New Poll: How You Choose to Learn

Hi there blog friends, just a note to let you know that a new poll is up. All the time you hear people say that they are a book learner or a visual learner. Crafting is such a visual craft and with the advent of Youtube, you now have most crafts at your finger tips. Recently a friend showed me a little piece of tatting she used on a card and I was smitten. I’ve now gone back through my books and have picked out all my tatting supplies. Lucky for me, now there are quite a few Youtubes!!   I think I’m actually more of a book learner, but I’m curious to find out what you are!!

My poll is in the right hand side bar, weigh in if you can, it only takes a second. Remember I run each poll all week and you can see the results of earlier polls on my Crafting Poll Archive Page.

I’ll be back in the morning with a card and hope you see you then. Looking forward to a fabulous week!

Beautiful card! I immediately thought about making it into a pocket card….maybe for a gift card or special note.
    Thanks, Becca!

I learn from all 3: by video as I can rerun the instructions but I also like to learn from the teacher where I can ask questions and I like written instructions that I can refer back to & file away for future reference. So Becca this is a difficult one to answer. Have a great day & look forward
to see your latest card xxReplyCancel

BECCA BECCA I LEARN ANY WAY I CAN . LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN

MANLY WAYS TO LEARN. SO WHAT EVER I CAN FIND, I USE.

I seem to get most of my crafting information from watching tutorial videos on YouTube. But, at the same time, I’ve also found that I have become a bit lazy with my learning habits, as most times I don’t seem to retain the information. I take advantage of the fact that I can always go back and refer to the videos, instead of taking a moment to try and soak in what I’ve just watched. For example, I can’t tell you how many times I have watched a video on the Bow Easy, yet I always need to refer to it every time I pick it up to use it….lol Also, another example, there are numerous videos posted on YouTube for inking techniques. I have many of them bookmarked in FireFox and also have just as many more saved to my YT channel. And, despite watching nearly everyone of these videos at least 3 or 4 times, there are some days I sit down to do a project and can’t even remember what it is I want to do or how to do it. Back to the computer and less time crafting :PReplyCancel

It’s really hard for me to learn from video tutorials, cause i’m a very impatient person and all those introductions and slow comments drive me crazy.
I prefer the photos with short descriptions, they let me read about all the thing really fast.ReplyCancel

  • ColleenB.May 16, 2011 - 2:49 am

Best way for me is the step by step instructions, as sometimes I can’t always watch the videos. :{ With the written instructions, I can print them out and take back to my work area (opposite end of house) and have instruction sheet right there with me as I do a project whether it’s making cards or whatever.

I love the you-tube videos, but I wish they had a fast forward. The pause is great so you can try something, but if I am can do a bit I would like to skip forward. I like the classes as it keeps me in contact with like minded people, but I often have learned more on the internet than my classmates and so are not as useful but are certainly as enjoyable. Keep up the good work!
    Thanks :)

Use every method listed but voted for step by step written as I have books and magazines in my craft room….and it is easy to “do over” when you find that you zigged when you should have zagged. Thanks for the poll.ReplyCancel

I’m a visual learner…I actually like to see the item being done as it always gives me a clearer idea. Another great poll Becca!

  • lois skiathitisMay 16, 2011 - 4:55 am

I’m one of the visual learners, so that is what I have chosen. I could have chosen by written word because I’m writing down what I have watched on video. As always Becca, TFS!!! :-DReplyCancel

  • CherylMay 16, 2011 - 5:00 am

Very interesting question, Becca. I also have done all three. I took a few lessons. Haunted the library for books. Bought books on ebay. When Youtube started posting “lessons” and you started posting tutorials, I had it made!! There is not a craft I have not tried, except maybe lace making and tatting. My great grandmother excelled at both, but left me no books. I love the fact that anyone can now learn anything with online videos! What a world of knowledge is at our fingertips. I work at Michaels and friends often come to me and ask for help. I often refer them to your website or other ones on the net. Many of them are senior citizens and express their dislike of computers. What a world of “learning” they are missing!
Thank you for all your tutorials, Becca. I have studied every one!! Hugs.ReplyCancel

