I LOVE buying stuff from the sellers on etsy.com, but don’t sell there, yet. I have a friend who uses it and highly recommends it, so I know you can’t go wrong setting up an etsy account. I’ve been with Etsy for 3 years now. It was fun in the beginning and you will get some faithful customers. But to stay on top of the heap (competing with literally THOUSANDS of other cardmakers) you have to constantly keep posting new product just to stay on the top. I personally found it way too time consuming. So what I’ve done is specialize my product line to a much smaller audience, giving half of everything I sell to charities. My excess cards – I give to our church so everyone can have the joy of receiving a beautiful hand made card. Everyone is happy and most of all – me. :DReplyCancel

Your work is beautiful!! I think you would do fine selling on Etsy because you could have a link to your store on your blog and your blog gets so much traffic because your work is AMAZING but I tried selling there and dont like ventures where you have to put out a bunch of money and pay for listing when you dont sell anything. I think an Etsy shop would be an excellent thing for you to do! I don’t have any experience buying or selling there – but I do like to browse occasionally. I often forget to though – so my tip for you would be that you send out a heads-up when you list new items…or even a weekly reminder of what is there.ReplyCancel

The thing I found about ETSY and cards is that everybody wants a custom one — sentiment, color, etc. — so you’re never really able to sell the cards you’ve made, and you spend more time than it’s worth to create or replicate a card that a shopper wants. ALSO, there are MORE than enough card sellers on ETSY. The heartache, too, about selling handmade things is that you never really get back all you put into them.

I can’t give you any advice about Etsy other than “give it a go.” Your cards are absolutely amazing and there are none out there that I would rather have than a Becca card. I’ve been hoping that someday you would give us a chance to win one, not that I will, I don’t have much luck in that dept. but I sure would love the chance. Secondly, I have never even heard of Etsy! Sorry! Guess now I’ll have to check it out. Honestly, as longs as it’s not more throuble then it’s worth, then what’s the harm? Your cards are certainly worth selling, no problem there.
Now this might ne a dumb question…but couldn’t you maybe sell some of your cards right here on your blog site? I mean couldn’t you give a preview of what you would like to sell, either individually or in sets? Then your followers could kind of “place their order” and then simply ship them out?
As I said, no idea what Etsy is, or how it works, but…..whatever is easier for you, less stress, and still enjoyable.

Your cards would sell quickly on Etsy–they are gorgeous and very unique. You really don’t have anything to lose on Etsy since it’s so inexpensive to use and there are all kinds of tutorials on their on the best way to market and sell your items on Etsy. I must admit that I didn’t know anything about Etsy Crafts, but I just did some research. I looked in the card section, there are some beautiful cards shown and many to choose from. I think offering your cards for sale is a wonderful idea, however, why use a middle man. Offer them on your blog, like many offer their tutorials. You have such a great following on your blog, you wouldn’t have to compete with anyone else, nor pay the middle man fees and worry about advertising, maintaining, or all that stuff. Just use your blog, please. I think that once you release them for sale, they will be snapped up in no time at all. Maybe a sale every quarter or something. From reading the other comments it seems like a lot of people have never used Etsy. I have heard of it but never gone there to look for any cards. I think you would have better luck just selling the cards from your website, then if that doesn’t work out try Etsy. I would love to win the blog candy!ReplyCancel

I would LOVE to be able to purchase some of your lovely works of art. I am not familiar with Etsy. I sell on Ebay and the only problem with that is the fees can be so high that sometimes Ebay makes $$ on my items while I lose money . Then there are those Paypal fees which take away more…and the postage. Customers do not seem to understand that many of us cannot afford to give them FREE shipping. Before I purchased tools to make my own cards, I bought handmade cards from Etsy. I’ve also bought primitive crafts there to decorate around the holidays. I love prim :-) I’ve had great luck using Etsy. I think you should go for it. You have the talent to make exceptionally unique cards that most would never attempt to do themselves. I’m not sure how profitable it is though or what kind of cyber traffic Etsy attracts. I know people that sell directly from their blogs using zen cart. Showing the finished cards and pricing in a thumbnail image right from here would not be a bad idea to consider.You already have a large market base in your followers.

