Day of Giving Friday: Our Friendship Spans the Miles

And then in an instant, our plans changed and an adventure was in the making (but I digress).  Good morning sweet friends, I’ve just finished a trip to CHA in Phoenix, Arizona, where all the new crafts are on display and artisans from the US and indeed, the world, come together.  It’s always nerve racking for me but on the other side I get a huge creative boost because I get to talk to real people, face to face, who share where I fit into their crafting life!   It’s definitely a two way street – I create the things I love and try to find a way to give them to you in a way that lifts you up.  Why?  Because day after day, you lift me up.  January 2017 has been one of the hardest months of my life – a family event brings me to a place in my journey where life will change for me;  it has to, for my heart to survive.  But just as it has been a hard month, I can’t even begin to count all the blessings of new friends and a renewed spirit to embrace and celebrate each day.  As I encourage you to do, I’ll craft and create through it and love that you understand my vulnerability and faith comes out in all I create.

On to my card – using one of my favorite sentiments from Quietfire Design (waving hi at my friend Suzanne Cannon who saved time, hugs and a cup of coffee during CHA).  I reached for this stamp because I’m reminded that so many of our friendships are across the miles – it doesn’t diminish them but should remind us that others from far away hold us in their hearts.  This card is made using the Spellbinders Graceful Damask in a conventional way along the side of the card, topped off by a pretty bow.   I wanted texture and different details for this card so I embossed using a texture plate then rubbed over with Ranger Antique Linen Distress Ink.   I cannot find a name to link it up but once I’m home and can see the packaging, I’ll link it up.  Last, I used the traditional photo corners from Spellbinders Graceful Frame Maker, just to add balance to the right side of my card.  These are a favorite for me and their jumbo size makes them just right for card making.

And now a little bit more about that adventure :-)  My sister went with me to CHA again this year and instead of going home, we changed our flight plans and decided to knock one thing off of our bucket list.  Our persistence paid off because as night fell in the mountains of Arizona – we wondered if this wild hair might be our undoing.   Us Florida girls perceived Arizona to be completely desert and hot all year round – what a surprise.  Apparently our trip on a lark was on the cusp of a pretty bad snow storm.  The roads had been plowed but as the temperatures dropped, it became less obvious where the road really was.  And then out of thin air – a snow plow.  We fell in behind him and he got us through the last 30 miles.

Amazing Paper Grace - and then in an instant we were off on an adventure - Grand Canyon - January 2017
The parks oldest and probably most passionate ranger, Ranger Ron Brown, chatted with us about the park and what it meant to him and his wife (also a ranger) who lays at rest on this majestic site.  He said that we had come on one of the most spectacular days of the year.  Apparently after a snow storm, the snow clears the air for a crystal clear view of the Grand Canyon.  People say it all the time, but pictures simply do not do it justice.  This is God’s majesty and is a sight almost too glorious to take in.  I was humbled and the smallness of my daily life was certainly put into perspective.   Thank you for letting me share a day spent in breathless awe and wonder.

post-header-bottomLife isn’t about what happens to you but how you handle it.  Choices and options take the hard edges off of disappointment and mold what may be perceived as a down stairway into an up stairway – it’s all in how you look at it.  I struggle just like anyone else, and this month I’ve found comfort in the simplest things – three kiddos that love me – and a creative outlet and a community that keeps my face pointed up towards the sun.  I hope you will continue to visit – I consider you all friends and you are an integral part of my journey.

I pray that the family event which will change your life will all be for the good. The Lord is in charge and knows the outcome. My awe-inspiring moment was driving home and in the sky I saw what I call the rays of the Holy Spirit. It is the sun shining behind a cloud with the rays reminding me of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for all of your inspiring cards.ReplyCancel

Becca, it was my wish to actually meet you at CHA, and that wish came true! You have such a wonderful patient spirit when dealing with those of us making your lovely make and take at the Spellbinders booth. For me, that was a little snapshot of your very generous nature, and just how much you love creating graceful paper products. I have followed your blog for years with countless untold inspiration. I thank you for being brave enough to show your vulnerability to the public and somehow smiling through it all. I hope you find peace in your current situation, and rest in your heart for any decision(s) you have to make.ReplyCancel

This is a lovely post and inspired message. Thanks for sharing your story about the Grand Canyon and your closing message about the “up” staircase. I am occasionally awestruck by the words of a song, or witnessing a RAK, a hug from my son, God’s beauty in a sunset/sunrise, or the inspiration in a Bible verse.ReplyCancel

    Hello Becca,
First of all you show us the most beautiful card with a sentiment which is so true, as 9 of us meet up twice a year travelling from all over the length of the UK and Germany, and then almost stun us with photographs that defy description. The name Grand Canyon does not describe the majesty of the view.
Today I was at a Holocaust Memorial Service at my Granddaughter’s school, and seeing 10 and 11 year old Catholic children honouring the Holocaust was both moving and awe inspiring, and their reading of Survivor’ stories rendered us all speechless. We need more understanding of each other.