  • Barbara JayMay 16, 2011 - 5:25 am

I learn best from a video, but then I need notes to refresh my memory the next time I try a technique. I take notes if there is no written tutorial .
If I just have a written tutorial it takes me forever to get a new technique masteredReplyCancel

  • DebbieMay 16, 2011 - 5:31 am

I am definitely a monkey-see monkey-do visual learner, so I selected videos. But a very close second for me would be step by step written directions as long as those directions include pictures and/or diagrams.

Love your blog, and thanks for asking.ReplyCancel

  • bonnie weissMay 16, 2011 - 5:50 am

Love video tutorials. Before we moved, we could not get high-speed internet and I was literally reduced to tears, at times, when I could not watch all of the crafting videos that were being posted. Now I find that I am spending TOO much time online watching videos tutorials and blog surfing!

Video tutorials, like your Becca, are a main stay for my inspiration and I am SOOO grateful that you take the time to produce and post them.ReplyCancel

  • LynetteMay 16, 2011 - 6:08 am

Although I voted for step by step instructions, for things like your bows I go back to the videos. I have a lot of crafting books that I have learned to paint from (I’m a one stroke artist first and cardmaker second), but I originally learned by watching Donna Dewberry on the Shopping Channel, so I guess I’m a visual learner!ReplyCancel

  • JoJoMay 16, 2011 - 6:15 am

I voted for the written instructions (with pictures/diagrams). As a store owner and teacher that’s the way I had to learn the new techniques so I could teach the classes. Since retiring I’m thankful for the tutorials on YouTube, but they are so small, the whole thing doesn’t always show well. I appreciate you, Becca, and look forward to your blog every day.
    Have a blessed day!ReplyCancel

  • DonnaMay 16, 2011 - 6:35 am

While I do love videos and written instructions, I think you missed a big one with not adding a combination of methods. I love to watch videos to learn new techniques but I tend to only watch them once and then use written instructions, either my own from the video or someone else’s, to help me remember. So I went for the not listed method! Have a wonderful week!ReplyCancel

  • Jennifer in IAMay 16, 2011 - 7:03 am

I too am a visual learner but a close second for me would be in a classroom setting where I could tangibly see and feel the project we were making. I feel like YouTube videos sometimes don’t focus in on the detail of the project I’m most interested in. But I’m also like others who spend a lot of time blog surfing and learning, that I lose track of time and wonder where my day went.ReplyCancel

  • MarionMay 16, 2011 - 7:07 am

I really think that whether it is a video, written directions or a class the true determining factor is the instructor. Some are able to be very precise and get the concepts across in a way you understand. Others know how to do it but just don’t connect the dots for me. Pat yourself on the back. You do a superior job as an instructor.ReplyCancel

  • margotMay 16, 2011 - 7:11 am

I learn best by written instruction. I get impatient with the videos. There is either too much commentary (so that I get bored waiting for the next step) or I’m backing the video up a million times to see how exactly that step happened. With both there are those times when I just can’t see what it is that is being done – a poor photo (which I would think would be easier to replace) or poorly shot video (bad camera angle for that shot or the step obscured by hands. Harder and more time-consuming to correct).
That being said – if I really don’t get a technique a video that is concise and to the point is always welcome. :)ReplyCancel

  • MaryannMay 16, 2011 - 7:14 am

I must agree, I also loves to start out with the video, and then go on with step by step instructions, when I´m actually doing the work, cause then when I see it, I remember it from the video and can follow all the tsmall details tto perfectionisme, which suits me best. So I also went for the not mentioned option here this timeReplyCancel