I have no first hand experience with Etsy except that my grand niece sells handmade baby items and can scarcely keep up with her orders. Of course she does her Etsy work after her two babies are put down for the night…having two young ones does make a difference! Good luck should you decide to go that route.ReplyCancel

I love your blog candy. Advice about ESTY. I know what it is and have searched to see items people have recommended, but I have never purchased anything. But I am a crafter and always think I can make it myself cheaper than buying it from someone elses inventory. If you’re overrun with cards and not sure what to do, definitately sell them. You can even do it at your own pace so you don’t feel any extra pressure. You will be wildly successful on Etsy!

Becca, whatever you decide on as to an Etsy shop will be ‘right’ for you. Your creations are so unique & having looked many times at other paper crafts, you will have no serious competion. Your style is so different from the others.
I love Etsy. I have ordered items as is from them & had custom orders done too. I love that I can request speciality items that I can’t create but someone more talented can. I think my favorite order was custom family stones with each name & a personalization on the reverse. I had ordered them as a memorial stone for when each family member passed. We used the first one for my Mom. Dad was so touched at how lovely it looked for her. The artists that made them were so helpful and caring. They even put them in lovely boxes with a nice presentation setting.
If you decide to do the shop, I know I will be haunting looking for that ‘special’ card that I just can’t create for the situation.

I’m trying to sell on ETSY, my shop is: Paper Gems Studio. I’m trying to sell my beaded lanyards. I have not sold anything yet, mostly because I don’t think anyone knows I’m there! I do OK selling on eBay, but the listing/selling fees REALLY add up. I think YOU will do well on ETSY because you already have quite the following HERE, and I know I WILL hop on over to ETSY to see and buy a card here and there if I had the opportunity! ETSY is cheaper to sell, both eBay and ETSY listing is easy once you get the hang of it. Keep us posted! … and you can try BOTH! Denise :)ReplyCancel

I tried Etsy when they first established the store and back then it was pretty much free but it still wasn’t very well known. There are things I don’t like about it, and maybe it’s just me, but I find it a bit difficult to navigate around to different sellers and once an item is sold it’s gone (so if you do have say two of something the same) you would have to relist the second item before it can sell. For people that make several of the same item, it becomes a bit cumbersome.ReplyCancel

Etsy is fabulous and I’m sure you will do very well. My advice is that you should list a few things at a time at different times in the day so that you can gain the most exposure and views. Spread out your listings instead of just posting everything in one afternoon.ReplyCancel

Wowzer candy , I would love to own some primas. My suggestion for the Esy Store is..First deside what your goal is…to clear space?….recoup your cost(you never recoup you time with crafts)? get more money to make more stuff? Then check what the market will bear selling price wise. Too many times people sell too high, stock get old/outdated…and you end up sustaining loss instead of gain. Well, that’s my opinion anyways. Becca besides the Etsy Rules you will need to look at the companies whose stamps you want to use. Are they Angel companies will they allow you to sell your products using their stamps or are there limited times you may hand stamp your cards and do they restrict your use for profit? What must you do to give credit to the product you use on your card. Check that out too. I love your cards and love the talent you share. I, for one would love if you burned cd’s for sale of your Becca Bits and that, to me, would be awesome and well worth it. My computer is not in my craft area but I have a cd player I can take with me and your Becca Bits would be a wonderful purchase to have because I always have to review how to tie bows or if I want to review how to use the punches just so…. Your voice is calm and soothing and you are a wonderful teacher and a CD of your teachings taking the time you desire to show us would be well worth it and perhaps profitable too? It could perhaps be a wonderful testimony of who you are and your faith and well pray on it Becca? If you ever make a CD please, please let me know and I will sign up for one ! If you ever do you could even do a pre-order and know how many you would have to burn and figure a price to make it worth-while?

Becca, why pay all those Etsy fees? You have a HUGE following on your blog already and we all love your style! Just make a For Sale page and put the PayPal buttons on. You will have to pay the PayPal fee for the transaction, but you would have to do that anyway with Etsy.

It will save you a lot of money over time, and most of us will snap these cards up, not necessarily to send but as piece of inspiration and example for our own creations!

I think it will be a huge success, and you could ask a good bit as your cards are fairly complex. Go for it!ReplyCancel

It has been so long since I sold anything. But, you take cost of materials, how much time you put into it and then times that times 5. Used to be by 3 but everything has gone up in price. I know last time I sold a card I got 5.00 each for them. Also depends on the area and of course the economy. Here it is not so good right now so you wouldn’t get a lot for them. Your cards are so pretty and I am sure they would sell real well. Take a look around Etsy and see what cards are going for to get an idea. Hope that helps.