This card is so amazing! I must say the most awe inspiring place for me was visiting the King’s Mountain Battle Ground in South Carolina. My ancestor died in the battle in 1780. Walking in an area where walked and gave his life for our country was very humbling for me. Thomas Jefferson referred to this battle as the turning point of the Revolution.ReplyCancel

I’ve seen many things in my lifetime that were awe inspiring but absolutely nothing can compare to witnessing the births of all three of my beautiful Grandchildren. The oldest is 14, the middle one is 10 and the youngest is 6 and I remember each of their births like it was yesterday. God’s miracles.ReplyCancel

    Hi Becca,
So glad you had the opportunity to take in the Grand Canyon – unforgettable inspiring views (even though I am sure you were shaking in your shoes traveling there – LOL! Your card is a show stopper too, as always…you do a beautiful job. Thank you for sharing Becca.
We had a snow and ice storm here in Salem too and I was housebound for several days. Each time I looked out our window lined living room windows I saw a panorama of white – on the ground, on all our fir trees and shrubs…it stayed that way frozen and shining like diamonds for days…finally it warmed and truly ‘overnight’ the white went away and everything was totally green in the morning. I looked out my bedroom window and was stunned and awed – let out a praise and said ‘spring is here!’ Well, it was actually in the 40’s so not exactly spring, but i felt that way after seeing white for such a long time – LOL! Still amazes me when I thing about it!

What a beautiful card Becca and another of your fabulous bows! I wish I could do bows like you. It takes a real talent to do this!

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon and it is absolutely majestic. However I think the many waterfalls that are flowing in Northern California now are also an awe inspiring sight. Lovely card today. I was able to purchase some of your latest dies from Create and Craft before they were available in the US. The first one of your dies that I used was the Graceful Damask die you used on today’s card. Love it. I am concerned for you and sending prayers for God to give you strength and understanding as you go through this new path of your life. Stay strong my friend and know others care. Your trip to the Grand Canon is awesome. I have not been there, but hope to do so. At least you did not have to battle the crowds. Now to your question: I had the opportunity to witness something awe inspiring that left me nearly speechless. My awe inspiring trip was to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. I have never lived in Colorado, but instantly felt this was “home” to me. Strange – yes? Take careReplyCancel

Love your card and especially the sentiment, but especially the wonderful thought at the end about the stairway. Seems there are a lot of people these days that do not want to take responsibility for their actions and decisions. Life is what you make of it. I love to look for the rainbows at the end of a shower. I was a member of the Rainbow Girls when growing up. Reminds me of God’s promises and they are just a beautiful sight! That and a beautiful sunset – both awe inspiring!ReplyCancel

When we moved to Arizona from NY, I knew I was going to miss my beautiful flower gardens. I was sure that in the desert I wouldn’t see any. The mountains were jaw-dropping gorgeous. Then it happened. Our cactI had blossomed huge white flowers. The hedgehog cactus had vibrant fuchsia-colored blossoms. After it rains, the desert has a carpet of green with flowers. I still had flowers to enjoy. Arizona is such an amazing state. So glad you enjoyed the Grand Canyon. I’m looking forward to going there.ReplyCancel

My speechless moment happened many years ago. I was in San Francisco and had taken a trip to the Japanese gardens at their park. (This in itself was a biggie because I am fearful of traveling alone and took a bus from the hotel without my husband to guide me.). I found a big Japanese pagota-no longer there- and climbed up to a lovely view. I was filled with a sense of peace and I sat there and prayed. I felt God’s presence in that structure. I really believe that He doesn’t care if we’re Buddist, Muslem, Christian, or Jew– He loves us all and only wants us to follow His golden rule. He was surely there for me that day.ReplyCancel

Glad you and your Sis were able to cross the Grand Canyon off your bucket list. A few years ago, when we went back to New York (lived there the first 32 years of my life), my hubbie and I went to Niagara Falls and that too was quite the sight.
Since we are approaching Feb. hope it will be better for you and as a Child of God, know HE will handle everything for you. God Bless my friend.