  • Connie GoodMay 16, 2011 - 7:18 am

I really learn both ways but like to have a book around to look at the pictures and read the directions. Sometimes its easier that turning the computer on and watching a demo. But everyone learns in a different way.ReplyCancel

  • Karen McNeelyMay 16, 2011 - 7:28 am

I like to see the video first and then move to the step by step directions. It seems like once I see it done on the video, I use the step by step directions for the measurements etc.ReplyCancel

  • Lisa N - MNMay 16, 2011 - 7:32 am

Definitely a visual learner. I need to see something before it sinks in. Thanks Becca!ReplyCancel

  • Rachel BrooksMay 16, 2011 - 7:35 am

Step by step is my best method, but I also like to see the step-by-step illustrations to go with them. The videos are nice, but you have to keep going back to recheck what you THOUGHT you knew how to do.ReplyCancel

  • lacyquilterMay 16, 2011 - 8:02 am

Although I checked written instructions (assuming they are well written), I prefer pictures along with the instructions. But I do like that it’s easier to check back on a difficult step with written instructions than to find the spot in a video. I think having a video or teacher PLUS the steps on paper is really the best. But I usually have no problem learning from any of the ways listed.ReplyCancel

  • Carol RMay 16, 2011 - 8:14 am

I’m actually a visual learner AND step by step learner. Hands on is always the best way but most of the time if a person posts detail photos with very clear instructions, I can usually pick the technique up quickly. Plus it is easier to pull out the printed paper instructions to look at while doing the project.ReplyCancel

  • Evette K. CiampoMay 16, 2011 - 8:41 am

Becca, I have always needed to see how it is done, try it myself and have someone there to help me if I do not have it correct. That is why I use to go to every technique class that my upline use to have. We made cards that showed how the technique turned out plus the directions on how to do it and had our upline a phone call away or email away. That worked for me. Then our stamp club would sometimes try the technique as well. We use to meet once per month. Now my best friend and I go to her home twice per week and do stamping or scrapbooking. Sometimes we have three other girls with us, sometimes just us. But we continue to learn from each other plus checking your blog and others to learn. Thanks for the polls…really love them. And of course your fabulous creations. There is nothing like a Becca card to start my week off smiling, thanks!!!!ReplyCancel

    Becca
I am like you. I love book learning, but I have fallen in love with YouTube! And of course, your videos are among my favs! I send people to your videos all the time. What I like about YouTube is sometimes there are things I have never heard of, and yet I run across it on YouTube and learn something new. Love It!ReplyCancel

  • Wanda ThomasMay 16, 2011 - 9:32 am

It’s tough to stuff one of those videos into your file of “techniques I want to try some day” whose home is in my craft room. Plus – not all videos give you a written list of measurements/tool. So you have to take notes on that. If you show the list on the video, I can do a “print screen” and that helps a bunch. Thanks for asking!ReplyCancel

  • Yvonne WeberMay 16, 2011 - 9:45 am

I like classroom and step by step with pictures. Too many times the videos go thru and I can’t remember the steps. (Old age creeping in faster all the time). Guess I am a visual learner. YvonneReplyCancel

  • Francie (Montreal)May 16, 2011 - 10:11 am

My learning style morphed as my confidence developed in card-making. As a novice, I needed the classroom setting and a huge thanks to Bonnie of Bonnidee Stamps in Pointe-Claire, Quebec for getting me started. You changed my life.

As my confidence grew (much faster than my ability, I must say), I began to troll the Internet and found lots of videos that suited my needs. And that’s where I am right now. And another huge thanks to you, Becca for helping me develop further.ReplyCancel

  • Mary L.May 16, 2011 - 10:12 am

I really like all three. As I am quite an ancient person, I have had to use written instructions most of my life, but have had some lovely “teachers” who have gotten me started. Now with the videos it is even easier.
I pretty much thought myself to knit, & tat,& crochet. & do counted cross stitch & needle point. I’m still working on the painting thing. Thank goodness for rubber stamps. lol.
    Your work inspires me. Thanks.

