing the lengths these terrorists will go to, I cannot remember them doing anything as bad as that before but then that moment was so shocking it erased all the past awful things they had done. My heart went out to all those people, their families, we can not even begin to know what it must have felt like.

    Love & Hugs

I definitely remember what I was doing on this horrific day. My husband was at cardio rehab after having a bypass and I came in from walking the dog, put the TV on and thought it was a film at first. I just stood there with my coat on still holding the dogs lead watching it in horror as things began to unfold literally. I will never forget that day as any of us will. It made the world closer in some respect but at the same time untrusting of any stranger sadly. God bless them all and the poor survivors who all still suffering as a result.ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,
It will be with my until my dying day. We had come home from holiday the day before and I was hanging out the washing in the garden. When I walked into the house, I switched on the TV, and thought at first that it was a film. I checked the channel and saw that I HAD put on the news channel, and then the reporter spoke, the remarkable thing was that they just happened to have a crew there and captured everything as it was happening. It was just after the first plane hit the tower, and I called to my husband to say that there had been a terrible accident, when the second plane hit. We were numb. I telephoned my daughter who worked in the Medical School in the University, and they immediately switched on their TV’s. George and I watched all day, we saw the brave fire fighters going in and not coming out. The fatigue and tiredness, the people running for their lives, and those who could not face the prospect of what was to come. I will never, ever forget the terrible sights. I still remember them in my prayers.
Love, hugs and prayers to those still suffering.

    Hi Becca,
Such a tragic day in history. Even though I am in Australia it felt like it was on our doorstep. We were all so shocked to what horror had just occured. I remember I was asleep & was woken by my husband. My husband who was up at work at 2am had heard it on the radio on the way home. He turned on the tv & it was on every station.
So many heroic stories that came afterwards!
    Happy weekend xReplyCancel

I’ll never forget that day. It was a nice morning and had taken my breakfast and my little radio outside to eat before I end to my daughter’s high school PTA board meeting. I heard them talking about a plane going into a building in New York. I went inside to turn on the TV and saw the 2nd plane. It was such a shock. I called my husband at his work and told him to find a TV and turn it on. While we were in our PTA meeting someone said something about another place going down. I am so thankful for our President Bush. I just prayed for all of the people living through the terror. So many people were directly impacted. We live near a major airport and always here and see the planes flying over. I was so surreal to not see or hear planes for the next few days. So many memories. I still pray for those that were directly impacted. So many families, friends, coworkers lost loved ones. I can’t even imagine the sorrow they still feel.ReplyCancel