Gorgeous card. Love you showing us how you use your dies. It’s inspiring to see how you perceive an effect. Having said that, your stairway comment is enlightening. You should think about a line of sentiment stamps yourself. :>) I see a lot of awe in all God’s creations. I haven’t traveled much, but the awe is in the eye of the beholder, eh? Dear Becca,
I love today’s card. What a lovely technique you applied to the embossing! The distress ink definitely made it ‘pop’.
You expressed so beautifully why you hold such a special place in my heart – through all the trials and tribulations of life you remain faithful to your purpose and bring all you have to it. You are a shining example to all of us. I pray that you are finding support and comfort for the hardships you suffered this month and I praise God for His presence in your life as you prepared for and journeyed to CHA and your adventure, with your sister, to the Grand Canyon. WOW, Becca! What fun!!!! I love your card {{{hugz}}}.

Hun, do not ever feel like you are less than. You are a Masterpiece of the Master Artist… just as you are –so do not ever change for anyone or anything….mmmmk. God never makes mistakes.

Your adventure is what memories are created by so enjoy the moments with your precious Sister.

Sometimes God allows things to happen to stretch us and grow us but as you have said it is all about our focus. We can sit here and feel sorry for ourselves and make ourselves and everyone around us miserable or we can rise above by watching out for those treasures in the desert places. They are meant to draw us closer to our Heavenly Father. The best place to be is to use your hard times and help out others who are in that very spot you have just made it through. For myself , I reach out to the Chronically Ill who deal with Chronic Pain and the Abused as that is what I am dealing with and have been through and have survived, but I was tired of just being a survivor and decided to R.I.S.E { R= Refine, I= Illuminate, S= Sparkle, E= Edify} above and to S.O.A.R {S= Strong, O=Obvert, A=Aesthetic, R=Reformers} in Christ.

Anyway, I am so glad you had your fun with your Sister. Family is precious and to be treasured. <3 <3ReplyCancel

Hi Becca my cyber friend, I hope and pray whatever is going on in your life right now will fall in line as our God wills it to be. I have several events in my life that I have felt the same way and I now can look back and see how God allowed it to happen in order for better to come about. I pray you find peace . Now for the most awe inspiring moment in my life. There have been several, the day I first held my newborn only child, the day I saw the most beautiful rainbow I have ever seen in my life looking like it was coming down directly from Heaven with the most vivid colors you could imagine and the morning I awoke with an entire poem flowing from my mind about finding peace knowing my best friend was in God’s care after she passed away from cancer. It was about 8 stanzas long and I hopped out of bed and started furiously writing just to get it all captured on paper before the morning fog took away the memory. God is so good, I just wish all people would know this and honor Him by excepting Jesus as their savior and only way of salvation. My very best to you my friend, we have never met and I know you don’t know me at all but I have watched you grow for many years, since before John passed and I feel like you are part of my family. May God continue His many blessing for you and your family. Many Hugs, Denice : )ReplyCancel

Love you card, just gorgeous! Glad you finally got to cross off one item on things to see. As an Arizonan we tend to forget how beautiful the Grand Canyon is and what a marvel. I have been there a couple of times and still forget until someone mentions having gone there and how breath taking a site it is. You are right pictures don’t do the canyon justice. I have found that true in a lot of places. My hubby and I recently did a Panama Canal cruise and it was so much better in person than in pictures. Glad you had a great time in AZ and hope you come back again.ReplyCancel

    Becca:
This card is beautiful, as always. My story: I also saw the Grand Canyon in January. My then-to-be husband convinced me that we could walk down the South rim to the Blue Angels campground, and back in the same day. There had been a snow storm, so when we walked to the canyon rim, we could not see the path. A man yelled “heads up” and he steered a team of donkeys who knew the path and passed on through. That was the path we took. We completed the journey in one day – barely. That was the most strenuous event I ever participated in. We both survived, and I later married him.