  • carol biskerMay 16, 2011 - 10:38 am

Although I can follow directions that are written out and have pictures to go with them, but I prefer seeing someone do the technique and ask questions if I have them. I was a Home Ec teacher for 25 years, so I have some innate ability but I prefer to see the steps for something as I am a visual learner. I will also take notes while I am watching so that I can go back and refresh my memory. I learned this while I was in college and have used this during my adult life. I LOVE your cards and your ideas. You have inspired me to step outside my comfort zone to be more creative!!! thank you!!

I am most definitely a visual learner. I don’t necessarily need a video, step by step photos will do. I can follow written instructions but it takes me longer to grasp the concept. I’ve never done well in a classroom, never think of questions to ask until the teacher is long gone.
    Have a Blessed week.

You didn’t list what my best way to learn is, so I thought I’d tell you here. I learn best when I can do what the teacher is teaching. Hands-on is the best way for me along with instructions.

Becca, what do you do with these polls?ReplyCancel

  • ColoradoMay 16, 2011 - 12:06 pm

Even though I’m visually impaired, I still prefer video tutorials… BUT only if the person doing the video gives a good audio explanation of what they are doing. I am a former teacher and only left the classroom because of my visual impairment and I have to say that some of the people who do video tutorials are not good at explaining what they are doing and how they do it! LOL!! That being said, I’d rather have a good written tutorial with pictures than a bad video.ReplyCancel

  • CarolynMay 16, 2011 - 12:20 pm

I like to have the book to follow the directions with pictures of course. Being a lefty it gets more difficult sometimes and a video is a must when possible to see how someone else is doing it and reaffirming that I’m doing it right. But it would be better if they were left handed. lolReplyCancel

  • RufusMay 16, 2011 - 12:36 pm

I try not to ever click you didn’t list mine. But this time I just had to! Take your example, tatting. My Grandma was a great tatter, wish I’d had her teach me, but that didn’t happen. I’ve tried to learn it from books and that’s just not working. All my knots don’t slide they knot! So I need a teacher for that. Some things I need teachers to interact with, some a video is fine, others a book works best. I guess I’m just an omnivore! I want ’em all!!

  • Becky DunhamMay 16, 2011 - 12:50 pm

I picked video/visual learner on the poll because i like to be able to see the process, but then i actually have to do it in order for me to learn it! So basically what i do is watch a video and write my own instructions in language i understand. Type it up on index cards and have those in a file. Then when i want to try something, I hang it up on my magnetic cupboard above my craft space and go to work. Often if it is has been a while since I watched the video, i still need to watch it again for a refresher so i also put the name of the video, author, etc on the card to refer to.ReplyCancel

  • Linda ClarkMay 16, 2011 - 2:37 pm

    Hello Becca,
I am a written/read learner first, then I go to videos and tutorials. I like the written version as I have slow, slow internet at home so I cannot watch videos there. I have the dreaded dial up!!! High speed not available yet in my area. I always print out all instructions so I can use them later at home. I do watch videos when I have the opportunity. I learn new things but often times I forget them by the time I go home and get the time to work on the project. I almost always print out a picture of the project so it helps me to remember what I am supposed to be using, etc.
Thanks for sharing with all us learners. Hugs, LindaReplyCancel

  • SharonMay 16, 2011 - 5:05 pm

I seem to always be in the minority for your polls. I learn well with written instructions because I can go back over and over them without seeing the whole vidio, if I do not understand something then a vidio is nice to have too.ReplyCancel

I have used all three methods. I am a visual learner therefore, video or classroom would be my choices. Even though I may write down some instructions so I can remember how to do it next time. I think the classroom is exciting especially if the person teaching the class is excited and knowledgeable. When my local stamping store has national designers and teachers I always try to participate. There is always something to learn!ReplyCancel