Here’s some advice I found elsewhere:
1. Go for something unique, something that stands out and looks good on photos.
2. Watch your costs, including your time costs, fees, postage etc.
3. ‘Commotize’ your crafts, i.e. concentrate on a few lines and get really good and quick at doing them. This will net you much more than a bit of this, bit of that approach.
4. Set up your own website (this can be done very easily and cheaply, even for free) and promote this everywhere you can.
5. Sell on Etsy, Folksy and set up a Facebook shop.
6. Don’t sell too cheaply, you are not competing on price, but on the quality and uniqueness of your handmade products. Many people sell their wares too cheaply, which paradoxically can be offputting to people buying handmade products, some people think cheap = poor quality craftsmanship.

Living “Across the Pond” I had never heard of an Etsy Shop. So I Googled it. What can I say? I was flabbergasted. I want one over hear. Lots of my chum sell their Handmade cards, Digi Stamps and Clear Sentiment Stamps either on their own little online shops or Ebay. This is such a fab idea.
I know it takes some time to set up your own Online shop, but it may be worth a shot.

Yummy. The paper alone is worth it all. Absolutely love all the vibrant colors. I have never bought anything off etsy, but am sure you would do wonderfully. Your talent is so elegant and beautiful. I read some comments and agree that you could probably do very well using your web site. I also really liked the idea of a CD. I would also like to see a pdf file with some of your Becca Bits/techniques when possible, especially when there are measurements. I would think setting up Etsy it would be alot of work to keep up with, plus it’s just 1 more thing to have on your plate.
Why not, when posting one of your beautiful cards, just put a price on it right away and who ever wants to buy it can do so right here on your blog and pay by Pay Pal.

I love Etsy’s and have toyed with the idea too. But You would do wonderful right on your own site, and there would be no fees to sell, and not something else to maintain, it could be just another tab on your present site. You have such a huge following, that’s where you should start first and you can always go to Etsy’s. For me and my SMALL following to get my name out there I would use Etsy’s… but like I said You with your HUGE following would not need them so much.

I love looking at all the wonderful items on etsy. My girlfriend actually sells stuff on there and the one thing she found to be helpful is purchasing a scale so she is not running to the post office all the time. Her mailman picks up packages at her door so she has totally eliminated the trip. The key is to get your product seen.
Someone posted a suggestion about making a dvd! I’m game for that! I am always running back to review becca bows and half the time my computer decides to buffer like crazy so I’m stuck trying to remember how it was done!

I’ve have only been over to Etsy a handful of times – the quality of stuff on there covers a broad continuum, but I must add, that one shouldn’t under-estimate the amount of time one has spent creating handcrafted items.

Yours should be at the top end of that spectrum – my advice is to make sure you charge what your creations are worth – I don’t think you would be short of people wanting to purchase them anyhow. Just make sure you ship overseas to the UK!!!

Becca – wow another blog candy – how generous of you. I don’t know anything about Etsy. Have you tried to sell your cards at schools/craft shows? I’m not very familiar with how to sell other than to friends. If you teach classes it wouldl be awesome to attend one sometime. There’s a great stamping convention in Cinti, OH called Stampaway – they have instructors come in and teach classes on thurs/fri and the actual vendor convention is on Sat. The classes are set for this year but if you would want to submit something for next year, let me know and I’ll send you more information – YOUR CLASSES WOULD BE A SELL OUT – normally between 30-45 depending on the room size you are assigned to. You can even teach mutlipe classes if your projects are accepted.ReplyCancel

The one you should ask is Jesus. Let Him guide you Becca. I know nothing about running ETSY and I rarely buy anything there but that does not mean you won’t be successful. Your cards are lovely and there are lots of people out there that don’t make cards so if the Lord says “go” then you are sure to be on the right track.

As for Etsy, I don’t have any personal experience. I have been looking into it as well. The only thing I can say is from my research. I saw one gal with beautiful cards. She had been on Etsy for 3 years and had only 8 sales.

However, your cards are well renowned. You might be supprised with a huge volume of sales and then need an assistant to help keep up with mailing them out to purchasers. lol!