Beautiful card! Just ordered your new dies from Spellbinders (missed getting them on Create) and can’t wait till they arrive! Most awe inspiring–Grand Canyon, Royal Gorge, ocean with Diamond Head in view, flying over Coral Reef, beautiful sunrise/sunset? Has to be the first time I held my newborn grandson and granddaughter!ReplyCancel

I was awe inspired seeing the Rosetta Stone at the museum in London. I remembered learning about it in grammar school and couldn’t believe that I was seeing it in person. It was so very key in unlocking the history of ancient civilizations.ReplyCancel

An awesome moment for me was at Max Patch on the North Carolina-Tennessee border. On top of this bald, grassy mountain, we had a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. And the quietness of this place was just as amazing as the view! The silence was only broken now and then by birds or the voices of hikers on the Appalachian Trail.ReplyCancel

Lovely card as always. The photo of the Grand Canyon was beautiful! Hubby and I went to Alaska years ago and you see paintings of Alaska but words can not describe the beauty in person. Best vacation I have ever taken!ReplyCancel

A delightful card. Funnily enough my awe inspiring moment was at the Grand Canyon in September 2013. We had climbed up the hill from the train and as we reached the top this wonderful sight came into view and it brought tears to my eyes. It truly took my breath away. Pictures can never do it justice – the real thing is awesome beyond belief. Whatever your changes in life, Becca, I wish you all you could hope for and I hope your new direction will bing you peace and happiness. Good luck.ReplyCancel

Hi Becca, another beautiful card, but then, when don’t you come up with superb creations! My husband and I did a road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas via the canyon a few years ago now during February. We got there just as the sun was setting, it was freezing and we went back very early the following morning and watched the sun rise. An unforgettable experience.

I love this stunning card and the sentiment. I’m still a huge fan of your border die collection and I am enjoying the ideas you share. I’m so glad I purchased the entire collection.

My grandson, Noah, is now 16 but I still remember the joy in my heart when I saw him the first time. His Mom was in labor doing fine until they suddenly lost his heart beat!!! God had things under control and a doctor was nearby to do a truly emergency C-section. The doctor said if he had been 10 minutes away, Noah wouldn’t have made it! As we waited in the waiting room, not knowing if our blessing was going to be alive, my 6’2″ son came out of the OR with tears running down his face. In his arms was this little bundle of pure happiness! I will never forget that day! I became a Grammy for the first time and Noah was perfect! I was there when his sister, Emma, was born without all the anxiety but nonetheless pure joy once again! God is so great!!!

I am praying for you, Becca, that you find peace in every aspect of your life! God bless!ReplyCancel

I too was inspired by the Grand Canyon Becca. Several years ago was my first trip to the canyon and it left me speechless. As I was looking down from an overlook I saw a dot flying around and after asking someone what kind of bird that was and informed it was an eagle. The significance of the grandeur around me hit me like a lead balloon. God granted me the health to visit other places like Yellowstone and Chalco Canyon. What a wonderful time it was to spend with my husband of 48 years and my sister and brother-in-law, now both passed away.Creating memories and enjoying God’s country. Becca I am so glad you could travel and do one thing unexpected. God has so many things around the corner for you when you do. Best trips ever is doing it on the fly.ReplyCancel

Becca, I’m so delighted to read that you braved seeing one of God’s greatest wonders, The Grand Canyon, in winter weather! I’m an Arizona resident and cherish that this national treasure is here. I, too, was awestruck when I visited the Grand Canyon and agree with you that pictures just cannot do it justice. It’s true majesty can only be experienced in person. There are no words!!!ReplyCancel

Dear Sweet Becca…My heart goes out to you. May God hold you in his hands and bring you Peace, Strength & Comfort. A pastor once told me…Life is like a glow stick…sometimes we have to break a little before we can shine. Thank you once again for a stunning card! I have been lucky to see some of God’s beautiful lands…Tahiti, Fiji, Western Samoa, New Zealand and a bit of France and Belgium. The waters of the South Pacific are fabulous. I will always remember looking up while descending into Waitomo cave in New Zealand and seeing the sky through the exotic greenery that rimmed the mouth of the cave. Awe inspiring! Sending love. Hi Becca,
How your cards are always so beautiful! You trully have been blessed with a talent!
What a lovely adventure for you & your sister. So glad you were safe & oh the site you must have witnessed. How beautiful. My awe inspiring moment was at the Grand Canyon nearly 24 yrs ago on my honeymoon, but there was no snow. It is one of the most amazing things made by God. We take so much for granted then you see a beautiful site from nature & it brings us back to Earth.
I have never personally gotten the chance to meet you, but I feel like I know you. You’re cards are like a piece of your heart, pouring with passion. I love seeing your work you have been a huge inspiration.
Crafting is also my outlet. Sending you my friend hugs & prayers from Australia & may God help you to find comfort at this difficult trying time. xoxReplyCancel