You should definitely go for it. If you intend to hand address anything, I recommend you take a photo of the envelope to prove you wrote it out correctly. This became an issue with a recent sale if mine. You should also make sure your policies are written somewhere. The same person expected me to replace a lost card for free when I have a policy that states I am not responsible for lost items and that insurance is available at buyers cost. She didn’t like that and gave me a hard time anyway.

Another thought – SU consultants offer email tutorials for a fee. I’d LOVE to have your tutorials available with step-by-step photos and directions. I watch your video and then go down to my craft room and realize I didn’t really get it all in my head correctly. I’d be happy to pay for these. An Etsy Store allows payment choices (cc or PayPal) that charge you for the use but protects you also, but it sure is nice for us to have the chance to buy your lovely creations! Can’t say I’d ever be able to give anything up though. :) This “pink” card is out of this world….pink has always been my favorite color. I saw a great idea for organizing lever punches so that you can see what they are… don’t remember where I saw it… BUT I was in our local Sam’s store and found just what I needed to organize mine in this manner… it was a four or five-shelf wire shelving thing found in the kitchen appliances aisle!
The thing that is sooo cool… you stand your lever punches with the lever side down over one of the rods of the shelves… with the image of the punch shape facing forward… put the smaller ones on the front-most rods of the shelf and larger ones towards the rear… you can easily see all of your punches in a glance! How cool is that?! The best part? This heavy duty shelving unit was about $40 at Sam’s and it will hold something like 200 lbs per shelf!
I’ve seen a lot of similar ideas using single rods from IKEA but they require that you have wall space to mount them… this shelving unit gives you a lot more bang for your buck and storage for your wall space… only about a foot deep… hope this inspires some of you to organize your punches so you can see them more easily… thus promoting more frequent use… ; )

Why don’t you just put a “Buy it” button on your blog and set things up so you can send an invoice from PayPal and have folks just pay through there.
You can do your shipping label and pay for postage right from PayPal. It’s super easy to do. Be sure to get a little scale to weigh your items and be sure to weigh them with the packing material. You may also get flat-rate envelopes and boxes from the Post Office.

People will buy from you no matter where you set up shop. I say avoid the fees and try to set it up from here.

I did go on-line to look at the Etsy store. It is very interesting. I think you will have no problem selling things as your projects are fabulous! I would say the main thing is to remain true to yourself. Only put the things on the site you feel comfortable with. Some time back I saw cards on e-bay that, tho very pretty, were in my opinion waaay overdone, but the public disagreed with me and were paying $10 and $12 for them. It seems that people who frequent e-bay will buy anything! I don’t know how much hassle it is to deal with e-bay.

Sure you should go for it hun. I´ve never heard anything but good about this place. and as sooo many is already using it, it can´t be too bad, I think.
But ofcause you´ll have to check out first, if there´s any certain rules, you need to be careful about, and definately make sure, that the stamps you´ve used on the cards, isn´t copyrighted, so you can´t sell them in public, as it would be horrible, if you were sued to brake any copyright laws, but if you make sure all this is okay, then I can only see good things about this, so go for it hun, and I´m sure, you´ll be sold out in no time there, when people see your wonderful creations.

If you don’t have your heart set on setting up an Etsy store, you may want to consider selling directly from your website (as you already have such a large group of followers). This way you wouldn’t have to create a new site, and eliminate the cost that would entail. But, whatever your decision, I know it will be successful.ReplyCancel

I sometimes have a hard time pushing myself to start something new because I overthink exactly what my involvement will be, and if I will be able to keep up with one more set of administrative details. So – while I’ve been an avid eBay shopper for ten years, I have never taken the plunge to actually list anything to sell. My “cold feet” on etsy would be similar.

Would the details of managing sales (posting items, shipping, etc) rob me of time enough to continue to make the items to sell? Don’t know the answer. And would the financial benefits of any sales be worth the effort expended? Don’t know that answer either! Just food for thought for you.
You may already have enough on your plate. And we don’t want you robbing yourself of creative and organizational time! (As a fellow compulsive organizer – thought not the PhD that you are! – I know I have to make sure I have ample time to indulge in my putzing around my workroom.)

Don’t get me wrong however. I would welcome the opportunity to purchase one of your creations, and would pay pretty dearly for the privilege. But could you price your items realistically (time & materials) and also have successful sales? Everytime someone asks me if I’ll make something for them to purchase I tell them that I don’t work for 1 cent an hour… its a little too far below minimum wage! Love the blog candy.
